The Simbul 01-24-05, 01:52 AM	Because Secrets of the Magister was one of the last 2nd edition sourcebooks to be published, and because they didnt want to give away free copies of propfitable sourcebooks. The Villains lorebook is free, but the Heroes Lorebook is not, maybe its my own opinion/bias, but I imagine the Heroes Lorebook was more profitable than the other.
warlockco 01-24-05, 02:19 AM	Because alot of the old 2E material was being sold online for profit as PDFs also, then WotC decided to stop that policy for some reason.

I do not recall seeing them downloadable from WOTC, probably because of the fact that, they are selling as PDF formats elsewhere.

Yep, RPG Now and SVGames are two of several online retailers that deal with PDFs.

They are still completely useable, just a bit outdated for recent news, but geographical and historical information is very robust. They are some of my most used material from 1E & 2E.
Petrankov 01-27-05, 12:55 PM	If you compare the 3.0 and 3.5 Sourcebooks to 1st and 2nd edition stuff you will see a lot of material simply lifted and reprinted. I still use 2nd edition modules and sourcebooks because most were pretty well done and conversion of NPC's to 3.5 is not difficult. That is part of the problem I have with even obtaining the new area sourcebooks. There is very little original material except for the Prestige Classes and don't we have enough already? Most of the spells are converted from 2nd edition too. Why they didn't make more old products available for free download? I would have to agree with everyone else who posted regarding the sale of those products as PDF's. Why give it away for free when you can make something from it?

You can always find them on ebay, though some of the better 2e books will sell for inflated prices (Planescape for instance, a select few of the books/box sets will sell for triple figures). I'm not sure about the market price for the FR material since they had a much higher print run. And ebay doesn't really count as ordering online when you can pay for stuff by check, M.O. etc.

Kessalin Talira 01-30-05, 08:13 PM	RPGNow takes PayPal payments, and you don't have to have a credit card for it, assuming your bank will allow you to transfer money from them into your paypal account. Worth a shot, at least. It's how I do all my online shopping, and I don't have a credit card. I just plan a week or so in advance and move the money to PayPal, then by the time it's transferred, I'm ready to buy. And, coincidentally, I just bought Secrets of the Magister today.
