| Aulnil02-20-04, 12:19 AM | I have two questions really. As the Year of Wild Magic, 1372, comes to an what kind of things have you done in your campaigns that signify this title, do you have any ideas for the Year of Rogue Dragons, 1373? Also, can anyone come up with any tie-ins from published FR material? Thanx, for any suggestions. |
| Dargoth02-20-04, 01:00 AM | The Year of Rogue Dragons is going to be covered by trilogy of books written by Richard Lee Byer the first book in the trilogy is called Rage and it will involve Dragons So expect to see alot of Angry Dragons roaming country side in 1373 |
| roler02-21-04, 01:11 AM | I feel that Orbs Of Dragonkind are going to be a hot comodity this year.:smirk: |
| Dargoth02-21-04, 01:34 AM | hmm makes you wonder who might have Orb of Dragonkind in the FR The Elves on Evermeet probably have the Gold and Silver orbs as theyve frequently worked with Dragons of those colours. The Cult of the Dragon probably either has or is trying to obtain the orbs for the evil Dragon. The Church of Tiamat in Unther may have some of the evil ones to |
| Mirtek02-21-04, 08:37 AM | I don't think that the elves have any of them. They are allied with the dragons, not their masters. Controlling them through orbs would be tyranny. Even if they has some orbs just for safekeeping, their dragon partners would certainly demand their destruction. I can't imagine they like those items. I also don't think that the church of Tiamat has any. I don't think Tiamat would like the idea of her children being dominated by some lowly members of the lesser races. |
| Aulnil02-21-04, 11:58 AM | I like the Dragon Orb idea. I've actually incorporated Draconians into my own campaign playing off their dilemna with proliferating their kind, i.e. facing extinction, so I guess that could tie in to the upcoming year. But, returning to the topic does anyone have an idea on an adventure hook or means of bringing the Dragon Orbs into Faerun, if you're referring to the artifacts from the Dragon Lance setting? Also, has anyone entertained the idea of having another flight of dragons? |
| Mystery Man02-21-04, 12:26 PM | For me Klauth is going to be instrumental in wreaking havoc and mayhem across the countryside. |

Actually theres a line in the novel Evermeet that makes me think the elves could have them. When the elves summon the metalic dragons to fight the first Dragon rage that threatens Evermeet one of the Metalic Dragons says "We dont have a choice whether to serve you or not" when address he High Mages. |
| Kazaxe02-21-04, 05:30 PM | In the draconomicon, it mentions a great gathering of dragons, the Dragon Moot or sometihng like that, where they go to pledge their allegiance to whichever dragonic god they follow, be it Taimat, Bahamut, or "Sardinor" or whatever the neutral god of dragons was called, can't recall. Anyways, i am using this for the events in the Year of Rogue Dragons. First of all, the dragons are gathering for their Moot in the "Well of Dragons" in the Western Heartlands. Here they come across the Cult of the Dragon and its machinations and base there. This sparks a great debate amongst dragons, wether Lichdom is a defilement of the species, or a means to obtain power and immortality. In the end the dragons have a rift, the dracoliches and their cult allies vs. those that wish to see them annhiliated. Not all dragons partake in this Draconic cival war, but many do, including thus far in my campaign, Balagos, Dlaurgauth, Lareth, Eldensar, and Garnet. BTW< you can imagine what one riled up dragon can do to a city, imagine thousands of them riled up and warring in the skies, so lots of towns without a means of repelling a good sized dragon, are going to bite the dust. Not only does this show my players the carnage caused by the dragons, and heighten their fear of such creatures, but it also eliminates all those little towns on the western heartlands map that i can't find descriptions for lol. |
| Aulnil02-22-04, 03:34 AM | Thanx again for the ideas. I especially like Kazaxe's idea of the moot and insueing debate. I've actually used Klauth and Dlaurgoth in an adventure in which I brought Draconians into the realms. Dlaurgoth has since been entombed in a stasis beneathe Shadowdale, since about 1368. It might be about time he was released. |
| roler02-22-04, 04:43 PM | Khelben probably has a couple. He remembers what happened to Sylune. |
