What would you do?

You've read all the books. You've got a lot of knowledge about a lot of things. You know who, what, where, when, how and why. Oh, you may not know how to cast a spell or you may not know how to use armor and sword...but you know a lot of other things.

What would you do with that knowledge?

Who would you serve?

Where would you go?

Would you have a goal in mind?

Well I'd find a wizard who knows a spell that can turn me into elf, permanently. And then to the Sembia to learn duellist's fighting style.

I'd get paranoid from knowing that every single power group would eventually be after me to get the knowledge I possess and/or to make sure I'll never use it...

So, whom would you turn to for help and protection?

In exchange for that info, many groups would do just that!

You might even be able to make a nice little niche for yourself somewheres....

I'd get to Aglarond, and under the protection of Elminster and the Simbul, A.S.A.P. dodging the evils I know so well and have used to torture PCs on countless occasions.

I feel Elminster would probably the most sympathetic fellow to a person from our "Plane of Existence" seeing as how he has visited here before. I'd just tell him "Ed sent me!"

I would open an inn as close as possible to one of the new Bard Schools and fill it with as much music as possible (of course, some of this would be made by me!) I would share my knowledge with the bardic college as much as I could.

I would also make it a policy to offer employment and accomodation to solo mothers (a group who really struggle to make ends meet in most Faerunian countries), and those who really want to stop scratching a living by selling their bodies.

My life would be filled with music, friendship and study ... and I would also be making a major difference in a few lives :)

Sigh ... aren't dreams nice :)

Well I think just knowing about all those power hungry groups would give you inclinations as to how to avoid them, and as was mentioned give you good incentive to access all the help you know to be there.

I think it's hard for me to say what I'd wanna do...there's so much that would interest me. It's hard to seperate what I think I'd actually be able to do and what I really wanna do because I think it's rockin!

I think if I had the choice I'd be an elf, probably an archer or a wizard, or both! Hmm...I'll get back to you on that :D

First off, bro you can do most of that stuff in real life with a little bit of effort, hard work, and donations. It doesn't have to be a dream.

Now for the forum topic...

Being as how I don't know much about the realms, I'd seek out Elminster and find out how I could get back into this world since he's "visited it once before" as someone noted. If I had read all the books and stuff (working on it) Then I'd do things differently.

First, I'd go find a hot elf and mate with her, leaving a legacy of me behind in the realms. Then, I'd seek out Elminster or anynoe else who can get me back here. I would return to this world and act as a new supreme god of the realms and my new child would be my lead "chosen."

If I couldn't get back, I'd serve good baby, and find a way to have Bane killed. With all of my knowlege I'd have the rest of the heros looking up to ME and protecting ME, I'd be the "oracle" mysterious and vague.....oooooooooo..............sorta cool. I dunno I'll have to think about this more :P

I would most likely make my way into Silverymoon... Hey its the easiest way to find acceptance anywhere within the realms.
I would create a persona for myself and hopefully tag along with some of the merchants for a bit of cash... Soon enough the raod will take me where ever it intended me to go... either to Calimshan... The city of Shadow or Mithril Hall... it dosnet matter!
After a bit of travleing i would start to conduct a bit of a change of character... a quiring skill in swordplay and magic would be first and foremost and a magical transformation into a more elven form would also fit the mould as well....
Basicly i would turn myself into an elven swords man not looking for adventure but allowing it to find me......

Absolutely.

Get. Home. To my. Wife.

Here's how.

I don't know where in Faerun I am, so I lay low until I can reach a person who doesn't want to kill me. I only speak English, so I point at the sun and pantomime prayer.

My new-found friend takes me to a Lathanderite temple.

One comprehend languages later and I'm good to go. I find out the date and the location, then I head to the temple of Gond to prostitute my knowledge.

Hey, I may play a paladin on my off time, but separate me from my bride and it's, "Who do I need to kill?". For the price of a teleport to Shadowdale, I'll:

1. Improve their weapons
Show 'em how to rifle the barrel; fill a brass tube with smokepowder cap it with a tapered bullet, put a percussive cap in the bottom, and I've just advanced their firearms by decades if not centuries.

2. Build a steam engine
Get a pot capped with an inverted funnel, fill with water, then cover the funnel while heating the pot to build up pressure. Over the funnel, set up a light-weight water wheel. Remove the funnel cover and presto.

3. Build a hot-air balloon
Not hard after the steam engine thing.

4. Offer aerodynamic wing cross-section diagrams
I'm sure they'll find a use for it somehow.

Upon arrival in Shadowdale, I go to Elminster's tower, sit down on his doorstep and wait for him. I reckon when I address him as "King of Athalantar" it'll get his attention.

I'd probably try to hang out in a dwarven community for a while, talking little and doing hard labour, just so I can shave off those 50 pounds that have been hounding me for the last 3 years while learning the Dethek alphabet...

When I'd feel more comfortable talking (or after I'd have learned how to), I'd start making several Mechanical Engineering "suggestions" around the place, working them out with the local thinkerer, and so on.

I'd try to travel as little as possible (I can't imagine myself ever facing an orc...) I'd probably settle in the dwarven community, try to find a wife sooner or later (by going on weekly visits to the nearby human farming community), and make a lot of little native outsiders in the years following my marriage. :)

I'd probably be too scared to get involved with any power group... it's like saying that if you know something, you'd start crank calling the KGB or FBI about it... not a good idea!!

I think I would try and get myself apprenticed to one of the wizards in the Realms, be he or she evil or not, invent a spell to get myself back here and then use my arcane knowledge to become rich here.

That or I'd run of to the nearest tavern/inn/bar to try out all those famous drinks. Zzar, firewine, elverquisst...

okay this is easy.

First i would find a wizard both powerful enough and willing to use a wish spell and make me a drow.

Second i would learn as much magic as possible so that i don't get beaten to death traveling through the underdark to reach Menzoberranzan.

Thirdly, Once there i would either, fight, kill, maim, torture or if it comes to it beg to be allowed to become a master of sorcere.

Fourthly i would begin to creata clandestine group of vharuan worshipping males and also assimilate all of the other revolutionary groups and overthrow the matron mothers and priestesses. Then i would let Gromph rule for a short time while i gathered resources and power enough to overthrow him and become King of Menzoberranzan

also i would do this before lolth came back
and i might ally myself with the other races of the underdark for a short time to accomplish this. I'm sure they'd love to help me for a share of the spoils plus information that i know. Then i would lead the Lordly Drow Army to Earth and take over using superior magic and such.

Well I took a quiz on the net to find out what DnD character I would be in 'real' life. I was suprised:

LG Elf Cleric/Ranger of Miellikki

But if I given the opportunity I would do what Cyric did. Be a rogue, kill a god, become a god then read my own book and go insane.

Now that is a plan.

I'd find out that little blurb Elminster alway says about what is and isn't true or up to date would be the only accurate part in the book as the cannibalistic inhabitants of Waterdeep cooked me up with my friends who were dumb enough to believe in me.

Or my favorite PC would have a sword with my name on it.

First of where did you take this quiz ?

I would look for the closest church of Oghma , get literate at commen , further my studies of the martial arts and enlighten the local Clerics with my knowledge. Witholding my knowledge of technology , because that would be the downfall of Toril.
Eventually I'd be working as hard as I can to increase the church of Eldath! And to be honest I would never try to get back home.

I'd go to Waterdeep, find Volo, and do consulting work. Sell info, so to speak. And get rich off publishing.

I have a feeling I'd be an ideal devotee of Waukeen. Never underestimate the power of wealth.

Though I'm sure I could prostitute my knowledge between Volo and Candlekeep. Ha! What I know can destroy realms! Rulers! And Candlekeep charges thousands of gold pieces for that info! What would they pay ME to give them even more knowledge?Bwahahahahahaha.

The idea of making oneself a "literal" character is cool. I'm beginning to imagine what Feats I'd have...and what everyone from OUR world would have entering Faerun.

I'd go become a cleric of mystra toot-sweet...i already know how to use shuriken so i'd be good to go there... and work my way towards trying to get her to notice me enough to become a chosen....then turn and SLAY all the other chosen...except Quile...take her as my bride and pump out little 1/2 drow babies

07-07-03, 09:42 PM
lemme think... If I came into the realms first I would run around in circles screaming in utter fear.... Secondly after I get my act together... I would think... somehow get myself to a temple of Oghma learn common, travel Thay... Have a talk With Szass Tam, cut him deal with him... aka make me moderately powerful and I will give him knowledge... I know he will accept and wont try to kill me for a while... once power is attained... Turn my own knowledge against Szass Tam as I turn all my knowledge to those that harp, bringing Mr. Evil Lich down or at least off my back... After that I would move to Amn where I would make the council buy my knowledge and then travel to Waterdeep. With my Knowledge of Undermountain I would head down there with a couple likeminded adventurers... get some booty... **** in my pants if I see any monster (while casting magic missile.... realistically those guys would be really very very scary hehe)... Get loot... make myself more powerful... Go Say hello to Eliminster, tell him of my situation... my problems, my life, watch him say no I wont help you... *sob* .... go back... Go to Luskan offer my services there... become more powerful... leave Luskan... Go to the Silver Marshes... Get some odd lore from there... become more powerful... then with this power go to Cormanthor... get more magical items and Lore... go and kill that annoying know-it-all eliminster because he didnt help me... Take break relax... force a huge army of orcs (I would be used to their ugly faces) under my command... Over-run the North... Destroy Waterdeep... Kill the Orcs I was commanding... gather all the lore and magic for myself... move to Amn buy a very big house and become a council member... and then try to find my way back home...

If that doesn't work, I'd keep a low profile for a while, learning Faerunian Common and all those other nifty languages which probably don't sound anything like English or French. Understanding people should help alot.

Then I'd probably train myself to get into some useful "class", probably as a wizard because face it, they're the movers and shakers amongst the mortals.

With some wizardly powers, I'll be free to pursue whatever I want or even try to go back home. I don't think I'd be stupid enough to try to change how things work in that world, considering it's pretty much suicide.

Then maybe I'd contemplate lichdom, find myself a cute lich sorceress then build a cozy love "doom" in the underdark. :D ;)

I think I'd have a mage cast a banishment spell on me. Think about it, we're not native outsiders. We were born on and came from a different plane. I'm sure there's some kind of low level spell that could do it in exchange for some of the spells I know... such as the material components for Karsus' Avatar. :smirk:

I think I'd be a mage because I don't think I'm physical enough for any other the other classes.

I might be a bard, seeing as how I'd know quite a bit (I'm a FR fanatic and have read just about everything published and currently in circulation), and I play a few instruments.

Maybe a low level fighter, but I'm not really that good on the physical side.

If I were a cleric, I'd be a cleric of either Mystra ('cause she's just sweet) or Sharess (oh yeah... ^_^)

Wise enough for monk hood, but not got the physical skills.

I like nature and camping, but not to the extent that Rangers and Druids take it.

I could get by as a rogue. I'm a fast thinker and have deft hands. Not really a tough guy though.

I definitely couldn't make it as a Paladin. I got the duty thing down, but not the black and white ethics.

Ah, hmmm let me think

I'd travel along the safest roads to waterdeep and go to the nearest shop.
There I sell my watch for, oh say 500gp and visit the Gentle mermaid.

After drinking a glass of elven wine, I check out the concubines.
Hoping to see a drow female or elven maiden available as escort

:smirk:

After that, I'll ask audience with Piergeiron at castle waterdeep and explain my situation.
I offer my services as advisor / informant and enlist at the order of magists to learn the arcane arts.

But I doubt I'd even get to Waterdeep, because the first bearded dwarven female I'd encounter would probably beat the living day light out of me when I make fun of her. :D

Depends on how I get there. If by storm, then freak out for a few minutes, if by waking up and being there, then freak out for a few minutes.

If by the divine grace of Tymora, I find out I am in the Realms, I will say Oghma, and make little gestures to travel. Hopefully, I run into militia or harpers, and not followers of Shar or the other Dark Deities. Sure, I could defend myself with martial arts, but I doubt I would last long. Once there, I would learn common and elven, to read/write/speak. Travel to Silverymoon, my favorite place, and try and recieve training in both the martial and arcane/divine arts. I would like to either become a member of the Ardant Legion, or if I am lucky, a Knight In Silver, or if I am graced by the Gods, a Priest of Either :Mystra, Selune, Meleikki, or Silvanus. Perhaps latter two Druids ;). I would try half-heartedly to return to Earth, but in my heart, I would probably more happy in the Realms.

Hey, cwslyclgh, what do you mean "even"? I've been to that cottage (Canadians call it a cottage, UNLESS it really is made of logs, and neither of Ed's are, nor his boathouse nor rotting-back-into-the-forest sleeping A-frame nor toolshed nor outhouse), and it's not so bad. Rustic, but crammed full of books, and games, and usually pretty girls, too. :}

Lol, I second that emotion! Hey, just because I'm a Christian doesn't mean that I have to support him. I'm what you call "liberal in religious views".

Well, I felt like this after I played Baldur's Gate II and after a couple of my game sessions lately. I always imagined myself as a Bhaalspawn, but I'm going to make one of my PC's that, so......

Anyhow, I'd be a half tallfellow halfling/half elf rouge. I always imagined myself and my players characters, but you didn't say we could do that, so.....

I'd probably just start an adventuring group. Anywhere between the Dalelands and southern Tethyr, between Waterdeep and Raheman.... Candlekeep would be great for awhile, but I'd have a hard time with the unbearable calm after awhile. Rather than meet famous characters, I'd rather meet the less famous heros of the realms, meet some of the BG characters maybe.... I think I'll write more later.

P.S.: They say that you can get about anything when your eternal reward comes about. Welll.................... ;)
I think I made me choice already. :D

Oh, that's easy.

I'm already pretty good with the Katana through my Ninjutsu training.

So, I'd hopefully be in/near Waterdeep or Silverymoon. Once I found someone who could help me learn Chondothan and some Common, I'd get myself a sword and hire myself as a guard/adventurer at the nearest temple of Sune or Sharess. During my off-time, I'd sell secrets of the Realms to clerics of Oghma and reps from Candlekeep, and use my knowledge of Physics and Math to help the Gondsmen make cool stuff.

Find a nice girl (human, half-elf, elf, or any subrace... Hmm Avariel would be cool), settle down, and have a family.

Yep.

