| «hõ†šÞïkê18»12-21-05, 08:40 PM | I am just starting to DM and FR campaign, but there is a bit of a backstory. bear with me please. In my last (and first) game, my group of adventurers was ordered to destory Zhentil keep using what means we could. Since then, we've managed to rally several forces to our aide. My character brought his legion of 150 soldiers, another PC brought about 25 centaurs from his tribe, and our Paladin had managed to rally about 20 people from the people of Shadowdale (We generally began in Ashabenford). Later, through some shady activity, we managed to bring 4,000 troops out of Hillsfar to help us. One of our npc allies had also sent word that several mages were on the way from Elventree. Just before we began the grand siege, our DM quit on us...... Leaving me to take up the reigns. We only have one returning player and he'll be using a new character, we brought three new ones in as well. I planned to have them involved heavily, if not completely in this conflict we created. (After some discussioned, we deciding to have an evolving campaign world, once we did something, it stayed that way, even in other campaigns, so it's kind of a neat living campaign setting.) Yesterday, I recieved Lord of Darkness supplement as a gift and read through the Zhentarim Section. The stats for a level one fighter amazed me, 18 AC and 15 HP? This inevitably begs the question - Can 4,000 troops with siege equipment take down 2,000 Zhent soldiers barricaded in a castle. Also, how will the Zhentarim respond? I'd suspect that they'd send reinforcements from the Citadel of the Raven. But that's just a guess. So if you could help me out with the logistics here. The books at my disposal are the following- Magic of Faerun Faerun Campaign Setting Heroes of Battle DMG II Lords of Darkness PHB DMG 3.0 |
| Dargoth12-21-05, 08:57 PM | I think your players are in BIG trouble From the old 2ed FR adventures source book circa 1359-1367DR Zhentil Keep Armed Forces The Zhentilar 22,000 crack troops armoured in full plate and Bolstered by 16,000 mercenarys... Only around 5,000 reside in Zhentil keep itself. This means that even though this doesnt factor in Cyrics destruction of Zhentil Keep during 1360s it still means the most the Giant army could have killed was 5,000 out of 38,000 troops. In addition Fzoul is likely to recieve reinforcements from Mintar in the form of the Knights of Black Gauntlet. Of the 38,000 this does not include the Zhentarim Mages that Fzoul now commands as head of the Zhentarim or the Clerics of Bane Real world military thinking is that if your attacking a defended position then the attacker needs to have 3 times the number of troops the defender has to have any chance of winning the engagement |
| «hõ†šÞïkê18»12-21-05, 10:35 PM | Well, the one made in 2001 says that "Zhentil Keep currently has a garrison of about 2,000 troops and serves as the main base of the Zhent Navy." I think the Zhentarim membership is currently only 10,000 or so. Plus a large civil war could certainly wipe out a large number of members. (ie. Cyric vs. Bane) I was thinking that with some creative warfare, you could perhaps manage to take it out. Please, any help or comments are welcome, thanks for resoonding! |
| Dark Wizard12-21-05, 10:55 PM | I think 3e also reduced the population numbers for just about everything. Roughly by a factor of 10 in most places. |
| Mr.Moonrat12-22-05, 11:02 AM | For me it depends on the lvls. I am sure "only" about 50 epic lvl characters can be victorious if they attack Zhentil Keep together. But I doubt that about one million of lvl1 commoners can do it. |
| «hõ†šÞïkê18»12-22-05, 10:06 PM | Right, but were talking professional soldiers, not commoners. Along with the help of siege tools, centaurs, wizards, etc. And I'm sure that 2,000 is the correct number published in the book. But please, I still need some input. Thanks for the preceding comments, keep em coming guys. ;) |
| Chosen of Bane12-24-05, 11:47 PM | What level are the PC's? That is really what it comes down too. If they are not well into epic levels they will fail with those numbers. Fzoul himself, with a couple of well used summing spells could wipe out a huge portion of the opposing force. Not to mention Scyllua Darkhope an the rest of the gang. This seige would be suicide. If 4,000+ troops could wipe out Zhentil Keep I'm sure Hillsfar or Melvaunt would have wiped it out by now. |