| Shemeska the Marauder02-22-04, 11:26 PM | Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Orbs of Dragonkind all Greyhawk artifacts? Especially since FR has gone the way of no more (easy) connectivity between itself and the Great Wheel (and all of the prime worlds in that prime material), I wouldn't say that any of the orbs existed now or ever on Toril. They're just as likely as finding the hand of Vecna in Sembia, or the sword of Kas in Waterdeep. |

They're just as likely as finding the hand of Vecna in Sembia, or the sword of Kas in Waterdeep. Theres no mention of Greyhawk or GH related material in the Orbs write up in the 3.5 DMG, so there no reason why the Orbs cant be native to the FR. The sword of Kas or eye and Hand of Vecna are another story as those artifacts are specfic to Greyhawk |
| Aulnil02-23-04, 12:45 AM | The Dragon Orbs are artifacts from the Dragon Lance campaign. The best source for info. on their powers are the 2nd edition Dragon Lance boxed set or the Encyclopedia Magica entries, I believe. They're described as both powerful magical items, and seperately as artifacts. As for Khelben having one, that would quite an addition to one's magickal collection, but more would be highly improbable. As for the Orb's existance in the realms, this is a fantasy setting, and any good storyline should be sufficient to incorporate them into one's campaign. That's where I need help. |
| Shemeska the Marauder02-23-04, 01:08 AM | The Dragon Orbs in the DMG are completely different than the artifacts of the same name from Dragonlance. |
| Dargoth02-23-04, 01:12 AM | Im pretty sure the Dragon Orbs are actually 1ed artifacts and orgigionally appeared in the 1ed ed DMG. I also recall that its powers werent listed, it was left for the DM to assign them powers off a major and minor power table |
| Shemeska the Marauder02-23-04, 01:28 AM | Yes, they first popped up in the original DM's guide back in 1979, pages 159-160. That's 6 years before Dragonlance. Also, there's 10 of the Orbs of Dragonkind listed in the 3.5 DMG while in Dragonlance there were 5 Dragon Orbs with a pretty decent backstory to them and their creation as well. Perhaps based on the concept of the Orbs from the DM's guide, but different in form, function and history. Greyhawk originally by default, then a different set with similar or same name in Dragonlance. So they'd be out of place if you go with the 3e FR cosmology (I don't so takes care of that problem for me...) |
| Dargoth02-23-04, 02:43 AM | Theres nothing that specficly ties the orbs to Greyhawk so theres no reason why they couldnt appear in the FR also im pretty sure there where origionally only 3 orbs a Good, Neutral and evil |
| Shemeska the Marauder02-23-04, 03:59 AM | I may be wrong here as I don't recall this firmly, but there were 7 dragon orbs listed in that '79 DMG. Of course if that book was printed before march of that year I wasn't born yet so let's just say I wasn't gaming at that time to have read it back in the day so to speak. So if anyone actually has that book handy and care's to enlighten us, please feel free. Aside from what I'd posted above the reason I'd shy away from using the dragonorbs from the dmg within FR is that since Greyhawk is nominally the setting for core DnD, all of the artifacts listed there in the DMG have ties to events or persons in Greyhawk's history. Of course my game isn't your game, so... :) |
| Dargoth02-23-04, 04:03 AM | Any magic item/Artifact that doesnt have a greyhawk specfic reference is General and useable by any setting. After all the BOVD is in DMG it would be foolish to say just because its in there and GReyahwk is the default setting then no other settings can have a Book of Vile Darkness |
| Aulnil02-23-04, 09:01 AM | About the Dragon Orbs, I think the best compilation of these items is the Encyclopia Magica 2 pgs. 785-795, wherein it describes the Dragon Orb from Dragon Lance and two types of Orb of Dragonkind; one type from the book Eldritch Wizardry and the artifacts detailed in the 2ed Book of Artifacts. I have both the 79 DMG and the Dragon Lance boxed set, so I'll look in those to see what it says about them and get back to everyone, if noone posts anything in the meantime. |