Oh, I'd try to keep a low profile. :D

First, I'd get a mage of moderate power to teach me the Art. From there, its a simple matter or adventuring, gaining wealth, power, and spells, and then I work on my ultimate goal: The total and absolute destruction of the Gondish church!!! (And hence, Gond) :smirk:
Thrudjelmer

07-13-03, 10:55 AM
Destruction of Gond? Bah, I would spend my time working against all the gods and eventually usurp their power... becoming the new god of magic would be fun.

Failing divine aspirations within Faerun, I guess my second preference would be to find a cleric or mage who could forge magic rings... after discovering how useful it is to have Comprehend Languages or Tongues, I'd want a ring that gives me that ability constantly. (Learn the languages? Nah, too much effort.) I would, of course, trade a limited amount of useful information to pay for this ring.

Once I can communicate with everyone, I would then use my knowledge to make some money --okay, lots of money-- so I can equip myself with powerful magic (a +5 longsword with a few special powers would be a good start, as would bracers of armor +10). Now, once I have some potential to defend myself... its off to Waterdeep to live the good life until I run out of gold.

It had to be said
Go to either Mithral Hall or Icewind Dale, whichever he is in, befriend Drizzt Do'Urden, and get him to train me, then go anventuring with him for a little bit. If I could, mine a little mithral, and start the industrial revolution. Slowly, begin equiping the evil guys with better weapons and armor(ed tranportation), then, sell the good guys the same equipment at a higher price, because I am the only manufacturer. Buy the services of powerful magic users to both train me and enchant my merchandice. Then, sell the magic technology to the evil guys at 10 times what I sold the stuff to the good guys, then sell to the good guys at even higher prices. Buy I kingdom, or two, and begin to slowly consume the world. Start to sell my produces in the underdark and on other planes, start a multi-planer corporation with me as the soul stoke holder. Get divine assistance in my new upgrade and bring the world into a new unknown era. assassinate all that get in my way. Then , when I come to die, thank Cyric for my fortune and die a happy elf.

Depends.

CONDITION ONE: ME, MYSELF, AND I
I am warped to Faerun and I am still in my own body. To this end, I would probably become a wandering fool, although my knowedge with mathamatics would put me one above most other commoners. I would learn Faerunian Common, although I have been lead to believe (by various internet sites that say "Common to Drow!" or "Common to Dwarven!) that Common sounds exactly the same as English. Regardless, I would make my way to the Icewind Dale. I'm not so foolhardy to believe, however, that I would survive by myself while wadering the Sword Coast, Waterdeep, Luskan, etc. Therefor I would hook up with a trade caravan. Once in the Icewind Dale, I am again not so foolhardy as to believe that I could survive very easily. i would train myself in the basics of combat, then live out the rest of my life in seclusion: keep in mind that I'd be smarter then most people on Faerun, so they'd want my knowledge, and I wouldn't want to risk such a thing falling into the wrong hands. I'd try to meet Drizzt, though, and get him to teach me Drow.

Of course, that's just the ideal. What I'd really like to do is learn a bit of Wizardry, I'd try to right wrongs, and then eventually if I gained enough levels I'd let power corrupt me and become a bad guy...but a smart one.

CONDITION TWO: INVASION OF THE BODY-SNATCHERS
This is the scenerio wherein I am warped into the body of a Faerunite. if I was warped into a commoner's body, then i would simply follow the above conditions. If I was warped into a great hero's body - Drizzt, for example - then I would imidiately tell thier friends of the perdicament. if I was warped into a great villain's body, then I would find a great hero and imidiately tell them of the perdicament.

Real people don't have levels. According to the story line and the current rules Drizzt was 10th level before he was 30 and gained one level in the next 10 years.

Well, I'm a musician in this world, with some martial arts and swordplay skills.

Finding myself in the Realms, I'd probably head to the nearest temple of Lliira. The Lliirans appreciate good music, and throw ALL the best parties. I'll do some playing throughout the region, attract a few other musicians/ bards to form a band, and slowly build a following. With my knowledge of Earthly music theory, the knowledge of Realmspace granted by my reading on Earth, my own compositional skills, and the ability to build magically enhanced instruments... drool... I'll soon be THE musical artist on the planet.

My biggest fan, The Simbul , will hire my services to entertain her occasional powerful guests, she dumps Elminster because he ATONALLY HUMS ALONG WITH EVERYTHING I PLAY, marries me, and we live happily ever after. Until I decide to become immortal...

My fanbase continues to grow, eventually providing me with enough support to become a lesser deity, alongside Lliira.

Or something like that...

(And now, on trumpet, percussion, lute, and vocals, your FAVORITE lesser deity of music and cheap thrills, the ONE and ONLY, Jhareth of house Noquar!!! <feeble applause>)

I would be a cleric, no doubt here!

In this world I don`t believe in God but I have a high moral code and I long to fight evil in all its form. In the Realms (where gods exist) I would definitely search out a temple of Torm and begin training as a cleric (even though I am 26 already, you know: "Too old he is").

Additionally I would write down everything I know and have it send to Elminster.

After a certain level of skill I would join a righteous adventuring band and battle evil ...or die trying. Since I know every book (including adventures) I know where the traps and monsters are, and I know their weaknesses from the Monster Manual.

Though I`m very happy with my life on earth I would never return because if you die in the Realms there`s an afterlife at your god`s side.

Well, perhaps I should choose Sune as patron deity :D

What do you think I meant by "Now, once I have some potential to defend myself... its off to Waterdeep to live the good life until I run out of gold"?

Of course I'd want to mate with some fantasy women... I'd want to experiment with as many as possible, definitely including all the elven subraces. I'd also be interested in halfling, possibly an attractive gnome and/or dwarf, and even a half-orc woman if she was properly bathed and not all funky-looking.

I also figure that in a city like Waterdeep, I'm bound to meet all kinds of interesting women beyond the typical races... maybe find me an aasimar or tiefling to spend a weekend or a few years with. The possibilities are only as endless as how much gold I have to continue living a life of luxury in such a city.

Lets see... first i would find a powerfull wizard that could polymorph me into a Prismatic Dragon.:smirk: Then i would establish my lair somewhere in the Underdark, possibly the now empty cavern that housed Ched Nasad. Then i would start going out and demolishing great cities and make a name for myself as well as start to build my treasure hoard with what i find in those cities. I would probably ally myself with some other Dragons with simillar intrests as myself to secure myself from attack, as im sure i would make alot of kindly folk mad destroying city after city like the raging Tarrasque.

... Or maybe i would go to the Abyss, and use my knowledge of Abyssal Politics to elivate my position with the demons and theyre spawn, and just maybe bring back an army of demonic followers from that terrible place, thus becoming even more powerfull. Damn.... im evil. :b: :b: :b:

I'd find my character and hang out with him for a while.

What a great idea!! Of course!! Glad I often played paladins that own a castle.

I would explore the Realms from one end to the other. I want to see the Splendor of Waterdeep, I would travel the icy lands of Icewind Dale, I want to go into the High Forest and buy at a bazar in Calimport. I would visit every place in the Realms.

My life would be too short by far to explore all the Realms. An elfs lifespan is needed.

And all the while I gain XP
Kantor Brightblade

07-18-03, 03:28 AM
I totally agree with the meeting of ones character idea.....my favorite character was a Half-Elven Ranger....with a drinking problem and an affinity for plush pillows. After a successful adventure he'd find a cleric of Sune for a nice romp. He called them the "Sex Paladins" hehehe. No chance of diseases with Cure Disease spells and whatnot...but I digress.

I thought on this long and hard and it occured to me, if someone were to be implanted in the realms with all the knowledge of the books, supplements, etc......wouldn't the GODS themselves fear us? We have the power to thwart them. Granted, we have no training in any of the arts, no weapon skills unless trained on Earth....but the knowledge and application of that knowledge would even raise an eyebrow from Ao...

That said..I have no respect for authority. I hate rules. So I think what I would do first is travel to Cormyr and enlist in the army.

Become a Purple Dragon Knight....and THEN once I have established my place as a useful soldier. Seek audience with the Steel Regent and offer my knowledge of the Realms......assuming they don't think I'm mad....or a spy.....

All this hinges that any of the gods don't kill me outright...kidnap me or turn me into a naked gorillian.

I'm not entirely sure I would want to come back home....if I had the ability to sure...but then that ability might be taken advantage of by some higher power and Earth would be doomed.

But hey, speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil right?

I'd head to Shadowdale or Aglarond, and beg to be sent home. I might make for Waterdeep to beg, if I could be sure I'd meet Laeral before Khelben (It's not that I don't trust him- I do. I trust him to do what's best for Waterdeep, or the Moonstars, or the Realms in general, and if that meant keeping me around for awhile or killing me, then that's what he'd do).

Failing that, I'd head to Silverymoon, and throw myself upon the mercy of Alustriel. I'd become her agent- or whatever she felt I could do for her. She's my favourite Silverhand Sister. If she needed me to be her drudge, then hey- I'd drudge away. If possible, I'd become an apprentice to a wizard, or maybe become a cleric (of Mystra, Selune, Eldath, or Ilmater). I would then serve Alustriel in whatever capacity she would have me. As I said- favourite Silverhand Sister.

Become the greatest swordsman/martial artist in the realms, hire out my blades and fists to the Black Network, the Iron Throne or to whichever organization that can pay me well enough.

As an Epic Fighter20/Monk20, I don't think aging will be a problem. Of course, when my natural lifespan is up, becoming a vampire to continue plaguing the realms.

This is a cool thread. Many very funny posts.

I'd pray I was in my character's form... otherwise I'd be a goner. But hopefully I would be my char.

Well, I'd do what I usually would do (My char would do, at least). Become a Water Savant, etc.

Then, find a nice female Water Genasi (With good qualities ;)), try and woo her (Hopefully succeed :P), and settle down, have a family and several kids, and enjoy a wonderful life.

If I'm not in my character's form, I'd try and become a cleric, then become a Water Savant, then find a nice female Water Genasi with good qualities and try and woo her. Same as if I was my character. But, then I'd find Elminster and try and convince him that I was from a different realm, and ask him to transport me back (And of course take the Water Genasi with me :D). Then, I'd have a family with several kids and enjoy a very very happy life. :D :D :D

Just wanted to know if we could have anything with us upon appearing in the Realms.

Because if we could...I'd bring along packs and packs of M&Ms, Ovaltine, and other cocoa-based goods. Bwahahahhaahahah! I'd make a killing in the Waterdeep market, where chocolate is still ridiculously expensive, it being a relatively new product from Maztica.

Even better, I'd get some enterprising young enchanter/transmuter and set up the chocolates to heighten the natural properties of the the sweet and have the Church of Sharess or Sune enter a partnership for manufacture.

Imagine, a sweet magically enchanced to do what it does best! Bwahahahahahahahaha!

Yes: Chocolate is good for the Realms.

i think that the "find my character" idea is the one to go with. i'd definately hook up with mine. he's a half sun elf soceror/rogue/spellsinger. he's outlived most of his human relations, (many were killed by one of his enemies during and adventure) and has now become the "care-taker" of that side of his family as it goes down the line. i'd show up as a long lost cousin, and try to see what i could learn from being around and travelling with him and the rest of his adventuring party............if i happened to show up in the forgotten realms AS my character, that would be SWEET!!!!!!!! i'd just carry on with the plan of action that i have for him myself.

Hey, if I did, it WOULD be a family. It'd just have to be one that moves around on the road alot... Maybe when the son/daughter is 13, introduce them into the family buisiness....

That said, rampaging dragons and lichlords leave ALOT of widows and orphans. Sometimes in the adventuring lifestyle, it's best to just "remain good friends" until one or the other is ready to retire. Alot less heart wrenching.

Ok, I admit it, and elf WOULD be cool, but....

Following the initial shock and disbelief, and a good drying off (cold water does wonders to clear the head), I'd get me hense to the nearest friendly town. After getting some method of comunication, I'd set about getting some gold. I bet glasiers would be willing to pay alot to get all those wiggles out of their glass. Good money, good use, and none to earth shattering and attention getting.

After getting some light armor, a bow and a big knife, i'd find myself a caravan heading in the direction of Shadowdale and pay the Old Grouch a visit. He shouldn't have too much of a problem letting a chap use his magic door to go home.

After a visit home for science and tech books, guns and a whole load of sundry goods (need that TP! ;) ), I'd head on back for a spell. No sense not taking advantage of the situation is there? Tuition for apprenticeship to a wizard shouldn't cost too much. :D

Good that this topic has been started, I have a back up plan in implementation for just such a scenario. Secretly placed by the DM(me) are benevolent archmages in wilderness areas in stasis awaiting the return of their ubergod, they call him DM. Then I would hook up with which ever was closest and set about doing whatever I wanted because I am the DM and the very world will tremble when I use my latent reality altering powers that all DM's secretly possess. Or in otherwise I would usurp Ao. Anyone else think Ao is just some bored DM? Maybe Ed?

First, I'd find out where the heck I am. Then find the best way to, you guessed it, Longsaddle!!!!! No better place to learn wizardry than living with those goofy Harpells, IMO. I'm sure they'd be as interested as anyone in what little I know about mechanics and such (I'm only 18). Not to mention, I'd be the most popular and interesting thing to hit that place since Drizzt. They went nuts over him in Streams of Silver and he was just from the Underdark. I can't imagine their reactions to someone from a Parallel Dimension.

I'd gain as much power as I could being a wizard, travel a bit. Make sure to make good friends with El. Then combine my powerful magics with El (as a favor to me) to transport all my FR books there. It'd be awesome, I'd give Drizzt everything from The Dark Elf Trilogy to The Thousand Orcs, The Cleric Quintet to Cadderly and so on. Just to see their reactions. I'd also keep a magical Dimensional Gateway open to recieve all the latest FR books!!!

07-24-03, 05:56 PM
I'm not even that familiar with the Realms yet, so I cannot say that I know for certain where the "best" place might be to head to in terms of best chance of survival and what not. Though I think the idea of visiting the Harpells makes a TON of sense...but the city life would call and I know Silverymoon seems like an awfully groovy, open-minded place that could keep a body busy learning for years and years. So I'd probably head there.

Learn a little magic, a lot of fighting skill, and as I'm doing so, collect the best artists, chemists (think antibiotics...I'm not gonna learn to swordfight until I know that a slip of the wrist won't kill my from infection...without needing to depend on a cleric, I mean), smiths, bakers, etc. etc. (just about every field imaginable) in the town together and strike a deal with them. Now I'm not incredibly knowledgable in any deep sense (by this world's standards) of all of these things, but chances are I'd know a little something that could improve thing. I'd teach them at least one (if not several) innovations that will make their businesses not only boom but flat-out explode. I also agree with what someone else said...the little daily necessities (toilet paper, and DEFINITELY a nice razor...since I shave my head...would be high priorities. Well...I suppose indoor plumbing would have to get worked out too...but hey, we can do that). In trade for this knowledge, they'll build me whatever I need, free of cost of course, and give me some fairly massive quantities of money. And, of course, be my friends and associates and help me if I find myself in a tight jam.

