I am currently running an FR campaign and one of my players has a REALLY big problem. He hates how FR is so big. They are adventuroing in the Sespech/Chondath region and their goal is to by a ship, set up multiple homes around the Sea of Fallen Stars (the big sea above the Vilhon Reach, right?) linked by portals, and they plan to be mercenary/privateers taking out the pirates iin that area.

Is there anyway, that I could limit this down alittle so that they on't have to be sailing for 3 or 4 days everytime they decided to set sail? 'cause I'm pretty sure that they haven't realized just how big the Sea of Fallen Stars is. Plus I'm new too FR, so please go easy.

My Players:
Human Warmage 3 from Thay
Human Barbarian 2 from ..... Ireally don't know where...

Actually i don't understand where's the problem.....you just say "after 3 days you arrive" and that's it.....
If they complain because they want to take 20 ships in 2 months....nope....i thing that after each adventure my player should relax for a week...it's hard to beleava that someone makes 3 levels in 3 weeks...

I see your guys points, but my player won't. I tell him "This adventure only takes place here, and heres the magnifing glass you need to see how small a place you guys are in." But he still complains from time to time. I was jsut asking if there is anything that I should say to him more than what I already have said.

Note: The Warmage is the problem player here and he is only lvl 2, not three. Sorry, my bad. They gained their experiance fighting goblin tribes in The Great Rift.

This is probaly just and overreaction, but I'm new to FR, so I'm probaly freaking out over nothing. Thanks though

How about having them take on fleets, or piret islands, instead of indivitual ships, of course there to low a level to do any of those tihng syet but remind them of that.

I agree with Gothic Dan. I have often asked why are some places so small! I do not understand the root of your players protest. Are they upset because of the provisions they have to buy, or because they are aging too quickly, or what? I don't get where the size of the world is a hinderance to their enjoyment of the game.

Everything is in reach, and you can cross Faerun (on foot no less) pretty quickly all things considered. Perhaps there complaint is indicative of some other base problem? Are they more familiar with another campaign world and simply resent playing in the Realms? I am at a loss without more information.

Actually, since 3rd Edition FR was released and the hacked out a piece of the map, I'd say Faerun was too small. :ahem:

Eh? There is a piece of Faerun that is lost? Or Do you miss the old Kara-tur, Maztica etc? Please clarify.

What he means is that WOTC cut apart the world map when they decided to do the FRCS and many parts of the world have been tossed aside. Elkazar for instance, a quarter to half that nation just up and disappeared. They also shifted the map to the northwest. So some places switched rivers, mountains, etc.

My complaints are about the non-sense of Faerunian geology.....are there any tectonic maps?

There are none published, no. However, Ed has that all detailed and it's just never been printed, like a lot of things. :(

Alot of things many of us Realms-heads would love to sneak a peak at. :weep: But cannot.

Faerūn is geographically big because it was conceived that way, to accommodate all its people and history and diversity and magic. Your player's plan is extremely ambitious -- on a far wider (more modern) scale than most Realms folk would contemplate -- even without the gates, whose making is lost, legendary knowledge. Cormyr and Sembia themselves, nations with millions of people, aren't able to subdue the pirates of the Inner Sea. If his problem is that the land's size makes this difficult, it should be.

Erlkazar didn't disappear.

Erlkazar didn't disappear.
You're right, it did not disappear... it shrunk, or as Kuje points out, about half of it disappeared (by comparison to 2nd Edition FR maps).

And yes, King-bargh, I do miss official representation of Kara-tur, Maztica, and Al-Qadim... but the chopped up, taped back together Faerunian map is what I was referring to when I was lamenting that the Realms are now too small.

I mean, those other lands still exist (and have been mentioned in the FRCS), but not being represented in map form isn't the same thing as reducing the size of the map.

Yup yup. :( That's one of the things I'd love to see detailed and my list has quite a bit of other things on it but, oh well. :(

Seriously, your player sounds like a whiner. It seems to me he wants to impose his wishes on the game world. It's not the DM's job to please the players. It's all about having fun yes, but there's no mirth in throwing treasure and fortune on the players.

I have to agree with most of the responses to this post, complaining that Faerūn is to big is like saying there are to many cookies in the jar. :D I mean how can there be to many cookies?

Faerūn is perfect because it is fleshed out enough to provide an easy jump in for almost any player and DM. It also has enough places that are just vauge enough for any DM to put his or her touch on the world.

I have played in most of the other TSR settings in the past, along with a ton of homebrewed including a few of my own, and nothing even comes close to the Realms in my opinion.

Erlkazar didn't disappear. From Steven Schend... on FR geography and Erlkazar -

"There's no reason why Erlkazar can't continue to exist as mapped in 2E within what they've produced in 3E. After all, the only real change to that area seems to be that they've made the entire area hilly, which it was in description anyways. If anyone's seen photos of the Scottish highlands, that's what I was going for in eastern Tethyr and Erlkazar. I think the only real change that might need to happen is to shrink farms and make them more hillside strip farms more than open fields (ala how they farmed in Peruvian highlands at Maichu Picchu et al).

Remember--the world doesn't change as much as the rules or how the gamers look at the world through those rules. After all, Elminster's been the same roguish gent he's always been, but how the rules allowed him to be seen have changed 4 times now...and he's still Elminster. Same goes for geography (sparing changes like Shade or Tilverton...)

Steven
who hopes you continue to get use out of Tethyr & environs even if WotC isn't...."

I really am baffled by any complaints re: FRCS etc. The amount of detail given in the source materials is incredible. Any details one finds lacking are easily homebrewed. Is it a fear of desecrating canon? That's what the game is all about. Once you roll those dice in the setting, you are making the setting your own anyway! If Faerun is too big for a gaming group, blow half of it up! Add an NPC patron who has access to teleportation spells.

Roll the dice and roll with the consequences.

First of all I would agree that Faerun has a lot of different cultures, much more than Earth per square mile. But this is the thing that makes it so great, you have a vast number of opportunities to experience different lifestyles.

Second, more important thing is that you have made a typical mistake for a DM.
To give a whole map of Faerun to PC is very stupid, such things came to possession to only a few, like Elminster or Volo or some other great sage. That map is only for a DM. My PC's often don't have a chace to travel to another country for years. It's much better when they don't know whats out there. Make them to discover for themselves. You shoud allways start with local things, keep realistic things in mind. Also you should consider your PC's level of greed which can raise to unbearable heights. After they achieve some important role in the society (depends of a situation) they should came across a map of their country and maybe a few near lands. Also it takes a lot of time and work to have a teleport spell or to find some portal as they are so rare. Do you think that Steel Princess of Cormyr has a map of Halruaa, Lantan or Raurin - maybe but also very unlikely, so why your peasant PC's should have it ?

Wow, this has got to be the first time I've heard this complaint. Sounds like your player is just being negative and would find something else to complain about if you resolved this issue by "shrinking" the world.