| dragonheart12-27-05, 10:06 AM | sad but true - rebuilt Zhewntil keep is much weaker than it was before cyrics destruction of it in 1367-8. Luckily it has mulmaster as an ally and the citadel of the raven which allows it to withstand Hillsfar and Melvaunt (and others) while it rebuilds. given Fzoul's levels and resources I would say you need about 10,000 troops with at least a few hundred medium leveled (6-12) adventurers before you stand a reasonable chance of taking and razing the town. Even then don't be surprised if you can't destroy all buildings - things like Bane's temple, the city tower adn Manshoon's tower resisted everything the Giants and dragons could do and the Manshoon clonewars so they may not go down at all. In my campoaign the city was taken but that happened at the end of the giant seige when it was weakest. THe party doing it had about 20,000 troops/new citizens of Teshendale, was lead by an epic level ranger/mage and consisted of 24 characters level 7-15 along with 2 dragons. |
| «hõ†šÞïkê18»12-29-05, 06:47 PM | Alright, so it does seems like suicide, considering Fzoul could indeed wipe out half the army just by summoning his beholder allies. Anyway, what towns could the PC's draw from to get more allies? As far as the PC's getting involved, well, that's variable at this point. They'll be starting with no exp. So if they do do this, it'll take many many sidequests to get them to a decent level. I'm not sure I'll be doing this, since I'm a low experience DM, and they're new players mostly, I'd hate to ruin their first experience. But anyway, Melvaunt might help, and we could possibly get Thentia involved. But even so, I don't think there is enough resistance in the Moonsea to do it. I did notice that one the of outposts in Tethymar? had a warp gate (somthing like that) connection to the Keep. Perhaps we could exploit this somehow to make things easier? Any suggestions? |
| Blackheart12-29-05, 08:38 PM | I think you've already made the biggest suggestion to yourself. If you feel the least bit uncomfortable running it with your amount of DM experience, then don't do it. What will more than likely happen when you start is that you'll end up over yours and your player's heads and it will end up not being fun for anyone, more than likely. If you really want to do the Zhentil Keep thing, don't just toss it out the window. The Zhentarim employs everything from 1st level commoners to high level spellcasters and monsters, so run a normal campaign while using the Heroes of Battle stuff in small quantities, working it in so that all can get a better feel for the flavor it lends to the game. Start off at low level with small ecounters and good roleplaying opportunities while peppering with incentive for the PCs to loathe the Zhents or otherwise want what they have and slowly escalate the action. This will give you and your players the chance to familiarize yourselves with everyone else's styles within the game and to formulate a more realistic story and building arc for the climactic seige. Or you can ignore what I said and do what you want. It's D&D, so it's your game. |
| dragonheart12-30-05, 10:12 AM | blackheart's suggestions were very good - buy some time and build experience. As a new DM it will help you, as new players it will help them, for the story it will give you a much greater chance to succeed. figure Fzoul by himself is about CR22, the beholder allies are about the same, the forces from the Citadel of the raven are probably about CR20 and the forces Fzoul can bring from Mulmaster are also about CR20 so altogether about a CR28 force so you need to build yours up to about the same level as well - something between CR22 and CR30 so you have plenty of time to cover before the final assualt. Tethyamar is not in friendly hands so simply freeing it and getting access to that portal might be one of those side quests that buys time and builds experience. Remember Zhentil Keep will still be there when your ready to try and take it so don't feel rushed - build your experience and your player's pleasure in the game first. |
| The_Grand_Druid12-30-05, 03:28 PM | Hey there I'm curently running a simalar campain. I started the palyers out at fith lvl and they are now currently 17th lvl. most of the game play in between has been minor skrimishs with the zent and gathering forces from all over. Rember the Zent have lots of enemys and the enemy of my enemy is my freind. My group has allinces with the Red wizards, a local group of barbarians, some clerics of Tempest,Mystra,Helm, and Mask. Also they have a bout a 6,500 in merc. forces. Even with all this support and the level that they are ( 12 17th lvl Characters with more than half of them having high lvl cohorts.) they are still weary about trying to take the keep. So my advice is this, test the army. Set up a small skrimsh between the forces. I hardly doubt that the Zent would let a army roll up to the walls of the keep uncontested so that would be a perfect oppertunity to stage such a fight. Good luck |