So, I'd have some of the comforts from home, a nice pad set up in Silverymoon and be learning as much as I could. After I felt comfortable, out into the world I'd go (preferably with at least one cleric, one badass magic user and a tough guy along....I'm not crazy, afterall). There would, undoubtedly be some races I still hadn't met (even though Silverymoon seems pretty open in that respect) and TONS I hadn't seen or done or learned. So I'd be off to see all of that.

Finally...I'd like to address this idea of getting back to this world...screw that. I'd stay there with a HUGE smile on my face!

:)

Ok, Garnet, explain to me why I'd *want* to get out of the realms. Besides, I want the freedom to be an adventurer.

Ummm...chances are, you might die, get killed, impaled, eaten, fried, mobbed, experimented on, or sold into slavery.

That's assuming one finds oneself in your "real life body" in the Realms.

But heck, if you're your character...go for it. Mate with anyone you have to, for the sake of the gene pool. :)

But seriously? Die of exposure.
Ideally? Learn the languages, learn the Art, adventure and make a difference, teach the gnomes technology, and help the gnomes to their rightful place as rulers of the world. But I'd make sure to explain to everyone that guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Seriously, even without dedicated study, most of us can recreate a vastly higher level of technology than FR is aware of. Make our "inventions", patent them (after explaining capitalism), and make a killing. We are ideal experts.
After that, I'd cozy up to the powers that be to make sure I'd have some protection. Then, maybe then, I'd try to find a way back to this world where evil can only be found in our hearts, and not in a dragon's den or foul tomb. With all my goodies, of course.
If not, then after enough training, start adventuring full-time as a paladin, smiting everyone I detected as evil. :D
Then get killed by the city guard, since this would be real life with real people and real consequences. Then I'd hopefully be rezzed, and I'd atone for my sins and fight against the Zhents.
Ahh, crud, there's just too much I'd want to do to post here.

Well, it would probably take me a few minutes to get my bearings. I wouldn't recognize the terrain, but if I saw anything in writing, I would know. I assume that in the process of being transported there, my spoken English becomes Common. Whether it does or not, meeting anybody else would be a good clue that "we're not in Kansas anymore."

Once I got that part figured out, I would steel some peasant garb. No since looking like a fighter or wizard when I'm not. I might attempt to test out some of my magic skills, see if any of the old studies actually translated into power in my new location.

The next step, of course, is get to Waterdeep. 90% of my FR knowledge is the Sword Coast. In Waterdeep, I could disappear. Get myself Open Locks and Disable Device skills built up with proper training, then climb the "corporate ladder" to get in really tight with the beholder running the guild.

Of course, I would be relying more on my knowledge of this world to advance myself, since my knowledge of the Realms would be historical and somewhat limited at that. But I would make a name for myself.

Depends on where I arrived! (plz not Thay, not THAY!)
I'd hope I appeared in waterdeep or silverymoon, but most certainly not more than a mile outside the later. And the last place I'd wan't to appear is the underdark!
The knowledge I'd have wouldn't do me much good as a slave in Thay or a puppet in the underdark.
But if I had the chance, I'd seek out a mageguild and try to grasp this thing called magic! Or I might join the temple of Torm. One thing I wouldn't is look for a way back home.... why would I?! Sure I have family and friends, girlfriend and computer, but what is that compared to a place where gods grant divine magic and unicorns eksists(and all else on Toril)??

Alternative #1 (any alignment):

Learn the Common language (or steal a wand of tongues) and make good old Savras blush and wish that he'd stayed in his scepter because after I'll have revealed all of my hidden (and true) knowledge of the Realms to everyone he will look like a street gossip-seller as compared to ME! After that, of course, Ao will grant me his divine ranks, since I beat him on his own ground. I will gladly serve Azuth - I don't think life as a demigod in Dweomerhome is all that bad. It is even possible that all of the secrets I reveal will weaken Shar so bad that she becomes an intermediate or lesser deity - and of course, her loss, my gain.

Alternative #2 (LE):

Commit suicide, and strike a deal with the baatezu. I think my knowledge will get me at least to osyluth status on the spot. From that, it's all up - I think I'd enjoy life as a devil, endless, challenging and fun. I also hear erynhies are hot. Of course, little secrets such as Asmodeus' true form may always come in handy...
Moreover, if our Earth belongs to the Great Wheel, I think I could expect some friends of mine to join me in a few decades :smirk:

Alternative #3 (CN):

Kill the first merchant I find on my road (hope those few ju-jitsu death attacks I know will suffice) and rob him. Pay a wizard to plane shift me to Limbo (to learn further martial arts from Githzerai) and put a command-word contingency to plane shift me to Ysgard / Warrior's Rest. Enjoy a lifetime of fights, drinks and women. Die, become a petitioner on Ysgard and repeat it all over, this time forever. Again, I have a few friends who would probably end up on Ysgard after death if they lived in the Great Wheel

First off I'd ****** off and rant for a full day over not being there when I was 10 years younger. Then I'd find someone who could cure my asthma permanently, and hopefully a Tongues and Comprehend Languages spell so I can get around. Then study as a monk and a fighter, take advantage of the fact that I would have the Educated feat out of course and use my knowledge to save up enough money so I can get a dwarf to craft an admantine sword and wizard to enchant the hell out of it. Research some way to retain my youth or attain immortality, don't I'd be successfull considering only wizards know anything in that regard and they horde it to themselves. So then I'd have to figure out a way to become a Chosen of Fenmarel the wild elf loner god, that should get me immortality.

Ooh, boy... Sadly, there are so many unknowns, the most prominent being where I would be dropped. If I were dropped in the middle of Anauroch, not much to do except die...

I would prefer to be dropped either within the vicinity of Waterdeep, or around the Dalelands. Near civilization, I would be able to pull myself together somehow, be it begging, or perhaps selling knowledge of one kind or another. (That being a LAST resort - I would stick to the Prime Directive at all costs.)

I'd learn to use a crossbow - probably hand or light. I would also concentrate heavily on mental discipline - thus, I would be delving for the psionic arts. Rare indeed, however powerful. Save for rogues, best way to blend into the scenery. (Fighters, barbarians, etc bristle with weaponry, clerics and druids proliferate their faith profusely, monks, sorcerors, and wizards almost can't blend in, and bards - I can't sing!)

Time will tell, however, whether returning to Earth would be possible, and perhaps eventually I would call whererever I land home. Failing that, however, I would practice the Craft with diligence. Eventually, I would have to find some way to get involved.

I would travel to Velprintalar, home of the Simbul. To get her attention, I would call her out by name - Alassra Silverhand. I would ally myself with her against the Red Wizards of Thay, evil slavers they are! (At this point, the Prime Directive would be out the window!) Perhaps with Elminster along - probably more to keep a watchful eye on me around Alassra - we'd put a serious dent in the Red Wizards. My purpose being, to free the slaves from bondage. If the opportunity presented itself, taking out Szass Tam would be a most welcome trophy. I would only assist in such an endeavor if Alassra herself made it a personal request, however. (Which I would gladly grant!)

In time, I'd tire of blasting the Red Wizards' heads into piles of mush. Maybe I'd knock Elminster off Alassra's scope, maybe not - in the latter case, I'd leave for Evereska, take in the scenery, and choose an elven wife there.

Whatever the case may be, I would certainly be spreading the secret of Kama Sutra, Sune being my patron deity, and I would wish to make her proud!

I would not seek to achieve the level of divinity, but should Ao grant me such, I would choose to have dominion over psionics, and would call it the Craft. I would choose my allies to be Azuth, Mystra, and Tyr. Were it conceivable, I would take Sune as my lover in divinity, else she would simply be my favorite ally.

Me in the Realms? Would be interesting, to say the least.

First thing, being dazed and confused and lost, I'd probably Barbarian around for a while. Being a Redneck would certainly help, since I've spent more than my share of time living out in the woods. It wouldn't be pretty, but I'd be able to survive off of plants and fish and rainwater for a while. Also having my leatherman tool always on my belt would give me a decent advantage.

Eventually, I'd stumble across a main road or an Elven encampment out in the woods somewhere and would try to communicate. Hopefully someone would be able to cast comprehend languages so we could speak. If not, then I'd pantomime and try to get someone to take me to a church. If I had been living out in the woods by myself for a while, I'd likely be looking pretty ragged, hungry, and possibly hurting - would probably be where someone would take me anyway.

Unless how I arrive there is Terminator-style and I find myself buck naked, I'd likely have my backpack with me. As a college student, that thing's *always* over my shoulder 99% of the time. That would give me more than enough to get me set up. In my backpack alone, there's a portable CD player, a laptop, several diskettes, a graphing calculator, spare batteries and other spare electronic parts of various kinds, as well as textbooks on electronics, physics, statistics, calculus, engineering, chemistry, and natural sciences. Easily enough to advance their current tech level. I'd let the Gondsmen disect things like my wristwatch and ordinary batteries, and I'd explain simple concepts to them like the steam engine and the rifle and any other engineering principles that they might be able to understand. Should easily be enough for me to become quite wealthy.

Not to mention that on my laptop I have a downloaded copy of the three core D&D books and (most importantly) the FR books in case I want to look something up between classes and don't have my actual books with me. I would also sell this knowledge of the Realms as I see fit. I could crush those who I dislike, and help out the good guys. On top of my wealth I'd be able to earn prestige as well as favors from powerful people. I'd end up being one of those creepy Oracle types, like Magus from Chrono Trigger back in the Zeal era. :smirk:

In my spare time, I'd learn wizardry. I'm already used to studying for hours upon hours each day well into the night. Only difference would be the change in topic. I mean, there's archers and assassins and the like here on Earth, but once I came back, I'd be the first and only wizard. There's no end to the use one could get out of Charm Person, Invisibility, Teleportation, various divination spells, and the like. Mindbender PrC too if I could make the right connections. If I ever made it back I'd be set for life. ^_^

While studying the Arcane secrets of the wizards, I'd be looking for a way back. Also I'd be building connections so that one day I might be able to get in touch with Elminster or another absurdly powerful mage. Eventually, I'd either be able to send myself back or would be able to get someone like him to do so for me. But not before I grabbed as many notes as I could in exchange for all my goodies from the future, so that I could continue my studies in the "real world".

That'd be about it, except for one thing. It's not canonical by any means, but there's millions of people in the Realms that have never been mentioned by name in the FRCS or the novels so I don't see why this wouldn't be the case. I have several characters there (as we all do) that became a part of the Realms when my group's D&D campaign started. I know my characters and those of my fellow gamers extremely well, just as well as they do themselves. I'd at least want to meet them and hang out with them in person, if not play on their various weaknesses and/or character quirks to get things that I might want. At the very least I'd be able to get them to work as my personal bodyguards while I'm there :D

I actually have a campaign based in the Realms where all of the PC's came from Earth. I began the session with a freak storm that transported all of the members of the group to the Realms right at the beginning of a play session. They awakened chained in the hold of a slave ship off the Sword Coast. There was a module/adventure that was designed for 0-level characters and during the adventure their actions helped determine their classes, alignments, & proficiencies, etc. The chained in the hold thing was how the published adventure started.

We began this campaign back in 1987 and it is still ongoing. Some of the players/PC's opted to return to Earth when the party was sufficiently high level to accomplish this (Missed Family). The others are now rulers of various kingdoms and it is now an epic level campaign.

Thought this might provide the idea to start some similar campaigns. The use of the NPC's classes in the DM's guide and the "What PC or Alignment" generators on the web would help with classifying the "earth" PC's.

By the way, I'm a former law enforcement officer and I'm currently a municipal judge and martial arts instructor so my PC became a LG Paladin/Monk of Tyr.

Hmmm. With lots of math, science chemestry and Philosophy skills (Thank the gods for liberal arts) I bet I could passably pull off a monk...

I'd have multiple agendas, not necessarily in this order:

1) Learn Common.

2) Find a temple of Oghma and petition for an audience with either a high-ranking cleric or an avatar, and offer the vast quantities of trivia and literary/mechanical knowledge I have in exchange for knowledge of the area, local customs, and a quick means of transportation. Then tell them/him that I think his old rival Leira is still out there in one shape or another...mostly because the so-called "Prince of Lies" is reeeeeally bad at spinning a convincing one.

3) Avoid Thay and Zhentil Keep like the plague.

4) Tell the Lantanese that they're on the right path, but to leave the frelling magic out of it - stick with technology, as it's infinately easier to master and ANYONE can use it. Then teach them how to make an electronic circut, a battery, and a crude lightbulb. Oh, yeah...and the basics of indoor plumbing.

5) Hook up with some devoted followers of Sharess, Lurue, and Liira...then get a wild party started. By the time it's over, they'll be tons of hedonistic thrill-seekers that'll do anything on a dare all over m...HEY, HEY!
6) Get into an arguement with Elminster and/or Khelbun Blackstaff. Call Blackstaff a calous bastard; inform Elminster I'm glad I'll only live a hundred years or so (as I'm sure living the 1000+ he has must be a living hell).

7) Get Tiamat's autograph, and inform her she's an ispiration to video game makers everywhere...then when she asks, "what's a video game?," I can just smile and say, "An addiction millions suffer from, yet joyfully indulge."

Well though not as negative as mirtek, I am a Faerunian realist. 9 times out of 10 Oghma wouldn't let the ideas rattling around in our heads to come out and catch on. He still controls whether an idea lives or dies with it's originator (yes the gods are that Powerful).

Modern firearms, good luck. Hopefully the metallurgy is up to par with the stresses guns take, not to mention the quality processes this level of technology requires.

That aside, as long as we're not dropped into the middle of Anauroch or the Sea of Moving Ice I think MY first move would be to find a stout staff of Oak, ash, or duskwood. then I'd find the nearest road, stream, river, or coastline and follow it till I hit a town or some living being (preferrably human). Once there I'd see if english can translate over to common (let's assume it does or isn't too different, seeing how Dethek and Espruar correlate to our alphabet in the FRCS).

