Why no Modules?!? [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-06-05, 10:20 PM So I've got a couple of Forgotten Realms source books but I can only find one module, and that's for like 10th level!? I've heard before that modules just don't sell as well as sourcebooks. Anyone have any info on some coming out anytime soon?

WOTC has said they are coming out with new FR modules that are not in Dungeon later this year, hopefully.

Also there is the Pool of Radiance:Attack on Myth Drannor module and the tie in module for Azoun's death that are 3e......

Pool of Radiance: Attack on Myth Drannor (This a tie in to the PC game)

Into the Dragons Lair (This is a tie into Cormyr novels series)

City of the Spider queen (ties into the WOSQ series of novels)

In addition to this there are a number of 3ed FR modules in various Dungeon magazine

Issue 87: Raiders of Galaths roost (A low level module set in the dalelands)

Issue 100: Woe to Mistledale (A sequel to Raiders of Galaths roost)

Issue 88: Doorway from everywhere (A module set in the stonelands neear the ruins of Tilverton)

Issue 103: Forest of Blood (A Module set in the Silver Marches/The North)

Issue 101: Prison of the Flamebringer (A High level module set in the the silver Marches)

Issue 113: Practical magic (a module for 9th level PC set in Marsember in Cormyr)

Issue 92: Spiral of the Manzessine (This module ties into City of the Spider queen and can be run as part of that module)

Issue 90: Tears for Twilight Hollow (This module is set in the Sunset mountains west of Cormyr

Issue 88: Thirds of Purloined Vellum (this is a low level module set in Amn)

There has been some what of an FR drought in Dungeon magazine in the last 6 months or so but according to Eric Mona over at Pazio that we will be seeing more FR stuff including stuff by Skip Williams and Eric Boyd

Well, what you say is true that they don't sell as well as sourcebooks so retailers usually do not carry them. However, my theory is that most DMs craft their own adventures. Well, at least mine does.

01-09-05, 03:30 PM A module is very easy to trun out. That's why lots of the D20 folks put tons of them out. You should have no problem finding stacks and stacks of them at any Game Shop. If not, you can always order them online.

Sure you have to change the names and all, but that only takes three seconds.

While that is certainly true, WotC made some horrendous errors with the three modules that they published for FR3E.

Both Pool of Radiance and Into the Dragon's Lair were not of the highest quality. In both cases, Sean K Reynolds came in to do a repair job but didn't really have the time to make the best of it. He has been quoted on this a number of times.

CotSQ was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Here you have a mega-module that revolves round the most popular evil humanoid race... and it is tied into a plot that:

1. is 100% specific to FR and difficult to port over into any other campaign world; and
2. is still unresolved three years after the module was published while we await the sixth (can't mention the word ;)) in the series. NB: We're not allowed to talk about novels so I'm not.

In other words, you have this product that has limited potential for use in other worlds so it will generally only be used by FR DMs.

Perhaps a third point should be made that it really was interminably long and, in many ways, poorly constructed. The lack of a "home base" was probably the biggest oversight: a similar module set in the North with access to Mantol-Derith would probably have been a better design decision. This would also have allowed it to be tied into the Silver Marches accessory released around the same time and that may have boosted sales for both products.

Anyway, suffice to say that modules don't sell well but WotC really did the best job it could to ensure that the FR modules would not break this rule.

Not true :D Of course you can talk about novels as a source of information about people, places and events in the Realms. The reason the rules are complex is because there isn't a blanket ban - we fought like hell to avoid one. You just can't talk about them as works of literature. I strongly recommend you actually read the rules Novels - Important Info - Read This! (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=185204) After all if the rules could have been put into one sentance don't you think we would :P

Thanks, WizO_BigSister, but I've read the rules a few times and made similar comments in another thread on a similar topic (after all, the publication of CotSQ had more in common with TSR's way of doing business [ie: badly] than it did with WotC's way [ie: well]) and was chipped by one of the WizOs for even mentioning novels. Actually, I think it was your goodself and I pointed out that my comment was in compliance with the policy.... ;)

Anyway, better to err on the side of caution!