| «hõ†šÞïkê18»12-30-05, 05:04 PM | Thanks for the responses. I think I'll take your advice on the smaller escalation, that seems much simpler. I thought I'd start out by having the PCs complete the Burning Plague quest found here. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20000801a) Though I might have to add another npc to keep them alive, but we'll see. I figure that I would tie the plague in as something that a Cleric of Bane had provided for the orc shaman to use. Let me know what you think. Anyway, I was thinking that the PCs could, in their early levels, work on taking down a cuthroat ship captain that has allied himself with the Zhents and is attacking Moonsea settlements. He's a fifth level Cleric/Fighter. I figure this presents a short term goal, and a boss figure they can kill to mark the end of the beginning, and if we so choose, then end of the campaign. What I mean is that if things go badly, we can end the campaign on a good note, or if it all goes well, we can keep going to tackle bigger and better things. Once again, let me know. I'd also like help brainstorming some possible allies to take the Keep down. I was under the impression the Red Wizards had a sort of uneasy peace with the Zhents? What would it take to coax them out of that? I figure the Church of Cyric would help, but it'd be more of a "here's a portal to the Keep, have fun." Seeing as how they'd probably kill some allies if you got too close. Anyone else they could call on? The Harpers perhaps? |
| The_Grand_Druid12-30-05, 05:25 PM | In Champions of Valor there is an orgnization of knights whose only purpos is to hinder the Zent. As for the motavations for the Red Wizards, they are opptunstic. If someone comes along and offers a better deal they would take it. What my party did was got them to belive that when, not if, the Zent was defeated all there allies would be next. So it was in the best intrests of the Red Wizards to comply. Granted they don't have the full support of the Red Wizards, but enough to make a differnce. About 25 Red Wizards and there Thayen Knights. Right now the group is negaotioning a joint force of red Wizards and the Barbarians of Rashmen, wich is getting really intresting. |
| The_Grand_Druid12-30-05, 07:37 PM | If your still worried about allies and working your way throught the burning plauge, try throwing a druid org. in. Have then help the players in staveing off the poisn in the well. And the Harpers wouldn't be bad but there picky about who they work with. The players might have to gain there trust first. On top of material wealth the Zent own a great deal of land. That could be an incentive to see the party come through. If some allies can't spare men rember it costs a lot to run an army so donations would be nice. If you want to sell your soul like my party is determaned to, there could a surprise from the underdark. Yup thats right a chaotic good Chr. made a deal with the drow. Theres noting that he won't do to see the end of the Zent. Its taking a good four mounths of to get this far, most of witch was spent in negoations with unsavory Chrs. |
| «hõ†šÞïkê18»12-30-05, 10:28 PM | Now this is very, very much experimental, but do you think that you could train for several weeks/months with your army and develop significant improvements? I think the Red Wizards would help only if victory is almost all but assured. I'm not sure (with the current resources anyway) that they would sign on at this point. But it's certianly an option. What do you think about getting the Church of Cyric, Harpers, Thentian Wizards, and Melvaunt on board? Do you think it's possible? If so, how do you think the Pc's should go about doing this? |
| The_Grand_Druid12-31-05, 11:55 AM | I diffently think that the chuch of cryic would help, but it would probally backstab the party somehow. As for the others, yeah they all sound like good choices. You should send me a pm and let me know how it goes. |
| «hõ†šÞïkê18»12-31-05, 02:05 PM | I will, thanks. For the church I was thinking along the lines of, "Hey evil cyric types, this portal leads into the Zhentil Keep barracks. Have fun!" sort of thing. Allowing for no oppotunity for major backstabbing. |
| The_Grand_Druid01-03-06, 10:30 PM | I wasn't aware that there was a portal in the zent keep barricks. Oh well. |
| «hõ†šÞïkê18»01-04-06, 03:16 PM | I believe it's only mentioned in the Lord of Darkness Supplement, it says the Zhents use portals to communicate and move troops around quickly. |
| The_Grand_Druid01-04-06, 08:13 PM | Oh I see. My group just found some new allies- a bunch a lizardfolk, it made for some really funnie gameplay but they came around to the view of the group. It keeps me wondering whos next? But anyway how long do you think a portal would stay open befor a zent wizard closes it? I'm thinking just long enough for the force that got inside to be cut off and then slaughtered. |
| «hõ†šÞïkê18»01-05-06, 09:14 PM | The portal can only be used once a tenday, but to close it, I believe they have to get to the other side. So you could (if you had sufficient forces) prevent it from being destroyed. Although, if they were angry enough, they may just launch at attack through it! |
| The_Grand_Druid01-06-06, 09:03 PM | Thats sounds like fun. I really hadn't thought of that. |