So what skill sets do I have to set me apart from a commoner? Besides reading and writing... not much. I'm no engineer, alchemist, or craftsman. I'd likely either be a courier/scribe, or caravan guard (as I'm in security now, and study journalism. Yea! Profession skill). Easy way to make some coin, shed some pounds, learn more languages, and see the sights. First big city I hit I try to find a cartographer and gain my bearings. With my meager coin I'll by a good sharp dagger, a chain shirt and helm, some sturdy boots, a pack and a tankard of the local bitters. Good way to end a day I always say. Find a common Inn and sing bawdy songs till it's time to sleep. I normally sleep like the dead, but a straw pallet and rough wool blanket would be scratchy enough to drive me a little bonkers not to mention the smell of people in general (or whatever may be sharing the straw of my pallet!!!).

AFAIK they simply wouldn't work anyway.

There's a 2e supplement (which name i forgot) dealing with modern technology brought to Toril from other planets (even from earth, remember, there have been connections betwenn Earth and Toril in the 2e multiverse).

All technology brought to Toril which is advanced over a certain limit simply stops working while on Toril. That's why no one yet conquered Toril with importet jets, tanks and automatic rifles.

It's said that it's the weave (or a general divine order) which is responsible for high technology not working on Toril

Well, on the other side, the 3e DMG states that modern-day firearms and even sci-fi weapons can be used in a D&D setting, making them work like artifacts...

Actually, though, otherwordly technology in D&D is definitely something left to Ao=DM's call.

The DMG is Core D&D. Core D&D also says that divine spell casters can get their spells from an abstract source of power and do not need to worshipp a particular deity, while the FR require a patron deity or you do not get any spells.

In the end you are right, if a DM wants to change this, it's his campaign.

I was just pointing out the official explanation of why the Toril hasn't been already conquered with modern weapons.

I think it's because no one has even tried yet. Besides, all you need is someone with Magneto like powers or a Neo (a.k.a a powerful psion) and firearms are near useless.

There's some 2e supplement telling a few things about this, i just can't remember which one.

Hmm.

I would work my way to Waterdeep (assuming I did not start there) and recruit myself as a court page. I would work my way through the court until I was accepted as a member of the nobility, using my knowledge of all to manipulate those around me.

Working from the shadows, I would direct my minions (whom would be mostly unaware of each other) to carry out tasks, slowly weakening the social order of the city. When the time was right (after years probably) I would call fro the denizens of skullport to rise up and take control of the above-ground city. With the guard in disarray, and the city's leaders held in either fear or contempt, there would be little resistance.

Quietly, I would leave the city, with one of my captains in control. Or better yet, nobody in control. Ah, the chaos.

That's about as far ahead as I can plan. I may be diabolical, but I'm shortsighted.

I'd scream and cry and hide in a corner for the first few days, when hunger finally drew me out, I'd probably seek out an elf just to say "See! You don't look like spock!" then (assuming the elf leaves me in a condition to walk) I'd head for Elminster's tower and get in line behind everyone else already there, though I might be convinced to stop long enough in Waterdeep to enjoy an ale or five and search for my own characters, knowing full well they'd probably leave me in worse condition then the elf had for all the trouble I'd put them through.

Interesting enough this was the basis for a short story competition I once participated in.

That reminds me of something... not that I took part in the contest, but I found on the Net a tale of a man travelling to Toril and meeting his own character (a good drow ranger, "but not a Drizzt clone") at a barbeque with Elminster, Storm, Lhaeo and others... now I understand why he wrote such an "absurd" story!

Well, I think the most practical thing to do would be to search out some gnomes. They are pretty openminded and the least likely to backstab you. Furthermore, once I could get around the language barrier, the gnomes would be able to make the most sense out of any mathematical or technical information I could share. I'd share what I know about math and philosophy, maybe even some martial arts in exchange for some hands on experience with some rangers of baerevan wildwanderer. Then, after a couple years when I was comfortable with my ability to wield a blade or a bow, i'd brave other civilizations, travel the realms, assuming nothing had eaten me or worse, maybe learn the ways of Shaundakul and become a windwalker.

Me in FR? Hmm.. Let's see.

Let's first assume I can get to first town alive, learn language and all the other practicalities. Then I have to make some decisions:

a) Back to Earth? NEVER!!!
b) Getting power? Well.. Yes, power would be nice.
c) Alignment? Neutral has most possibilities.
d) Adventuring? Too dangerous.
e) Being powerful? No, I might make powerful enemies.
f) How to make living? By selling information.
g) Deity? When you die you always get to your deity, so it would sure be nice to have a pleasureble deity... someone like... Sune.

You might already see, what I am thinking... :)

Then actions:

1) Gain money by selling information, but only with very steep price. Accompany with wizards and sell them information. Buy from them some protection (if needed), spells and magic items like:
Hat of Disguise
Eyes of Charming
Cloak fo Charisma
Potions of Charisma
Potions of Love
and of course.. Potions of Cure Disease
2) With this equipment wander around seducing, making love and making offspring with females of every possible race/animal/monster/outsider/aberration...
3) Make Sune blush.
4) Buy a Potion of Sex Change. Drink it and become female.
5) Wander around seducing, making love and making children for males of every possible race/animal/monster/outsider/aberration...
6) Make Sune blush.
7) Become Sune's chosen (she can not resist). Get rid of aging problem.
8) Go meet her and make love to her. Make her blush again. Oh wait, I was female...
9) Buy another Potion of Sex Change. Drink it and become male.
10) Make love to Sune again. Make children with her. Live happily ever since.

It would be so much fun!

Damn... I forgot the Potion of Polymorph Self from the list. It is rather important for comfort reasons.

Sell items..? The idea was to buy them and use them to charm all kinds of things... :)

The base idea is to impress Sune to get to chosen status and get rid of the aging problem. :)

Well I guess one could be a mage doing this also, but you don't need to. You have valuable information you can sell for money. If you want to cast spells like Polymorph Self, you have to be a wizard of at least 7th level. You might get killed before you have the XP for that... Sounds risky to me...

Hmmm.. that's a valid point Dungeon_Master. Romance and mating are quite far apart from each other... I guess there is no god of mating in Faerun either...? Well, if I would not get any chosen status by doing this, I would still have plenty of fun doing it.

Anyway my another point is, that beginning as an adventurer is terribly dangerous. You don't even have a DM, who would put right amount of challenge to your adventures. Risks are tremendous! Most likely one would get killed/eaten in ones first adventure.

Well, the first thing i'd do would be figure out where i am. The second thing i;d almost certainly have to do would eb resist having a complete honest to god mental breakdown. once i had that settled, i'd look for some trustworthy faction (the ahrpers, the waterdeep government, ect) who could send me back in exchange for my vast knowledge of their enemies resources and strategies.

So much talk about introducing new technologies and some talk about guns being bad and guns not killing people but _people_ killing people. Superficially all very well and good, but in fact if the mistakes we in the real world have made is your concern you should all be far, far, far less willing to introduce new technologies; doing so will inevitably introduce scientific thought which will lead to further discoveries, which in turn will lead to the invention of guns etc. Since these discoveries are inevitable anyway, why hurry them on? Instead it would make more sense to prepare for catastrophe and/or try to encourage _wisdom_ in the realms to avert said catastrophe! It seems that the age old factor of greed twists people into seeking personal agrandisment despite what they know will be the ultimate cost to the Realms.

What I'd like to know for all those aspiring chant brokers wanting to sell your "knowledge" to the highest bidder is, do you really think you know anything about the plans of all the evil (or good) forces on faerun because you happened to read the game resource??? Not likely my friends. The Realms are a living breathing place. A shared world belonging to all of us and every little thing we do changes it. So when you magically pop into Faerun and catch caravan to Waterdeep, what do you really expect to know? Do you know the secret hide outs of the Serpent? Will the masked Lords be the same as they were in 1372? Is it even 1372?

Unless you're planning on adventuring, getting your hands on more than a few silver pieces is going to be tricky. The common laborer only makes a few silvers a month. Even skilled artisans make a meager amount compared to an adventuring party who just looted an old tomb and scrounged up some gems and forgotten gold from Ammarindar, Illefarn, or old Illusk.

Meanwhile I'll be honing my skills in combat guarding caravans across miles and miles of miles and miles. From the Gate to the Overland city. If I'm lucky I'll trip over some choice items in the Field of the Dead. Zhent's are known to carry decent gear and treasure.

No, no, NO! It's not "mating" with an avariel. It's having a mature relatioship.

Anyhow, the meaning of life is:

Just as a cruel person can remove the legs from a daddy longlegs, the wings of an avariel can be removed.

. . . as for me, I'd probably find a temple of Meilikki and settle down there, healing the sick [something I'm not too bad at in real life] and spending time in nature. Maybe find a nice elven druid to settle down with. Ah, pipe dreams. :D

I'd definitely travel to Silverymoon, by the by.

No real goals/plans, though. I'd try to avoid political intrigue, and probably adventuring as well - or at least until I got a handle on the world, anyways. :)

Ariel (IIRC), character from baldur's gate 2. Avariel with wings removed. Hence, wingless avariel. Like a legless person. Not normal, but possible.

Heh. I'd make my way over to Elminster's Tower and beg and plead with him to let me take over Lhaeo's former duties. After all, with the shape he's in after being in Hell, his place is bound to be messy and my organizational skills are top-notch. :D
I suppose I would sometimes ask him to tell me a story or two of his adventures, and whenever I get bored and he's not around, I could always go hang with Storm and Sylune. Down the line, I'd probably ask El to teach me a little magic, or Storm the rudiments of bardcraft. I might get to go on an adventure or two with the Knights of Myth Drannor (and Ilistyl is in her late teens, hehe)
Eventually, I would probably just like to travel and see what I can see: the wonders of Evermeet, the beauty of Evereska, the magic of Halruaa, the cosmop of Waterdeep, and so many other places. I would NEVER set foot in the Underdark or Undermountain. I choose life. :D
I honestly don't find the idea of mating with an elf (of any kind) too appealing. Those big insect-like eyes of theirs and too-pointy ears are a total turn-off. Genasi are too...strange for my tastes. Now, a half-elf, that I could probably deal with. As for gods, I would probably worship Sune. Love and Beauty are really what make life worth living IMO.

All this talk about 'mating'. Lip service is paid to the idea of a loving relationship. I'm constantly saddened at the common human.
And why do humans 'mate'? For most of you, it's for fun..for personal pleasure. And why do humans have children? Often they are merely 'consequences'. Again, for most humans, having children is for personal fulfilment. Rarely, if ever, does anyone think about whether or not they _should_ have children; whether or not they will be happy in this 'wonderful' world of ours; whether or not it's in _their_ best interests.
Maybe you need to be a depressive to appreciate this truth but it's a fact nontheless.
And yes, I know this is off topic but is 'mate with this' and 'mate with that' _on_ topic?
[Beats head on wall in frustration at being unable to deny one's own human status.]

Keldor,

I can't help but laugh, but you're absolutely right. This thread seems to have degenerated into a "who's the hottest female being in the Realms," but it's not entirely off-topic. However, it does prove where a majority of the guys here have their brains. Hence, my comment above about all the Sharess converts.

Of course, whether any of these "guys" would ever succeed in meeting (much less successfully copulate with) these objects of obsession would most certainly spark a debate in and of itself. imho They would get blasted even before they threw their first pitch. ohmi

Am I the only one with a plan here?

And some of us are poking fun at the red-blooded young male DND player stereotype. I have to wonder, though, if we are displaced from another realm, would we automatically be subsumed by one of the dieties in FR, or would it be like what happened with other races coming in, i.e. bringing their faith with them? I have to admit, the latter idea brings a smile to my face. So many ramifications!

If the gods do hold over us in FR, then I'd go with Shaundakal. It's so much fun to travel. Do the ranger thing, or bard if I have that sort of talent.

I shudder at the thought. I'm Christian myself, and God is always like, "Thou shalt not have any other gods before me." So, if He were ported into FR, I imagine He'd be quite angry at suddenly finding Himself surrounded by many deities. All I can think is the holy war to end all holy wars: Armageddon comes to Faerun.

Cool thread. I learned from Neverwinter Nights that D&D advancement happens fast according to the rules. NWN had to divide standard experience by 20 just to make the game playable. So...

I'd head to a village, hopefully in the Dales or Cormyr and get work as a stablehand or inn helper. I'd spend my spare time hunting rabbits and small animals in the woods. This should get me a couple of levels of ranger fast. Then I'd find a real ranger to train me and do focused hunting and and monster slaying till I got to the high levels. Maybe do some min/max stuff and score some druid levels.

Once I was tough enough to handle myself and be safe I'd explore. Wander all the wild woods. Cormanthor and the High Forest. All the Dales. Look for the unicorns in the falls. Climb the Star Mounts and the Spine of the World. Sail to the Moonshaes and Zakhara.

Then I'd dedicate myself to Melikii and go around questing to smite evil. Eventually I'd get killed and go to live with her followers in Arcadia and become a kick ass einherar.

Ahh, this is fun. I can see it now...

Im a Christian as well, and this would give some pause. If it did transport god to Toril I would continue following him, if he wasn't transported I would make Selune my patron. I would then either become a sorcerer (doubtful) or get a wizard to teach me his craft and get polymorphed into a sun elf. I would magic missile goblins and kobolds until I got strong enough to do minor adventures with a group. Eventually I would become epic, at that point I would use my great powers (and many ranks in diplomacy and the leadership feat) to retake the high forest and Cormanthor. I would also try reuniting the elven race.:bounce:

Seriously, if any of you found yourselves in the Realms, you and I both know you wouldn't be galavanting off anywhere becoming a master swordsman or an archmage. In all honesty, you'd either end up dead or as a working-class peasant somewhere, trying to eke out a living from a semi-hostile environment. At best, you'd become a minor adventurer, city guard, or someone's henchman. And that's assuming you weren't killed outright when you *poofed* into the Realms in the first place by either a wondering orc or a not-too-scrupulous human who merely kills you outright when you can't even speak his/her language but he/she thinks your clothes would look better on him/her.

Or what if you appeared in a very hot or cold environment somehwere, in the wilderness and far from any urban area? Sure, maybe you could manage to survive on your own wits (and that's a big maybe), but what would happen your first night or two sleeping in the wilderness? Even if you didn't freeze to death or die from a lack of food/water, how long do you think it would be before one of these wonderful creatures your characters rutinely fight stumbles accross you while you sleep and makes a midnight snack out of you?

And what makes you think that as an outisder that you'd even be able to tap into the magical weave once you got there? You might be more like the Yuzhan Vong when they come to the Star Wars galaxy, and are not in touch with the Force...

