My campaign will be moving into the year of Rogue dragons pretty soon. Would the random encounters for dragons become more frequent than normal with the dragons going crazy. Also, would "The Rage" apply to metallics dragon also.

Yes it is affecting the metallic's. I can't discuss it more then that on the boards cause I have to fall back on novel info. :)

Feel free to mention the odd bit of novels sourced dragon-lore so long as the thread is dragons in general, and uses other sources. :D

Flying this dragon across to "Classes, Races & Monsters". Wow .. I always wanted to fly a dragon ;)

The Rage affects all dragons. Evil ones are quicker to fall prey to it but the metallics are definitely affected. The only ones not affected seem to be those cursed with undeath.

As for encounter frequency, I would venture to say yes. The rage affects all dragons and drakes so there would be plenty of opportunities (dependant on the current terrain and the indigenous dragons and dragon-kind) for a scaly encounter.

What is "the rage"?

According to the new novels it was a high magic ritual that the elves of the past caused ALL dragons (when dragons ruled Faerun) to get every couple of years or so. (yes I can't recall the specific amount of time between each natural rage, sorry!) It's also tied into a mythal (no we don't know which one) and the magic basically causes dragons to rage out of control so its easier to kill them.

While information indicates the "Evil" dragons are easily drawn into a "Rage", and "Good" are more resilient (being normally able to go into a deep sleep or polymorth in to humanoid form to avoid.", what would the effects for Gem dragons and other neutrals be? The novel only mentions them once, and other sources are vague.

I have a special place in my heart for Gem dragons, and unfortunately there is little written about them.

Since Big Sister said it's ok:

The new book, "The Rage" (1st in the series about the Year of Rogue Dragons) it says that all dragons are affected by the madness.

Good dragons aren't affected less, they are merely more resistant to it through willpower because they don't want to be killing innocents. Apparently, those that can polymorph into human/other forms are not affected while in those forms, thus many metallic dragons are doing so.

In addition, many metallic dragons have gone into magical hibernation under the care of a group of golds, to lessen their impact on the world. Thus you'll want your random encounter tables to have less metallics on it than otherwise.

As for the affects on Gem Dragons and other neutrals, I imagine it'll be the same as for evils as they probably don't worry so much about the "smaller races."

Apparently Drakes are affected by the rage too (Monster Manual II, I think? Not at home right now.).

Half-dragons are also changed to 'Dragon' type and therefore subject to rage. Rage in game terms is probably closer to a 'frenzy' for those characters who have that ability or can inspire it in others.

However, if you have $5 and live anywhere there are books I highly suggest you pick it up. Book one is a quick read and gives a lot of good setting info for 1373 DR.

Sorry Autosponge, but your second paragraph might be considered inappropriate, you sould check the Novel code of conduct to verify.

Elereth: Exactly, Good's are more resilient to the effects, and under a normal rage, were able to go to sleep on their own to avoid one.

Neutral's are that neutral, so would this then be decided on a individual basis? Those that are more prone to violence are more susceptible, while those that are pacifistic or "friendly" would be able to fight off the effects better?

Just a thought...

So, Laveral, what kind of stuff are you planning for your Year of Rogue Dragons campaign?

I ask because my campaign is also very heavy into the Rogue dragons deal, and I'd love to hear what kinds of ideas you've come up with.

Well one of my games started in that year. ATM I have a twist for one PC. He got hired by a red dragon to hunt down the "thieves" who stole her hoard and return it to her. ATM he's found one of the adventuring band and has managed to negotiate the return of the part of the hoard that NPC has.

I'll probably start throwing in some more gossip and news of dragon activity since he's got to go to Phlan next to find another of the group and the Moonsea is always fun to start dragon attacks.

Actually, my on going campaign deals with a Sharan monk who must have thirteen specific people killed before The Year of the Rogue Dragons. I won't go into detail, because I know one of my players posts on these boards, but the group is traveling a lot and dragon encounters may become more frequent. Right now they are on Elient 24, but they are about to make a long trek to Waterdeep from Balder's Gate and that will take time.

To make sure that you have all the info you need, Rogdor, I'd add that the Cult of the Dragon, and especially their leader Sammaster, are trying to capitalize on the Rage to proselytize Dracolichdom (as a way for Dragons to avoid falling in "the rage").

It even seems that he might be working on some machiavelous plan to make sure that this rage be more potent/long (potentially endless) than the previous rages.

This would be a way to make his argument for Dracolichdom even stronger: "become a powerful eternally-living Dracolich or fall to the rage and become a mindless lizard unable to use magic or to fight intelligently".

So, Laveral, I'd also add up encounters with Dragon Cultists as those are getting more and more active!

Yeah, but Bocklin, that would never happen because it would change Faerun completly. If all dragons suffered from this "Rage," good dragons would go into hiding or suspension as to avoid it and evil ones would be wiped out, eventually, in great hunts. I don't know that I would want my campaign world to travel that route.

