Hello Fellow Boardmembers,

Can you please give your input on the Year of Rogue Dragons? Specifically, opinions on what will happen. Will it affect metallic dragons as well as chromatics? Will they be organized? What age ranges? Any thoughts from the novel that was written? Please be specific with your ideas, my DM is reading! :D

Thanks,

I am currently running a campaign focused around the Year of Rogue dragons, for more info check out the book "The Rage". Needless to say a dragon rage is coming and all creatures of the dragon type will be affected unless they take extreme and powerful percautions against it!

This title can have a lot of different meanings and usually nothing so obvious when looking for it. Personally, I tend to think the phrase "rogue dragons" means something similiar to a rogue elephant. Elephants are herd creatures and sometimes one of them goes "rogue", or breaks from the pack to go off and do its own thing. Sometimes, these can be dangerous. I am afraid that is all I know about elephants and am sure that someone can enlighten us further, but I think it suffices for the current discussion.

So, the year specifically says the plural form of dragon. If it was a singular form, it could be taken in a number of directions, such as some problem with the ruler of Cormyr, who is sometimes known as the Purple Dragon (or at least could be construed that way). The fact that it is plural makes me think it really means the creature dragons.

If there are a bunch of dragons "going rogue", then they must be breaking away from something. So, the main question is to wonder what it is they are breaking away from? Is it an organization? Is it an idea or belief? Tradition? I must admit that I don't know much about the Council of Wyrms boxed set that came out. I don't know much about dragon society in FR. This could give a hint.

Another question is if this is a concious decision to "go rogue"? Are there dragons that are being controlled? If so, then the term can be associated with a lone elephant that sometimes gets aggressive and goes on a rampage. If it is a conscious decision, then it seems more about a group of dragons that decide to take action on a particular matter and do so of their own accord. So, we don't know which way to interpret the phrase. That's the problem with prophecies. You never understand them until its too late.

I hope this is enough to get the ball rolling.

Well, I haven't read the newest novels, so I can't comment as much as far as that's concerned, but I do own the Council of Wyrms set from 2E. I can't dig it up right now (stuff is still crazy from the recent move), but as I recall, the Council of Wyrms was an actual organization, in which the Dragon elders made decisions and rulings for those dragons who lived on the Blood Isles of Io.

So, if one wants to take into account that aspect of the situation, then perhaps it's a group of Dragons that are going "rogue" against the Council of Wyrms itself.

Doesn't really have much to add to this because right now the only official material for that year is the 1st novel out of 3 and the novel of short stories.

Not sure really what WOTC has planned for this year because of that. But I figure we'd see a few more places destroyed because when a few posters asked about these series of novels we were told it's going to probably be another Realms Shaking Event so that means more destruction. :)

ALL dragons across Toril are affected by the Rage, including the Lung Dragons of Kara-Tur. However, since they're servants of the Celestial Bureaucracy, and can come and go from the spirit world as the please, I doubt the effects of the Rage extend that far, and the Lung dragons would probably retreat there until it passes.

well the one novel and the short story book do give some info. It will affect all dragons - chromatic, metallic and jewel that stay on faerun, awake and in dragon form. it may be able to reach into even transformed awake dragons in times of stress. It doesn't reach out and affect dracolichs however and unless the adventurers succeed in finding a way to end it and put Sammaster out of business permanently it will never end. Or at least so I read from the books.

BTW, the current Dragon Magazine has the stats of the leader of the rogue dragons and the half-golem dragonslayer

Thanks,

Well, based upon the book "the Rage" it will seemingly effect all dragons who are awake, and might possibly effected those who are asleep. Age would seem to be no barrier.

Will they be organized?

Well, the basic premise is that the Rage was instilled in the dragons, by the ancient elves, in order to break their power, make them weaker. It brought an end to the ancient empires of dragonkind. Of course, unlike a berserking human, these raging dragons are, I have been told, capable of casting spells. This would seem to indicate that they are capable of clear thought, and thus organzied action, but obviously that contradicts the authors underlying premise.

So, I highly doubt that the raging dragons will be well organized at all.

As I have said in another thread, the dragons will begin to rage, but before any significant damage is done, the heroes will find a ritual capable of reversing the "rage". They will ultimately perform the spell and Faerun will be saved without any significant alterations.

Would be cool if "Year of the Rogue Dragons" meant a a revolt by a good portion of the Purple Dragons.

Has anyone thought of using Gondegal as the Rogue Dragon. With Azoun out of the way, he could be a formidable and charismatic threat to an unstable empire, an embattled empire looking for a strong leader and a reprieve.

Mebbe I'm nuts, but I thought Gongedal got pulled into Ravenloft and became a Knight of the Shadows.

Really? news to me..... The only material I can recall with him is the two 1e and 2e campaign box sets...... But then I am missing a lot of the 2e Ravenloft material....

Well, and can't the title for the year refer to multiple events in the year, so the dragons' Rage thing, AND the Purple Dragons revolt, or Gondegal, or anything else, really. That would be pretty bizarre, if just everything with the word dragon in it got screwed up somehow... a bit excessive, but it could be interesting...:evillaugh

Oh I can just see a dragon dressed in the obligatory skin tight black leathers tippy-toing through a darkened palace and hiding in the shadows whenever the guards go past. Isn't that what rogues do :D

Bump..

This is great stuff everyone. I can only hope my DM is reading this! I suppose it would be quite nasty to see a gold and red dragon raging in concert! Good grief..

My copy of the novel The Rage is missing in action around here somewhere and I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could give me the dates of the events in the book. Not itemized, just when in 1373 DR the story begins (after the flashback) and how far it goes. My campaign doesn't focus on the YoRD but I'd be remiss to ignore it entirely. I enjoy a nice bit of metaplot from time to time.

There was a mention of Gondegal in either Pirates of the Inner Sea or the underwater one for the Inner Sea. Gondegal is on a ship that is attacked by pirates. He is defeating the enemy solidly when someone recognizes who he really is. After that, the fighting is delayed by the situation. He jumps overboard.

Once again, I can't recall which book, but it is in one of them.

What's this about the Purple Dragons revolting? Do you mean the knights or the actual dragon?

On the topic though, I have read the book, though I'm nowhere near it at the time so I cannot give the dates that have been asked, but as was pointed it out the Title of it has two meanings of course.

One for the basic of the Rage; becoming unprincipled and causing unknown destruction.

Two for when the council brought forth their plan on how they wanted to take care of the Rage and the dragons that refused to follow their law or ruling and are rebelling. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just leave it at that.

On a side note I would like to comment that the autor of said novel is pretty much one of my favorite.

Think that's in the Elminster Ecologies box set in the Sea of Fallen Stars booklet in the rumor section. :)