Anyway, there's my two cents. Call me a cynic, but let's be a little more realistic here.

Firstly I think I would be something like this:

Age: 22
Str: 9
Dex: 15
Con: 9
Int: 14 (provided it is IQ related)
Wis: 12
Cha: 17 (yes this is exceptionally high, but I am very persuasive, good looking, and usually befriend most strangers I meet).

In "reality" I would stand there for a while trying to get my bearings.

I probably wouldn't have a clue where I was, I probably couldn't speak common, and I sure as hell wouldn't want to stumble upon a "Random encounter".

Provided I could find a well travelled road, I would hide and wait for some sort of safe travelling compainion to happen by. I would not want to travel alone, because I could be in a dangerous area and my fighting ability is virtually naught.

Upon meeting these people, be them merchants or adventures, or whatever, I am sure they would be curious about me. Provided I got teleported there with my watch, clothes, cellphone, etc, I would look very strange indeed.

I would travel with these people to the nearest city, if any of them are magical perhaps get a comprehend languages spell cast on myself so I can understand, otherwise I would head to the temple and try and persuade them to cast the same spell upon me.

After being able to communicate, I would find my whereabouts. Not wanting to sell any of my clothes/possesions (they could come in handy later) I would try and find some work for a local scribe/business, using my knowledge of mathmaticals, language, accounting, and what not to get some gold together.

I would buy some clothes to fit into the local community, and I be very reluctant to travel, knowing the dangers that roam the wilderness. After getting a place to stay, and some gold together through advancing at my workplace, I would then travel to the nearests large coastal city (provided I wasn't in one already).

Once there, I would try to aquire some more work, because prices would obviously be greater in the larger city. After working for a couple of years, (still keeping my knowledge of all things technical to myself) I would start up an insurance company

I am pretty sure that this is a new concept for the realms, and I'm fairly sure I could make a large sum of gold off this concept after a while.

After (hopefully) becoming rich, I would purchase some magical items to keep myself safe (cloak of protection +2, gloves of ogre power, girdle of hardiness, healing potions) then propose the local church of Oghma (sp?) to partner me in funding a place for advanced studies (university). At the same time I would expand my business to other areas around the realms- and using funds from by business I would hire guards to well protect my university and the secrets it holds.

Now I've studied science in a minor way at university, but I am no genius, but I know the basic concepts of many things. The first thing I would do with my new founded university is seek out magnets.
From there, I would get buy copper, a golem(off a mage), and use the golem to turn the magnets inside the copper coils - and create electicity!

From there me and my gnomes would go on and create numerous technologies, guarding them closely from scrying and spying. I would then devote these technologies I create to certain parties around the Realms to help them in their cause (Elminster, The Simbul, The Lords of Water Deep, and so forth) always keeping good one step ahead of evil, and in the process meeting a few famous people and befriending them.

This would probably take many years and I would probably become quite rich by then, and then consider settling down in some reclusive place - letting my best gnome run my university, and my best clerk to run my insurance company.
I doubt I would have the time to study magic (altho I would really like to), and I most definately would NOT become an adventurer - far too dangerous.

At this point I would probably have many friends and lots of money, and start up a political campaign using my charimsa and influence to shape my corner of the realms.

-------------------------------------------------

Another interesting concept is if you could take a few items with you (let's say a bag of holdings worth), what would you take?

I would most definately take some science books, a solar power generator, my computer, a gun, and some ammo, and a grahpics calculator.

He he. A Christian diplomat who goes around magic missiling Goblins and Kobolds? No consideration of the idea of redemption and forgiveness? Where is the love and charity? Further, you would quickly become known as Goblin and Kobold enemy No. 1; they would band together and make every effort to eradicate you, certainly recruiting some of the larger and much more deadly evil Goblinoid/humanoid races. You would be terrorised by the likes of the armies of hobgoblin warlords, gnoll and flind chieftains, orc generals with platoons of warg-riding archers with poisoned arrows, orges and their magi and shaman leaders, trolls, maybe even giants. The notion that you would automatically become epic is optimistic to say the least!

[B]Firstly I think I would be something like this:

Cha: 17 (yes this is exceptionally high, but I am very persuasive, good looking, and usually befriend most strangers I meet).

- for the record, immodesty isn't charismatic. Charismatic people simply don't go about saying 'I'm fabulously good-looking' etc.

"I probably wouldn't have a clue where I was, I probably couldn't speak common, and I sure as hell wouldn't want to stumble upon a "Random encounter"."

- for 'probably' read 'definitely' and for 'wouldn't want to', read 'would'.

"Provided I could find a well travelled road, I would hide and wait for some sort of safe travelling compainion to happen by."

- and if you _couldn't_ find such a road? Explain how you would recognise a 'safe travelling companion'. He he.

"Upon meeting these people, be them merchants or adventures, or whatever, I am sure they would be curious about me. Provided I got teleported there with my watch, clothes, cellphone, etc, I would look very strange indeed."

- you would not only look strange but scary. Scary foreigners jabbering in ways which might be construed as magical chanting would not be made welcome!

"I would travel with these people to the nearest city..."

- you would _want_ to travel with these people, but what you want and what youg et are sometimes different things. :)

"After being able to communicate..."

- after finding someone who's not afraid of you and willing to spend the time to teach you common...!

"using my knowledge of mathmaticals, language, accounting, and what not to get some gold together."

- using your crazy ideas and mumbo jumbo you would get some gold together from the local peasants, who earn a few coppers a month.

"I would start up an insurance company...I am pretty sure that this is a new concept for the realms, and I'm fairly sure I could make a large sum of gold off this concept after a while."

- assuming you got this far, you would quickly become known to all the pirates, smugglers, crime lords and even ligitimate businessmen in the area who would consider you and your crazy new ideas a very real threat. I would predict some nasty, unforeseen difficulties to your scheme.

"After (hopefully) becoming rich, I would purchase some magical items to keep myself safe"

- too late! Many enemies already had you in their sights long before you became rich enough to buy fabulous magical items; and _they_ already have their own magical devices, including those for scrying - your every move would likely be forestalled without you having the slightest notion of whom you were crossing.

"I would hire guards to well protect my university and the secrets it holds."

- again, too late; the hired hands are already on the side of your unseen opposition; they hold almost every card e.g. more money, more contacts, more magic, more information.

"From there, I would get buy copper, a golem(off a mage), and use the golem to turn the magnets inside the copper coils - and create electicity!"

- nice plan but I don't see any mage cooperating with his competition. You want to keep your secret and/or hard-earned knowledge safe - so why won't he?

"always keeping good one step ahead of evil, and in the process meeting a few famous people and befriending them."

- not a chance! Read some Sherlock Holmes stories to get an idea of how the evil genius (Moriarty) is _always_ one step ahead of the forces of 'good'. The forces of good sit around happily when all is well, while the machinations of evil are planning. The 'good' cannot work to prevent that which they know nothing of. When 'evil' sets its plans in motion, 'good' can only ever _react_; it is always playing catch-up. If there is genius behind the evil, it will always be capable of staying ahead.

Furthermore, who's to say these famous people won't be jealous of you; feel threatened by you and _not_ want to befriend you?

This is the fun _I_ get from this thread - finding the holes in these grand schemes!

Hmmm...now you've got me thinking about why I _did_ bother to reply. I know it wasn't to spoil the fun...so it must be because it makes more sense to point out where the fantasy comes apart at the seams than to say "Yes, I agree with you - it would be fun to be a god!" Since that is obvious, it goes without saying.

What kind of 'superhero' would I be (if we are to side-step logic)? I would be a riotously funny, witty, suave, rackishly handsome bard, with a voice like a Colm Wilkinson/Enrico Caruso/Freddie Mercury/Placido Domingo/Elvis Presley/Tom Jones (and tens of others I could think of), with the power of acting of a Lawrence Olivier, the mimicry of Peter Sellers and the dancing virtuoso of Gene Kelly - oh, and the writing talents of H.G.Wells and J.R.R. Tolkien. I would charm the pants of every woman I met and desired, and tag along with adventuring parties in order to 'get involved' just enough to get the credibility to go with my tales and songs. Oh yes, and of course, I would write a song to inspire the battleweary troops in a battle to end all battles against the forces of evil on the very crevass of doom - winning us the day and myself the virgin queen! - Hoorah!

If I were 'transported' to FR I would most likely die. :( My outdoor skills are not sufficient to survive in the wilderness and even if they were, the wilderness in FR with all those monsters running about is rather more dangerous than in RL. Furthermore, I would not speak any of the languages (not even common), so although I might be able to communicate on the most basic level using gestures, I would not be able to transfer or receive any more complex ideas, so all my meta-knowledge would be more or less unusable. Eventually, I would starve to death, or freeze to death, or die of dehydration (if in an arid area), or be killed.

There would be only two real possibilities for survival:

1) Chance across somebody willing and able to help, such as a cleric of Lathander
2) Be captured and used as a slave/servant/serf or whatever...

Needless to say, the former option would be far preferable, but not all that likely.

If I found my self in the Forgotten Realms, (assuming I was in Faerun), I would first look to find the nearest good-aligned monk monastery, preferably the Sun Soul, then I would beg and plead to be admitted to the monastery. It would be a sad sight. But it would also be a safe place to be, seeing as how its filled with Bruce Lees.
After I learned some of the basics and got much more skilled, I would venture out to start bar fights, and beat people. As I gradually get stronger and more skilled, I would set my goal at having an undefeated reputation at 10 different taverns.
After that, I would probably train bashing in weak goblin and orc faces. Then I would move on to hobgoblins, bugbears, ogres, and hill giants.
I would probably never try to take on drow until I learned how to deflect arrows, became immune to poisons, and they would have to be surface drow, seeing as how I can't see in the dark.

I think the worst places to end up should one get transported to Faerun is:

the Anauroch

Chult
Thay
Zhentil Keep
the High Forest

These are the places where death due to slavery, monster attacks or exposure are most likely to happen, in my honest opinion.

I knew you'd ask!! :D

- Aglarond has a Mediterranean flavor to it (According to the FRCS), and I like how the old Mediterranean (Give or take a few things)
- It is one of the few countries that does not allow Red Wizard enclaves inside its borders
- It's right on the Sea of Fallen Stars (And has tons of islands off of the mainland)
- Since its on the Sea of Fallen Stars, there is bound to be a temple of Istishia there, so I could join...
- And this is one of (If not the) big reasons of being there-- It's a region where Water Genasi have come from. :u: :D :u:

Yep. And my current NPC I play as a party member has become a bit attached. ;) Nothing serious yet, but its the first person he's ever really LIKED.

I've also put a few other characters in my campaigns. I'm also considering trying to play out a campaign that has a similar plot to the game (with a few creative liberties) if I can find a player who is
A) going too make it to most sessions.
B) Able to play a Bhaalspawn SERIOUSLY. (One of my players is playing an elf who would be Snoop Dogg  , except the elf isnt human, and Snoop Dogg is black. I have nothing against Snoop Dogg (except some of his alleged illegal activities. Last time I checked, weed WAS ILLEGAL.), but rap stars have no place in the FR.,
C) Up to playing it.

Ya. I rip characters off shamelessly. It's no diffrent from letting your party meet Elimister, though.

If given the chance to prepare, I would gather a bunch of rechargable batteries, a solar battery recharger, my cd player and cds, four books (a world history book, a cook book, a welsh-english dictionary and my gaelic-english dictionary), a nice mail shirt, a lazer sharpened rapier (preferably french court style), plenty of art material (paper, pencils, paint, etc.), and extra non-descript clothes.

Since the common human language, as stated before, is similar enough to english, I would find my way to Silverymoon. There I would try to offer my services as cook to the proprietor(s) of The Inn of the Wayward Sages.

Once established there, when not in the kitchen, I would spend some time at the tavern Helmer's Wall talking to the students of the various schools of magic. I would share my knowledge and theories on the nature of reality and astronomy. I would tell tales of the history of my world. In my spare time I would do some paintings and sell them if I can.

I would try to learn some of the other languages of the realms, particularly elvish (from what I've read its similar to either welsh or gaelic).

Once I have a considerable store of wealth, I would find a small place where I could open my own shop, selling my art (possibly fast food too) and giving the students a quiet place to study. I would offer classes in art (painting, drawing, etc.) and hopefully gain the attention of the lady of the city. And every night I would have poetry readings.

Hows that for a plan? The path not of the adventurer, but that of the dedicated artist and theorist.

I would head for Waterdeep, The Gem of the North , and approach the temple of Tyr. Why , you might ask ?? Because here in the R.W. I'm a burn survivor. I've lived through the trauma of being burned over 95% of my body, 70% was burnt 3rd degree and required many (24) surgeries . I would hope and pray that 'Heal' and/or 'Regenerate' would help me regain some health and mobility. If not, oh well , nothing lost. I would then Evangelize and Minister to all on the street and across Faerun about the Great rightious word of Tyr , and the Justice he helps bring to all. I would want to help give to the world what I have taken myself. And show all the love I have felt from mant a stranger already with my real world injury. I would also like to be a sage/Loremaster , to help others discover facts about Faerun. I would love to adventure/Crusade , but at this point in my life I do not think it is a achieveable goal. Though the thought of being in full plate with a heavy lance charging down on my Warhorse ( Destier ) into a mob of Trolls, Giants, Ogres, etc... Whatever. Making them feel the piercing justice of Tyr and Jesus Christ would be exciting. :king: :fight!:

I think I'd grab a laptop, a solar battery recharger (that worked for the laptop batteries too), a CD player, all my CDs, my D&D books (if I had to choose which it would be the FR books), several rifles (notably a 30-06 and a .22, as well as a few pistols, probably a .357 Desert Eagle), as well as the schematics to manufacture said guns and ammo (I think gnomes could handle this). That and a modern compound bow (see how it would match up against a Dalelands longbow). Probably also bring a longsword (if I could figure out where to get one. Maybe one of those Glamdring replicas? :D ).

What would I do?
I'd start as a simple bard, traveling entertaining, and amassing knowledge. I'd then sell my services as spy and informant to the Zhentarim. Once I had worked my way up in their hierarchy, I would establish some of the many powerful adventurers I had met in my travels in the zhentarim as well (people who know how to lie in wait, decieve, and wear disguises for years. Bards, thieves, and rangers primarily). After years of careful planning and strategic placement of inside people I would send out the call to More battle ready adventurers who I had been courting the entire time to start an assault on the zhents. I, with the aid of them, and all the adventurers thay know, and all the adventurers they know, etc. would bring down the Zhentarim from the inside and outside with a simultaneous strike. One against Zhentil keep by a huge force using straight forward battle/seige tactics, the other from the inside with numerous acts of sabotage from breaks in the lines of command to explosions in the armory. I would then collect my well earned spoils and retire to the south of Tethyr, a nice location for an aged adventurer to spend the remainder of his years.