With respect, that is what's happening, like it or not. Which is not to say that Sammaster will be successful. But good dragons are going into suspension, and evil dragons are succumbing to the rage, and as of right now, in the Year of Rogue Dragons, this is what adventuring parties may have to deal with.

You might tend to encounter chromatics more often, because they're out rampaging across the countryside. When you did encounter them, they'd tend to be in groups (the flights), and, obviously, they'd be full of homocidal bloodlust.
This assumes that Sammaster and the Cult of the Dragon haven't yet managed to calm too many of the chromatics and shepherd them into their secret strongholds to get turned into dracoliches.
You would definitely tend to encounter metallics less often, because so many of them are hibernating in their secret refuges as per Lareth's plan.

Ok, I guess you missed the point that I was making.

First of all, I understand that this is the way that the realms will go for the year, that isn't the point. The point that I was making in response to Broklin was that it would never become a permanent aspect of the game for dragons to be effected by this "rage" that is overtaking them, and that aspect would be a detriment to the game. In that instance, the function of a dragon in the game would take a drastic shift.

Second, I like dragons to be something awesome, something that the characters should be afraid of, not desensitized to. Dragons should be calculating and careful, not mindless beasts that are under some compulsion.

The story arc is great, and I would love to have a party roll with it and find out what is going wrong. I would even make the angle go in a direction where a party of good characters are trying to stop the Cult of the Dragon and SAVE the chromatics. Why, it would be better to deal with them one on one than in a horde, especially if they have been turned into dracolich, something I have taught my players that can be worse than facing a normal dragon. The power shift that it would give the Cult is just an unacceptable one, and something I can see the players fighting against...

If it were to become the standard, that all dragons in Faerun are shifted to, I would have a problem with that.

Well but the thing is that story arc have been given the OK by WOTC and so it is canon that dragons now rage due to elven high magic cast centuries ago. It is a permanent part of the world now.

I might just have to get the book that this is in first

Lancelot,

I think the YRD will actually end up enhancing your preception of "what dragons should be".

Due to the massive amounts of Drakes that will get dead during this year...the ones who survive will be that much more powerful, awesome, fear inspiring, etc, etc.

While I agree that having tons of Dragons flying around a destroying stuff may "desensitize" people to them.....come on man, flights of Dragons in murderous rages makes for some pretty scary stuff.
I'm in the middle of the book right now. (that's all I have to say about novels).

Anyway, Cult of Dragon, Dracoliches, and other undead Dragons will become a larger group after this "year", mark my words.

Good Luck Hunters,

~Dirk

Ok here is a question related, since the Cult is so active. I may have missed it but when did Sammaster come back to life yet again?

Last i read in the 2e Cult of the Dragon was the bugger had finally been killed off completely. (fighting an avatar and all that good stuff).

When did he come back? How did he do so and is he still a lich or something more?

Sammaster isn't alive, he's undead. He's been undead for quite some time now. He hasn't stopped being undead in any incident where he was "destroyed" because his phylactery was never found. So, every time someone smites the old goat, he finds another body to inhabit--eventually. Apparently his phylactery is so well hidden it seems to take a while for someone to get close enough to it for him to possess. But that, as they say, is another story.

Dirk,

It's not that I don't want dragons in the game, and I do like the idea of terrorizing my teams... I just know that there is very little longevity in my game with that. I won't worry about it right now, running an invasion scenario where the characters are still in 1370, not even close yet, and they will probably be high leveled by the time that they get to the big show and have to take on these dragons (and they will). My thing is, has anyone been up on the back story for Dragon Lance in the age of Mortals, it seems like it could turn out the same way. Really massive dragons ruling the area with nothing to oppose them. Because, like it or not, when wings of dragons take flight I see much of the country side being burned to a crisp or blown to pieces... and there just aren't enough people to oppose them.

It's just bugging me because I am going to have a lot of dead characters in FR.

Well considering the series in question hasn't been completed, we don't know the outcome yet. For all we know Sammaster's plans will be foiled, or that rages will be cured.

So I wouldn't fret over this just now, a few dragon flights are cool for a campaign, but i'll agree a full out 'Rage' would be scary.

This reply from My Byers has some interesting side effects on all of Toril! I wonder how the dragons of Kara-Tur, and the other continents, are going to enjoy being effected!

Mr Byers posted on June 10th when asked on how much of Toril does the high magic spell effect dragons, "I do know how to spell. It's typing that gives me trouble. The Rage is global."

More from Mr. Byers. "Dargoth, I would say yes, to some degree. In other words, some half-dragons and dragonkin would go flat-out bonkers berserko crazy, like true dragons, some would alternate between psychotic episodes and lucidity, some would become more hostile, irascible, and prone to violence, and some would feel little or not effect.

As a rule of thumb, the more closely a hybrid beastie resembled a true dragon, the more leery I'd be of getting amywhere near it during a Rage."