| primemover00302-24-04, 06:50 PM | Well it's nearly Ches 1373 IMC and atm I'm bringing all of my guns to bear in the North. My PC's the Nine of the North are about to face a very old red dragon for the second time. They escaped her lair only through sheer ingenuity and the right equipment at the right time. The Dragon, incensed by this unprovoked aggrevated B&E, will move her Horde and last clutch of Eggs into the Underdark (via her servitors) and then attack any caravans in the Silverymoon pass, and then the Hawk's nest demanding that the adventurers who robbed her be put out of the city and face her or she'll destroy everything moving in the pass. Also because they never completed the adventure Prison of the Flamebringer, I've freed Bazim-Gorag, the minor Slaad Lord. He and his Acolytes of the Hidden Flame are going to BURNINATE the Savage Frontier from the Lurkwood south along the Surbrin. They also failed to destroy the Lich Vargnin's Phylactary in the adventure Beyond the Light of Reason (I use a lot from Dungeon magazine :) ) He's been lying low, re-equipping since the PC's destroyed his previous physical form. Still trying to fit him in again. I'm also using a mini-Incursion plot. A high ranking Githyanki Knight (from the Lich-Queen's Beloved) is trying to provoke the Lord's Alliance into sending a group of powerful adventurers to kill the Lich Queen. To do so he's ordered his Legions to attack the Trade road (Evermoor way) between Waterdeep and the Marches. They'll sack Tribaor and Yartar before they're done. The PC's are involved because the Knight sent a scouting party to find and recruit the Red the PC's are facing now. In fact that's where the PC's learned the location of the dragon's lair!!! |
| Qulie02-25-04, 01:06 AM | I our Campain the year of the rogue dragon we are going to bring back the "King Killer" from the evermeet book. We are going to apply a slight twist the King Killer is going to be make quite afew passes. |
| Aulnil02-25-04, 01:42 AM | Primemover003, That was exactly what I'm looking for. Thanx. Solid workeable ideas anyone can draw off of to incorporate into their own campaign. On a side reference, what Dungeon mags. did you find those adventures in? I think I'll try to pick them up. Appreciate it again, and if you have any more ideas, perhaps about the Moonsea, Dalelands, or Cormyr areas, I love to hear about them. Thanx again. |
| Shylo Slick02-25-04, 01:59 AM | Inferno makes his presence known to the rest of the realms, as he proclaims to have discovered a cure to the dragon rage effects and begins removing the effects permanetly from any dragon wishing it, regardless of it's race. Inferno accuse the Cult of the Dragon of causing this dragon rage thru intentional misuse of the Dragon Orbs Many rogue chromatic and metallic dragons rally under Inferno's banner, his forces quickly crush many of the Cult of the Dragon strongholds, and Inferno seizes control of the Dragon Orbs. Sam the fallen chosen of Mystra and former leader of the Cult of the Dragons returns to Toril as the newly sponsored Dracolich Avatar of Tiamat, and assumes control of all the surviving Cult of the Dragon members. Sam leads an army of dracolichs backed by many of Tiamats chromatics, Infernos followers retreat back to his lair with Sam's army in pursuit, Inferno emerges and challenges Sam to mortal combat, Sam agrees and Inferno orders all his followers to depart, as soon as all of Inferno's followers have left, Sam attacks Inferno with a vengence and soon has Inferno all but destroyed when Inferno produces the Dragons Orbs and enacts a spell that shatters the orbs and causes a realm shaking catalystic explosion that destroys everything within a hundred mile radius, their are no known survivors of the catacylism, all draconics hail the destruction of the orbs. Inferno proclaimed a draconic hero and martyr by his followers, open worship of Inferno begins among all the draconic species. Inferno's draconic followers openly challenge Tiamat's and Bahamuts iron grip on their respected species, a draconic holy war soon breaks out, no way to tell who's on who's side, even among the metallics. Io forbids all draconic dieties from sending any more avatars, and also restricts divine interference by any draconic diety until the dragons of Toril settle this matter themself. Io ascends three new draconic dieties to demi-power status: Nexus......NG - Magic, Good, Metallic, Divination, General Knowledge Inferno....CN - Magic, Nuetral, Any draconic species, Fire, Physical Sciences Sam.........NE - Magic, Evil, Chromatic, Dracoliches, Necromancy |
| Elereth_Berantor02-26-04, 12:32 PM | Originally posted by Dargoth called Rage and it will involve Dragons (emphasis mine) No, really? Thank you, Captain Obvious! :D |