Thats an idea I always liked, but never mentioned since it would probably start a flame war.

You gave me an idea for a campaign though: At the end, the PC's are told by Ao that they will be reincarnated in modern day earth. From there out, play a modern campaign. Wonder if Laughing Otter would let me use his campaign idea...

Obnce I think about it, though, in a way, Christ is closer to Helm, since Helm was the only diety not made mortal, so that sort of signifies a connection between Ao and Helm. But then again, according the the Christian religion, Christ was made mortal, so maybe Illmater would be a closer model.

Hope they dont close the thread because of this. we weren't preaching, just drawing connections and looking at history.

I guess it would all depend on some things

1. Am I my character or myself? (May I be my character, please?)

2.Do I just appear in a random place, or a pre-chosen one (And is it chosen by me or someone else?)

3.Do I get a chance to prepare before going? (This would only really go with being Myself, not My Character.) And how much would I be allowed to bring? A backpack? A little red wagon? A steamer trunk?

IF I am me, with a chance to prepare, I think loading up on books and appearing just outside Candlekeep would be good. Do they BUY books? I need to get some cash. I don't have access to a lot of gold here in the RW, so I couldn't include that in my prep.

I would pretty much be limited to scholarly pursuits, if I were myself. Maybe I should start getting into shape, just in case I one day do get taken to Toril.

If I am my character...I hope I get to choose which character, as I have enough to fill a file cabinet almost. I would hope it was after the game, so I would have already played all of the hard fighting and gaining power and friends.

I would be a Chaotic Neutral succubus. Now there is someone who could rule the world.

(Oh, and I would like to bring a book on plumbing with me. I don't really mind living in rough conditions, but I need my castle to have running water.)

Hmmm, as myself I would miss my hubby and try to find a way to bring him. My character, though...well, as a succubus she isn't exactly monogamous. She doesn't get lonely.

Oh, and to the guy who said he would come "Terminater style", why do you think you would be buck naked AND have your backpack? It seems like it would be an all or nothing deal.

The reason for the nakedness was that they couldn't bring anything with them.

If you want to be naked, more power to you. But that would be a choice you make, and you would remove the clothing yourself.

Or not have the backpack with you, since it is back home with your clothes before you were taken to Toril.

Many answers are quite amusing, but I can tell you of my own visit there, some years ago.

I was quite young, being only 17, and I did not know a thing about the Realms then (and very little about DnD itself). I was hiking in Brittany (a part of France), and somehow I became lost.
I found a necklace half buried in the ground and retrieved it. Something must have hit me, because I lost consciousness then.

When I awoke, I was no longer in a wood, but on a plain, with hills far away, stretching from my left to the front of me. A little shocked, I noticed that the necklace was nowhere to be seen.

I began to walk towards the hills, hoping to meet someone who could help. The night came before I could reach the hills, and I had seen no living creature. I tried to sleep, but I was too nervous to succeed, and I awoke at some shouts and noises, far away. Animal cries, I thought. I looked around, and saw a light very much like I imagined a fire, some distance away. So I walked towards that direction.

Dawn found me hiding behind a rock, staring aghast at the scene of a slaughter, trying not to throw up at the smell and the sight...

A horse, a... human and something else lay dead some feet off me, their flesh charred up and their bodies teared off : one of the arms of the human corpse was lying at my feet, the horse had been eviscerated, and the other creature, which was quite large, had been chopped off, and seemed to have been most burned than the two other corpses.

I ran away as fast as I could, stumbling now and again on the rocks scattered on the ground. And then I saw them.

Three people on horse, riding away from me, guiding their steeds carefully, seemingly watchful of everything. Strangely enough, I was not very surprised at seeing a crossbow, a spear and a sword in their hands. I just ran to them, begging for help.

They stopped and waited for me, weapons ready. I fell over at their feet, pleading for their help. A huge man with a scar on his face dismounted and approached me, his face a mask deprived of any emotions. He said something that I did not understand, harshly. I looked up...
...and received a hard kick in the face. He said something else and I tried to run away, but he caught my hair and punched me in the back. The pain was great, and I fell on my hands, crying. He kicked me once more on the ribs and said something to his companions. One of them climbed from his horse and walked towards me with a rope, and then began to tie my hands and feet, without a look at me. Then the first man took me on his horse and they carried me away from the hills.

I learned some of their language in the few weeks that I stayed their slave. Their names were Lorfa (the huge man, a formidable warrior from the South), Kusnev, the stout man with the rope, who never said a word in the time I spent with them, and Kaliira, a dangerous snake if there was ever one. Quite pretty and very charming if she wanted to, she was the leader of the group and the other two feared her A LOT. She played with me a number of times, trying to seduce me, and I almost fell in love with her, but she was not a very patient one and in the end, I think she would have them torture or kill me for the sheer pleasure of it had they not met with their fate before it could happen.

We were riding across a thick forest and they were wary and I was weary when I heard a whistle. Lorfa fell from his horse almost without a sound. Kusnev jumped from his own horse, while Kaliira pronounced some solemn words aloud, and vanished from my sight!

Her horse neighed and darted forward, causing some confusion among our horses. Since I was myself tied to it, I was dragged alongside it, which probably saved my life.

A few seconds later, I heard some yells, shouts, and other noises behind me. When I managed to steady myself on my feet and look behind, all was over. Kusnev's head was pinned to his saddle by three arrows, Lorfa had not gotten up from the many arrows that had shot him by surprise, and the frozen statue of Kaliira was standing where her horse had been standing before.

A voice cried something from the trees above me. I tried to see who it was, but could only see the leaves. I answered hesitantly that I had not understood. I gave my name and waited. A woman and two men, dressed in green and brown came out of the bushes around and threatened me with their bows. One of the men said something I did not understand, and then the woman spoke in the same language as my captors. "Who are you, and what is your relations with the Zhents?" she asked. I answered as best as I could that I was a prisoner and I did not know where I was. After a few questions, she turned to the tree and said something.

Another 5 people came out of the woods and surrounded me, while the first two men released me from my ties, and helped me with some food and water. Then, they allowed me to sleep for a while.

I awoke naked near a small village of Brittany. My bruises and scars had all disappeared, and there could have been a dream, except for the teeth and the finger I had lost at the hands of the 3 Zhents.

Believe me, I would not like to go there again! It's just too random! :b:

Hehe. Excellent thread... unsurprisingly, 'cause lets admit it, this is a mental exercise we've all done probably several times before... (Or is that just me? Don't think so looking at some of these posts...)

Anyway, personally, I'd hope that I DID end up in Zhentil Keep... a place of great opportunity for any right-minded Banite. Assuming I survived long enough on those streets, I'd make a name for myself as a thief and assassin and attempt to get the attention of either Scyulla Darkhope, Manshoon or Fzoul (preferably one of the first two.... I like strong women, and Manshoon is just too cool... besides, Fzoul a little too powerful and exposed for my liking... I prefer to work 'behind the scenes' Less chance of being struck by the lightening bolt meant for your Master)

Anyway, long-term plan would be to apprentice myself to Manshoon and help the Zhentarim realise the destiny of Bane by conquering the Realms in his name. Faerun would run red with the blood of the innocent and good...

Water Genasi are a bit too wet, Avariel are a little too flighty... most Elves are too poncey. I'd settle for a good old fashioned human girl, or perhaps a female Drow, but it really doesn't matter as long as they were as evil as I am.

Yes! I'm not alone! Good to see someone else out there that's drawn to psychotic women. Or at least mentally unbalanced ones.... (Well, let's face it, how many adventurers have you played that have been entirely stable....? Or is that just me again? :smirk: )

So come on, DM who is this mystery woman/elf/Water Genasi. You'll have to indulge me here... I've read all of the posts on this thread, but having never been inclined to play BG, or BG II (I prefer my RP to be more free-form than a computer game) I have no idea who you are on about...

Oh yeah, should whole Manshoon apprenticeship/Rise of The Zhentarim thing fall through, then it's off to pay a visit to Orbakh and become a Vampire Lieutenant in his organisation and help them. Or possibly working for the Twisted Rune. Or maybe the Cult of the Dragon. An assassin for the Fire Knives would be cool... (can anyone else see a pattern here? Hehe.) The winged elf? Aerie. I can put a picture in if you want. You'd have to admit, she is quite beautiful. Not just looks, either. Quite intelligent and has a nice personality too.

Plus, there's a 500 year (at least) lifespan, which is about the same as my tallfellow halfling/ 1/8th elf rouge (and he's about 5'8", so no hieght problems).

I'm thinking be an adventurer until around age 60, then settle down (if I've amassed enough wealth to live comftorably in a nice house up in the mountains by then). Maybe even at a younger age. Probably still would keep up an adventuring career, only not do as much (gotta be home at least most of the time). And enjoy a long, good life together.

Ok, I'll figure out the link and stuff. Heh, Aerie happens to be a character in my campaign to. And my NPC alter ego has a raging crush. Well, not REALLY a crush, since he really loves her, and the feeling is pretty much mutual.

Got a pic of your genasi?

Of course there's a half troll template! Trolls are like orcs: They'll do anything that (censored for "mature" content ;) ).

Here's picture. I'll take it off if its too big though.

Anyway, I got a new idea: introduce pro-wrestling into the Realms. Tempus' followers would be interested in that, I think, though they probably wouldn't like the scripted part of it. But it's an interesting idea.

Well... guess that proves a picture is worth a thousand words... I can't fault your taste DM, but it ain't for me... it's the eyes... if I came across anyone who looked at me like that, I'd have to put them out of my misery. Can't abide anyone who looks that pathetic. 'course, having her wings removed may have something to do with the look, but still. Warning: Looong post ahead.

I would head for the closest villaige and try to learn common, as well as some decent survival skill. I would then join up with a merchant caravan going to Icewind Dale, and upon arriving there, I would head to Mithril Hall. I would explain my plans to the dwarven residents there, and then they will hopefully equip me for a trip to Menzoberranzan. I would find a relatively lowly Drow house, and I would tell them of the riches of my homeland, and provide information on strategic targets to attack, and I would direct them towards the Supreme Court, in exchange for my freedom. Following the drow's attack, which will hopefully kill most if not all of the Justices, I would work my way home and call the FBI informing on the drow, and, knowing Bush, there will soon be a retalitory strike. I wouldd supply the US with information regarding the Drow's system of government and approximate strength, as well as influential outcasts. The fighting will be tough, but, in their weakened state, Menzoberranzan should fall. When the decision makers decide who will be on the council for the Interim Government, I will suggest Drizz't Do'Urdden, Gromph Beanre, his Daughter, as well as the local head of the Church of Vhaerun. During my time as an informant for the US government, i will submit reports suggesting that the other drow cities are as big a threat to National Security as Menzoberranzan, resulting in the unification of the drow for the first time since the Great Descent, and a massive improvement in the quality of life for the surviving drow slaves, who would undoubtably be freed by now. The resulting Drow nation will hopefully prove to be a strong ally to America, and the portals will allow American companies access to totally new markets, thus lifting the recession and boosting the world economy. I want to be at the first McDonalds opened in another dimension. ;) The opportunities of magic as a tool of business will open doorways for the enterprising entrepreneur, and the will be another Tech boom, only it will be a Magic Boom. Eventually, we will have merged magic with tech flawlessly, and quality of life will take an upshot, but that won't be for many years coming. Eventually we will discover portals to Sigil, and, well, that will open a whole new can of worms.

I want to see the reaction of a dragon the first time tourist groups drop by.

I don't know...... I'm still stuck on Aerie. Besides, I kind of want someone who'd be willing to carry on adventuring for AWHILE (as in as long as needed), but is willing to settle down after awhile. Can't beat personality, intelligence, AND looks, either.

Restoring the wings would be sweet too. Then just buy drouge wings for myself.........

Hehe, you definately do NOT want to see what Jahiera looks like... How did that guy describe her.... Something along the lines of "you are going to do EXACTLY what I tell you" look. That, and I'd have a hard time with someone who called me "child" all the time.

Plus I just preferred Aerie. :D

I don't really think we'd need to learn common though. My guess is it's really just English. Just me though. Or maybe a smattering of European languages (think old English, German, and French all thrown together).

And, according to Monty Python, all you really need to know to be a king is the airspeed of an unladen swallow (but you have to know the AFRICAN the EUROPEAN airspeeds ;) ).

Hmmm.... I don't think Jaheira and I would get along... I work for the government, so I naturally have an ingrained contempt and lack of respect for authority figures, or people who act like they are (you'd be surprised how many closet anarchists work for the government... especially here in England...) what is she, a paladin? Pfff. Damned shiny-faced do gooders. Too straight laced and uptight to have any fun...

Ummm... why would common be english? Technically english is an incredibly difficult and illogically structured language... (the result of being invaded by everyone and their neighbour, and keeping the bits we wanted) Common would most likely be closer to something like French or German, which are structured much more logically. Whatever it is, it would be highly unlikely that we would understand it on arrival in the realms. Comprehend Languages potions/spells would definitely be the way to go... if you could work out how to get someone to give you one, expecially as you'd have very little worthy to trade...
Ainaelin

10-02-03, 05:08 AM
Jaheira was a LN Druid/Fighter, if I remember well.

And yes, she was stuck up. Not fun. Arrogant. Whatever...

As for common... Well, I don't know. :D When I was there, I did not understand their language, but it might not have been Common, so I'm left alone with my guesses...

Well, if it really IS based off french and german... Well, I can say "hello" and yell warning if I stub my toe. It's a start.

I think the best wa to describe Jahiera is "Do as I say, or I beat you with a quarter staff".

Since when is French a "logical language"? :D A language that abolished the number "70" and now uses "sixty-ten" because they got beaten up by Bismarck in 1870?

(There are other funny numbers in France, but I don'know the language. I remember, though, that 90 is "four times twenty and ten". Logical, yeah  :p )

That and I'm good with swords and bows, so I could handle myself as far as combat goes. Just need to learn languages (unless I'm right and Common is just Old English).

Well, considering that 80 is "four-twenty", 90 being "four-twenty-ten" seems quite logical to me... and then, everythin follows logically enough, "four-twenty-eleven", "four-twenty-twelve", "four-twenty-thirteen", and so on and so forth).

Moreover, isn't 70 ten more than 60? And isn't 80 "four times twenty"? You see, everything is logical in French... :D

More seriously, being French, I agree that French IS a difficult language to grasp. English is difficult to master , but not too difficult to grasp
King_Sloth

10-03-03, 03:41 PM
You would think either common would be English since we write the Realms, Greyhawk, and etc.... mainly in English. I thought once about what languages would sound like what R.L. language. Like Dwarven would sound like German and Elvish would be French. Orcish would be Slovic and Goblin would be Spainish. Draconic would sound like Latin and Halfling would be Italian . Gaelic could be Giant and Gnoll would sound like Swahili .
Then I wonder about some of you. Like why is LG stupid?? Just because you value life and look out for others , Like Mother Theresa , does not mean your stupid. And all music is not good. Take Marylin Manson for instance. I find no good in His (it's) music.
But then again, it is a free country here and it is just IMHO. :king:

I'd like to know that too. Why is Lawful Good stupid? I mean, I prefer CG personally, but what's wrong with helping someone occassionally, just out of the goodness in your heart? Nothing's wrong with being a good person.

I'd say English would be easy enough to be common though. Everyone I've talked to says its easier to learn. One of my players hosted a foreign exchange student from Germany, and he said he considered English easier to learn than French or German (for him anyhow).

then again, English is probably one of the harder ones to write, with all the grammar rules.
Ainaelin

10-03-03, 06:39 PM
Why is LG stupid? Well, the answers lies in the Paladin... the fanatical Paladin, I mean... and then, the fanatical LG character, and then, the LG character who thinks that blindly following the Law is a good thing.

But the quote was drawn from a particular context, of course, and one might argue that CG is also stupid, as is any other alignment... Actually, I dislike all Lawful alignments, I'm rather Neutral, tending towards Chaos, although I think that some Order at least is necessary...

But well, what the heck? That was only a quote, a funny one, and I do like it, especially the second part, about IQ 12 :D

As for music, you should know that this character (Ainaelin) is a Elven Bard, and a youngster for that, so he is still somewhat naive... One could argue that even war has its own music (ever heard the French hymn?), msic is almost universal, almost everybody has drawn on music, even tyrants...

But that phrase I still like, nonetheless.;)
tWiStEdDM

10-06-03, 03:49 AM
Interesting question... I've actually no problem with the 'good' part... it's just the 'Lawful' axis that I'm against... not that I deliberately break the rules or anything (hey, I must play the only Epic Level Rogue that's never actually stolen anything) but its just that I find following the rules all the time a little... constraining.

I suppose basic spoken english would be easy enough to learn, and as most of the populace are illiterate (in the Realms) that's all you'd need. Then again, the question is begged, why should it be based on any language we have here ?

That's a point I've often wondered... what would be the reaction of Realms dwellers if you popped in to existence near them? I'm not talking about you're average farmer/peasant type, as they would most likely leg it or try and stick you with a pitchfork, but the real power-players. I mean, we all know so much about them, it'd be kind of weird. I know that if I appeared/met any of them I'd be like, "Wow you're so-and-so and you did this, this and this..." and they'd probably be thinking "Who is this jerk, and how do they know so much about me?" Could be interesting trying to explain to them that where we come from they are all fictional characters...

Yep. Even then, from my understaning all you'dhave to do is pull the bullet off of the catridge and dump smokepowder in, if gunpowder doesnt work. It amazes me how many of the replies are about gaining power and wealth trading off... what? Sure, you know lots about mechanical things, but would Ogma let that knowledge out? Could you make money off what a god wouldn't let you say?

Perhaps you fancy being a mage? Err, know how many YEARS that takes? And that is WITH knowing the language & etc. Plus, first you'd have to convince someone to train you - you have no money and you're a freak... when there are hundreds of apprentice applicants for every mage (you're not the only one who realizes the power of magic), why would a wizard choose to teach you?

Or, perhaps you wish to rely on your fighting skills? Wow, either you are REAL ballsy or you are a bad***. Fighters make money 'cause they get HURT, MAIMED and KILLED (not necessarily in that order). Unlike D&D, getting chopped with a sword in real life removes things like arms, spleens and heads. Fighting orcs, dragons and trolls would be a good way to end up REAL dead, REAL quick... heck, just fighting another dude with a sword would be hairy enough for me!

So, what would I do if I ever got transported to the Realms? I'd crap myself and question my sanity. Then, I'd do my best to learn the language, make some money, and try my best to stay alive. Maybe work towards being a scribe or a storyteller (with my wealth of stories from books, movies and TV). Above all, I would NOT risk death or dismemberment for the momentary exhileration of swinging a sword.

Odd, isn't it, especially considering that Oghma can't control the actions of outsiders...

That is, of course, what I would assume we would be considered should anyone find themselves up [explicative deleted for your protection] creek without a paddle in Toril.

On the other hand, if in the event that Oghma would be a little limey so-and-so, you could always do this:

Contact a cleric of Shaundakul - the god of travel and exploration would surely be able to tell you're F.U.B.A.R. and OBVIOUSLY not from around these parts. Offer to set up a "one-way travel agency," with your home plane and its various exotic locales as tourist destinations. Offer low-low-crazy-low fares in efforts to attract all types of patrons (mostly those who despise their lot in life and the constant bickering/infighting of the local Faerunian tyrants/mages/dieties/etc.). Make sure to get a cut of the gross profits. Not the net. The net is fiction. Live happy, live healthy, and get your azz banished back where it belongs once you've accumulated enough wealth to make Fort Knox look like a piggy bank.

You seem to forget one thing. We would be transported in the Forgotten Realms, which is D&D-rule-based. That is to say that we are not maimed, we have HP, just like our characters, even more as we increase in levels.

As for being able to find a wizard to teach us magic, I think that we may have a lot of things to offer in exchange for all our knowledge of the Realms...

And you would be a scribe or a storyteller? I hope you are good at languages, since it is hard to learn a language enough to write good stories in a foreign language IRL (it is quite easy in the D&D rules, though, as long as you level up...). But you'll have to survive, and if you stay a scribe, a single fall or lost fireball in the city you'll live in could kill you (or hurt, burn, etc...) outright, since you'll only have a couple of HP (1D6 for an Expert, IIRC)

Good luck!

P.S. : Yes, the whole point of the thread is imagination, not rule-mechanic debate, but since you forgot about it, I forgot too... :D

And you have to remember, the gods aren't all powerful (except Ao, that is). So, as far as Oghma not letting memories out, I have to doubt he's THAT powerful.

Hmmmm....... For some reason I'm seeing a story along the lines of Planescape Torment: Amnesiac hero trying to get his memories back.

You know how to Sneak Attack when flanking? Do you have Evasion and Uncanny Dodge?!? :uh-huh:

OOoohhhhh, lucky you... :D

Well, sneak attack is pretty easy. Just sneak up behind the guy, and stab the dagger into their spinal column (immobolizing said guy), or go for an internal organ. Or bash them over the head with a blunt object. A garrot around the neck is advisable, also.

I've got evasion and uncanny dodge too. :D Once you've been attacked by various idiots who think just because you seem weaker makes it fun to pound you, you start getting VERY good at dodging. :D

Might need some help with lockpicking though. I can do the other classic thief skills pretty well though (stealth, balance, find traps, pick pockets, ect).

I don't see why you'd introduce firearms to a world that gets by without them quite well.
i don't like 'em much really...
Why give firearms to a world that already has spellslingers that can throw a fireball on a village and create a massacre.
At least having to study for such powers makes it possible to instill some form of responsibility in a person.
Just being able to buy/make a gun turns every idiot into a possible tyrant.
OK... I should stop now... I guess it's pretty clear already that I'm not pro fire arms. On with the fun.

If I were to be stranded on Faerun...

I'd probably be busy finding out where the hell I am and how I got there for a long time.
Since I'm pretty good a languages I think I'd pick a thing or two up soon enough. (Besides, if you're stuck somewhere and you can only communicate with simple handgestures and such you will see that you pick up the language much quicker than you would ever have thought possible.)

Since I have some crafting skills I'd probably apprentice myself to a smith somewhere. (btw. All of this can only happen if I'm not picked up by some person with little concideration for human rights and/or a high hormone level)
This would earn me a bit of cash over time. My knowledge of Biology is pretty useless in a high magic world so... smithing is my best option.
If I had the innate powers I'd become a sorcerer or psion. I think I would be able to become a wizard if I could find a tutor but I'd rather be a sorcerer.

If in anyway possible I'd find a way to get my boyfriend over there too. (if that's possible than I'd probably also have a way to return home which would be a huge relief) Then travel the world.
See the beasties. Tressym, Unicorns, Dragons, you name it. Especially those big bugs the size of cities just because I know they can't really exist because they'd crush under their own weight.

If I were to become greedy I'd find a way to create a portal between the two worlds and charge people like you huge amounts of money to see Faerun. ;)

I would love to see this magical world as much as I would love to see any part of our own world... I'd also want to return home though. Or at least be able to. I love my friends and family (and especially my boyfriend) too much to be without them for too long.

After my education was complete, I would strike out for the Silver Marches, to the city of Silverymoon. I would begin my adventuring career as a caravan guard, until I gained enough power to join one of the more powerful bands in protecting the Silver Marches. " And lead me not into temptation, 'cuz I can find it by myself."

Assuming I don't find myself too far from civilization and assuming that common = english, I will try to make my way to the nearest friendly power group I can find (Harpers, Moonstars, any City of the Lord's Alliance, or goodly church).

I would do the following:
1) try to sell information that might be useful to friendly power groups. examples:
a) the church of Tyr in Westgate might appreciate knowing that there are indeed vampires in control of the night masks. Even though I don't remember the exact location off hand, I remember the general layout of the Faceless' lair and the fact that several members of the nobility are under the control of (if not themselves) vampires.
b) The harpers and cities of the heartlands might want to know that if Darkhold falls, the Zentharim based in the Moonsea won't lift a finger.
c) The silver marches might like to know where Obould is, why there are giants in the moors, what the shade enclave is up to, the identity of spies (I can think of at least 3 offhand), etc.
d) Tethyr might appreciate knowing how active the Knights of the Shield are in their kingdom, and that lord Hlune is their leader.

This sort of information is sure to be worth at least 100gp each, and I know tons of general info that is similar. I would be careful to avoid giving my real name out (to prevent scrying) and try to keep hidden as much as possible by having the information sold through intermediaries if possible. I would also avoid the temptation to bribe people for NOT revealing information (like the location of a certain moongate, or true name of a certain chosen...)

2) after I've gotten some gold (say around 3-4k), I would head to Waterdeep and try to learn some magic as a wizard. Since I can pay my way, I wouldn't have to spend my days scrubbing pots as an apprentice and can do other things, like...

3) Start a broadsheet business. The current broadsheets used in Waterdeep still rely on woodcarvings. They haven't heard of movable type presses yet, so I'll invent that (I don't think Oghma would mind). I'll start two different broadsheets, a respectable one with current news and events which will be sold cheaply (I'll call the Waterdeep Times), and another one for adventurers with rumors, adventuring tips and potential places for adventure that will cost a bit more (called the Explorer). Maybe a third one as well if there's time for ridiculous stories and pure entertainment (like today's inquirer, the sun or the examiner), targeted towards the trades ward. I'll have the advantage of speed and clarity over other broadsheets (for a few months at least, until the other broadsheet businesses learn about moveable type).

4) Bards, Adventurers, young nobles, and merchants will be my main sources of news, gossip, and information. I would be able to pay them (not much, probably 1 sp-5 gp per news item) from the revenue of the broadsheets.

5) I''l set up trade partnerships with the churches of Waukeen (always up for a good investment) and Lathander (I'll advocate new horizons and new markets for these guys), with whom I'll invest in coffee and cocoa from Maztica (I'll also try to get fresh seeds so that I can get some lcoal people to grow them in greenhouses). Eventually I'll be opening up coffeehouses in several locations around Waterdeep (and eventually all over Faerun). I'll introduce the concept of Franchising basically, and carry this concept over to a tavern type place that specializes in easy to carry food (hamburgers, sandwiches, fried chicken, steamed buns, etc). Even odds on whether or not I will put up golden arches. People in this world appreciate knowing that they can eat something familiar wherever they go. Hopefully this trait carries over in Faerun.

To sum up:
Year 1: Get over shock. Find a friendly power group. Sell secrets. Get money. Go to Waterdeep. Find a wizard tutor.
Year 2: Start Broadsheet businesses. Mingle with adventurers, young nobility, and merchants.
Year 3: Establish coffeehouse and Fast-Food tavern concept.
Year 4-5: Expand all businesses around Sword Coast, the North, and Western Heartlands.
Year 6+: Basically, I'll have tons of money, I'll know a bunch of adventurers and nobility, and I'll be a 1st lvl wizard. I'll invest in several wands, scrolls, potions, and protective devices (and at least one item that can teleport me home). I'll start adventuring gradually, starting with accompanying trade caravans (from merchant contacts that I've made), and eventually joining one of the several adventuring groups I've made friends with. I'll stay out of the underdark as much as possible.

I'll basically be a 1st lvl wizard, going on adventures suitable for 1st lvl people (hunting goblins, protecting caravans, etc.), but with the equipment of a higher level character. With a wand of fireballs and scorching ray, I might even be tempted to go on a Longsaddle-Nesme caravan run.

I'll miss my family and friends on earth, but I would like to learn as much as possible about magic before I even consider returning. The temptation of real magic is just too good to pass.

Why give firearms to a world that already has spellslingers that can throw a fireball on a village and create a massacre.

For two reasons:

1) It gives the villagers a fighting chance against their emotionally unbalanced, megalomaniac overlords.

2) Some people actually DESPISE epic heros/heroines, and would prefer hearing about some average schmoe bashing in a few skulls than someone "chosen by the gods".

I really wonder about something...

The FR is (to us) all about adventuring, monsters, treasures, magic...

However, quite a number of the posts here state that you would basically introduce our own mercantile values upon that world. Introduce modern weapons/finances/inventions, etc...

Tell me, when you play the game, do you play adventurers or merchants?

I understand that this thread is about you and me going to the Realms, not hardened, weather-beaten adventurers. Still, I'm amazed at the number of mercantile capitalist "ideas" that have flourished in this thread.

(Yes, I know commerce does exist, even in the FR)

Very good observation!

I had noticed this too. I guess it is the survival instinct in folks that is coming out. Folks will do what they know or what they wish they could excel at.

Most folks would rather make a few gold pieces rather than face a spell casting monster...

Personally, being a daredevil; I wouldn't mind facing that spell casting monster....however being somewhat bright, I know that my chances at victory would be slim. On the other hand, I know a lot about the Realms and could do great things with that knowledge...

Being a coward, I WOULD mind facing even a weaponless kobold (they have pointed teeth ! They could hurt me! :D

However, If I were in the Realms, I would like to discover as many things as possible. To do that, what better way than a commoner Adventurer? That would be me... If I ever reach 10th level (as a commoner), I would still be afraid of Kobolds.. ;)

I want to live. Yes, I want to see all of Faerun and be an adventurer, but I want to do it on my terms if at all possible (lots of protective items and magical goodies).

To do that, I would need money (remember, you end up in the realms with just the clothes on your back).

Utilizing modern concepts of commerce is really the only way to get money safely. Sure you can sell secrets for a while, but eventually some baddie is gonna kill you just to shut you up.

Remember, you enter the Realms as a low level commoner or expert. You are not a monk or fighter even if you know how to fence or is an expert at martial arts (that would most likely just translate to weapon proficiencies and weapon focus).

So sure, you can go to the Harpers and volunteer to go on adventures ASAP. But other than the knowledge of the realms in your head, you won't really have much to offer them. You will basically be a torch bearer for the real adventurers (and we know how long hirelings last in combat).

So, fight a kobold? Sure, if I have to...but I would rather do that wielding a wand of scorching ray I bought with the 1st quarter proceeds of my coffeehouse franchise.

Both - anyone that legally purchases/sells goods or services can be called a merchant. Just because some people have come to assume that "merchant" implies "business owner" doesn't mean the swap can be universally applied.

Actually, the M-16 deals 2d8 damage, as do all guns that use 5.56 NATO rounds.

Come to think of it, i have changed my mind.

I would start of selling secrets to friendly power groups. After i got enough gold, i would go to Elminster's Tower, and after filling out forms, which can't be any worse than modern tax and cencus forms, and waiting for several hours, (probably passing the time reading one of his books, after asking, of course), i would pay him to make a contact with the Red Knight. I would reveal to her how firearms would revolutionize warfare, thus increasing her power considerably, and ask for some divine protection while i go about revolutionizing warfare, and a bit of divine power eventually, in exchange for the power she would gain when she inevitably goes from demi-power to lesser, intermediate, or possibly even greater power.

I would then go to the closest slum, and begin hiring unskilled laborers for my arms factories, where i would use my knowledge of modern production techniques to mass produce automatic firearms, whom i would sell to the same groups i sold information to. I would also build a power plant, and another factory for making electrical appliances, like light bulbs. Having started the Industrial Revolution, I would sit back and watch the profits roll in, and eventually i would branch out to other cities, and aquire even more wealth. I would eradicate any evil-ish groups that tried to stop me, tried to stop me, like the Zhents or the Iron Throne.

Eventually, when Red Knight becomes more powerful, and i recieved the divine spark, I would go before Ad and ask to become a demi-power of capitalism and advancement. Having become a demi-power, I would begin preaching Christianity, and I would begin bringing Christian missionaries over from Earth. Should any other dieties question this, I would justify it as being in my portfolio of advancement. I would resign from my post at the head of my businesses, passing the reins on to someone else.

I would begin encourage original and scientific thought, and would encourage people to start schools. At times I would come into conflict with Oghma due to the fact he restrains the growth of the Realms, but I should be okay, due to the fact i would cultivate close relationships with Red Knight and Gond, due to the fact that our portfolios overlap to a degree, and with Tyr, with whom I share beliefs ("Evil should be punished").

If one takes damage equal to or greater than their CON score from a single attack, they must make a Fortitude Save DC 15...or else.

So, 2d8 *is* a lot...

All critters use this rule.

:b: as i am most familiar with the north, i would likely end up in the silver Marches or Waterdeep. either way i'd aproach the nearest powerful harper.
(Alustriel or Khelben)i would ask for training in exchange joining thier order.
a bit of fighter(though irl i am a moderate heavy sword, light polearm, and rapier), then i would ask for apprenticed training under the Harper(whichever one). upon powerful levels when im not busy with harper business i would perhaps organize adventures to powerful dungeons(like..undermountain! though anything there would freak me out. its probbly for the better that i'd be a wizard. i could stay back and blast. when youd think about it most peple wouldnt have the guts to fight mosters in melee..if at all...unless they are crazy) in search of lost time magics. after finding what im looking for and having had enough of adventure and the rough life i would travel back in time, stopping myself from ever going. how do i even know this didnt happen? heh. that was fun.
(oh and i'd probly be NG with a hint of LN. my diety? hrm...Kelemvor or mystra...or maybe someone like Red Knight..y'know? planning and the battlefield.)

they may even have a chance o' misfire. cant tell you, cuz i dont have my books with me. bettering the weapons of this type will lead to two things.

" ***'on, gods are not invincible, why woluld they make a man invincible?! you know, Elminster has a quite low initiative bonus (which means that many people may start and attack before he makes any move)... he hasn't got such a high concetration bonus (if he suffers high damage, he loses his spells), he can use the silver-fire, that's right,... but he cannot perfectly control his power... there are many other things that can make you sure you can somehow beat him (fantasy has neither boundaries nor borders... if you put either to fantasy, than you can't win) but it's not up to me saying this... find your ones

please do not make Hadrune fall in love with some kind of good NPCs, please, he is perfect the way he is...

besides, I didn't mean I would make some new Dark Sun out of these FRs, I just meant that sometimes changes are not bad... Faerun would really need some time in the desert a little time without any gods or something like that... think about it. and, please, don't say that FR are different from the rest. Forgotten realms are just another Planet Earth (except that it's called Toril).
think about the continents (Faerun=Europe, Kara-tur=Asia, Maztica=America...).

My group has tossed around the idea of Faerun being a past (or alternate earth...... If you like the multiverse theory of Stephen Hawking or Michael Chrichtons Timeline. This is my favorite scientific idea in the world. :D ). One of my players likes the idea of Ao being God (this one is still under consideration. Anyhow, it's just my groups philisophical discussions. Please dont discuss/start a flamewar about it.).

This all has alot to do with a D20 Modern campaign I'm going to run when I have the books......

I would find my FR characters (taking into account difficulties associated with), and tell them everything about their lives - even deepest, darkest secrets and drives and motivations. This ought to get their attention.

Once done, I'd hope that a few don't kill me on the spot (imagine the paradox that'd create!).

Then we'd set to work on doing what I set out for them to do at character creation.

Cool.

I'd have a similar agenda with my own characters.

Depending on where in the Realms I ended up, I'd probably
be admiring the scenery initially.

Once I realized what was going on, and that the situation is
completely out of the ordinary, I'd do what I try to do in any
situation I don't think my abilities are going to cut it:

Pray to God.

If I were in the realms, well, God created everything, so if he
had a reason to make the realms too, he's still accessible. God's
power is not limited. The prayer request after praising the Lord
is simple: "Lord, what would you have me do?"

I'd still have my own desires of course. Return home to my wife
and the life we have planned, but I can see where it would be
cool to be the ultimate missionary: on an alien world, you must
learn the local language, and then bring the Good News of
Jesus Christ to them.

I'd hope that the Common tongue and similar languages are
close to european -type languages, so I don't have to train
my ears to hear sounds I don't expect (Japanese) or learn
a whole new way of "talking" (tongue click African languages)

Even if I ended up traveling as much as the Apostle Paul, I
would simultaneously be the ultimate tourist. It'd be rough
without my wife along, but the Lord is my shepherd, I shall
not want. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Lord had sent her
with me, anyways.

Lack of modern plumbing and dentistry would suck really bad.
I've yet to hear of "Cure Light Occlusion Cavity" in D&D :-)

I could probably be an awesome accountant since the realms is
still in middle age/renaissance math, and double entry
bookkeeping isn't yet invented.

Learning the Arcane arts might be cool. It would depend if
God led me to them or not. It would be really cool if I was an
apostle-equivalent, and could Raise the Dead without any
diamonds or level loss to anyone :-)

I'd be really annoyed at no digital cameras to take pix of the
awesome scenery, but it would be the ultimate adventure.

Being the Expert class, and learning Disable Device might be
real fun too. I'm not a gymnast, but my hands are steady
enough. Rogue's probably a bit of a stretch.

It would suck if the realms didn't have eyeglass-making ability
though. Then I'd be one piece of bad luck away from always
being nearsighted in a visually awesome world. But, God
provides, so no fear, though some anxiety from time to time,
since I'm only human, and most everything in the realms would
be a surprise, even having read a lot of the novels and game
supplements.

The realms needs a magical internet though. I'd miss not being
able to read new info as often as I want.

Anyone else think it would be cool to explore a whole new world,
working for the Lord?

I agree, that would be interesting...

Ya, the eyglasses would be a problem for me too. I wear contacts, but those are near impossible to find when you drop them.

Oh well, just drop by the local wizards! (they'd have to have a spell that'd work)

I would theorize that if they have rudimentary firearms, eyeglasses should/would also exist. Technologically, they have nothing in common; though one may need the latter to use the former....and necessity is the mother of invention.

The answer is simple.I would find semmemon(probably misspelled). For an evil guy he is trustworthy.I would trade him select pieces of knowledge in exchange for magical training(hopefully a way to unlock inborn sorcery skills)while also learning advanced sword techniques from the best tutor i could afford.(a few "inventions"could set me up quite nicely financially).Once i had achieved a good level of power i would take over a town or small city.Scardale for instance, and wage a war of intrigue with the harpers and the zhents.Expand my realm a little at a time until i had all the land north of sembia and east of cormanthor(basically scardale, harrowdale and the lands to the north on the shore of the moonsea.)once secure i could spend my time annoying harpers, druids, treants, elves and any evil group that irritated me.
Just a modest little dream.

Or clerics... Maybe a Cure Disease or Remove Blindness might work? Some Restore spell as well... In any case, Miracle (or Wish for Arcane spell casters) should definitely work... :D

I'd rather find myself in my homebrew world to be honest. However if I found myself in the realms, I'd find someway to learn the power of arcane magic and unleash the powers of my mind.

I'd go to Silverymoon and meet mine and my friends' characters. Maybe I'd go adventure with them, I'm probably a first or second level monk anyway so me and old Sarion could be a tag team, but I have to finish off the monsters so I could get the XP, he's high enough level as it is. It would be a problem though with my devout Christian faith.

I actually had this happen to me - annoyed a DM early on and he dumped me as I was then (1980) at the back end of the orcs attacking the party (he really wanted to kill me off :D) THen he discovered I had 8 years of martial arts including weapons training and knew how to survive in the wild. After surviving that little start and managing to cummunicate with the party I joined them (1e 3L monk 1Lranger) been adventuring ever since as a ranger and wizard. Ended up visiting a number of worlds (several homebrew, IlEarth and finally Faerun.) Ended up killing Lolth (in a 1e adventure where its possible) marrying an elven princess gaining psionic wild talents, creating a realm of my own in two homebrew worlds, befreinding a dragon, and numerous other adventures. On reaching faerun I took over Teshendale and moved Bane's temple to the Citadel of the Raven.

Obviously the charater is epic level and used as an NPC in the world I run. When allowed to play me in some one else's campaign I have to cut out most of the experience developed by taking/controlling Teshendale. Still leaves me as an epic level character but not nearly as high (NPC: R17/Wiz15/Acm1 ; PC: R17/W9) still trying to find a wife/mate (hrm I never really checked is my dragon male or female wiht the rage a good baleful polymorph into elven form might get me a mate :D)

I would attempt to grab my huge stack of maps of Undermountain before being shot through planes and landing in the Realms. Then I'd head to Waterdeep, make copies, and get rich selling said copies to adventurers dumb enough to head down into Halaster's back yard.

After that, I'd become a cleric of Mystra, a wizard, and a mystic theurge, and head to Ashabenford in Mistledale to settle down, and look forward to serving the Lady of Mysteries in death.

What would you do?

Whimper and cry. A lot.

What would you do with that knowledge?

As little as possible. Unlike Elminster, the Seven, Khelben, or any of FR's gods, I don't believe in abusing my knowledge. I'd probably apply what I had to use to find a way home.

Who would you serve?

I might join the Church of Shaundakul, and do some serious travelling- home again, home again. I love y girlfriend to pieces, and I have to assume she wouldn't be with me. On a shallower note, I like my modern dental care, thank you very much.

Where would you go?

No real yen to pick any one location. Home is where the heart is.

Would you have a goal in mind?

Survive, and try to find a way home (Shaundakul, I reckon, could be a big help, there.), because after a few months without my girlfriend in the picture, I would go completely and utterly berserk.

If I were in the Realms, I would move somewhere peaceful and sell my services as a sage of some sort. I would also save up and buy at least a glass of that funky drow wine. That's pretty much it. Oh, and I would try to learn wizardry, and as I would not adventure, as it is much too dangerous, I would probably never rise in power beyond a first-level wizard. Here's what my stats would probably be:

Me: Male human Com1/Wiz1; CR 1; Medium Humanoid; HD 2d4; hp 5; Init +0; Spd 30 ft.; AC 9, touch 9, flat-footed 9; Base Atk +0; Grp +1; Atk +1 melee (1d6+1, club) or +0 ranged (1d10/19-20, heavy crossbow); Full Atk +1 melee (1d6+1, club) or +0 ranged (1d10/19-20, heavy crossbow); SA --; SQ --; AL CG; SV Fort +0, Ref +0, Will +3; Str 12, Dex 9, Con 11, Int 15, Wis 12, Cha 10.
Skills and Feats: Diplomacy +1, Knowledge (arcana) +5, Knowledge (Earth religion) +3, Knowledge (Earth geography) +3, Knowledge (Earth history) +3, Knowledge (Earth local) +3, Knowledge (mathematics) +10, Knowledge (science) +5, Knowledge (game info) +6, Perform (singing) +3, Speak Language (common), Swim +2; Education, Scribe Scroll, Skill Emphasis: Knowledge (mathematics).
Wizard Spells Prepared (3/2; save DC 12 + spell level): 0--light, prestidigitation (2); 1st--shield, protection from evil.
Spellbook: 0--all; 1st--charm person, mage armor, magic missle, protection from evil, shield.
Possessions: club, heavy crossbow, 10 bolts, potion of cure light wounds (1st level), scroll of mage armor, some gp.

I would not try to get back home, and I would donate heavily to Eldathian druids, with the understanding that as I approach old age, they will cast true reincarnation on me after I kill myself.
