Fears about GenCon 08 [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have a serious concern that might be a concern for others.

GenCon registration is coming up. Like, now. And that includes hotel, train, event registration, time-off from work, ect. There's a lot I have to get done and commit to before I can make it to GenCon. It's a very hectic time. With that in mind, I have some very big concerns about 4E, LFR, and my time over the next year.

Like, will I be going? Is there a reason for me to go? I know what most people will tell me. "GenCon isn't just about D&D." No...but it's damn close to being 50% of the convention. And if the major reason for going to the convention, for me, is to play games, I need to know I want to play them. Without character gen rules, campaign guidelines, or even a feel of how the game will be played, I can't commit money to it yet.

I understand that event registration won't be till March. But my hotel reservations and train tickets should be purchased now. I need more then "It'll be cool." to sway me into putting down money for a hotel room.

And this brings me to another concern. Judging. From what I've heard, current Master-level judges don't need to re-take the test to become master when 4E hits. That's fine. But what about learning the rules to be able to run these games for people during or after GenCon? Will GenCon only be judged by people that took the play test up in DDXP? And after that, how many new rules will there be for the new campaign? What will/won't be allowed? What will tracking be like?

I don't mean to sound ungrateful to the new regional admins. But I can't justify GenCon at this point without some serious answers to these questions. Not after DDXP, not during June when the books come out. I need them now. And I know of a group of people that also need these answers now.

So...I'm sorry for sounding like this...but will GenCon even be worth my commitment at this point?

I doubt anyone will be able to give you much more "concrete" information at this point.

The next "big announcement" for LFR - that of what FR regions will be used is coming at DDXP, as is the 4E preview. That's a month away. Other information will likely stem from there as well (likely a "rough sketch" of what LFR rules will be like) though, I doubt that there will be a "strict" LFRCS at that point (one can hope, however).

As for whether or not you'll enjoy 4E, there's no way of knowing that until the rules come out and you get a chance to sit and play a session. If you're unable to make it to DDXP, that too will come in June.

In my experience judging at the cons for the RPGA, it seems to me that most of the repeat judges are those who have not only passed their tests, but proven themselves to be able to make fair and consistent rulings at a table, even in areas where their rules knowledge may be weak.

Since we'll all be "green" to the new rules (judges and players alike) I'd expect that should a judge make a "bad call" because he doesn't know exactly how cleric power #101 works, the players at the table would be able to quickly point out the error, and the judge should (at worst) need to see the printed text of the rule before correcting himself and moving on.

In fact, I've seen that work now in 3.5. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if Dave (big con Senior GM for the RPGA) even gives judges a gentle reminder that, at GenCon we're all still "learning" the rules and to be "gentle" in their rulings.

If I were in your shoes, and depending on how flexible your work is, I'd schedule the time off from work - if you hear bad things out of DDXP you can (hopefully) cancel your vacation plans or schedule something else instead.

I'd hold off on booking flights/hotel if you can until after DDXP. While you may not have a hard and fast copy of the rules in your hands, there's going to be lots of us playing the 4E preview and talking to the people running LFR face-to-face.

If nothing else, that should help you get an idea of the general concensus for 4E and LFR from "real people".

Hope that helps at least a little.

The first half of the post is something nobody but you can answer. I don't know what you consider fun or not fun nor whether you'll lilke 4th edition or not (though I hope you do).

As to the second half all RPGA games at Gencon this year will be 4th edition. The books come out 10 weeks before the show so everybody should have plenty of time to get used to the new rules before the show. I have no worries that we'll have a great judging staff in place to handle everything.

As to needing to know how I cannot help you. Nobody can. You are not going to see official LFR rules till June or July. You're not going to see the entire D&D 4th edition rules till June (though lots of tidbits will go out at the end of this month).

You either have faith in the LFR staff and the RPGA or you don't. That's the only thing you can base any kind of decision on at this point.

Only you will be able to decide if you like 4E D&D and want to be there or not. Individual tastes are different.

I am confident that Dave will recruit judges who will prep. We may not all be totally expert on all parts of 4E rules, but I am sure we will do ok.

If you think you want to go to Gen Con, you should have already booked your room. If you wait for another month, you're going to be driving a long way to get to the con from your motel. The travel and parking time takes a toll over the course of a convention.

Personally, I'd make my reservations now and then cancel and eat the cancellation charge, if you decide not to go, but that may not be financially possible for you.

GenCon 2008 is the launch for LFR. If the RPGA doesn't pull out all of the stops for that, I don't know what they are going to pull them out for.

Wow. . . shows how "spoiled" I've become by just volunteering for the RPGA and letting them house me. :-/

I see that Gencon is starting their housing reservations already. . . so I guess you're right. Suppose I should check with my non-RPGA friends and make sure they're making their reservations. . .

All-in-all, I think you need to ask yourself what it is about D&D that has kept you playing over the weeks/ months/ years/ decades.

For me, it's a social event with some random geekitude tossed in. There have been rules elements that I didn't like in every edition since I started (oh for the 1980s!) but I - and many in my circles of players and friends - have been able to overlook those elements and focus on what we each enjoy.

Heck, I hated 2e wizards but a buddy of mine loved 'em. He hated melee combat, and I was a brawler. It worked out :)

I hope to see you at the show, OP. I have a great amount of faith that 4e LFR will be much more than what we're all expecting at this point!

I guess I'll just book my stuff. I just know that I brought a lot of friends with me to GenCon last year and they were all very disappointed by what happened. I mean, I was ready to judge a bunch of games, play the special, and I had my kobold cleric all ready to go. Then they basically shut us down. Before, I've never had a problem dropping the money on GenCon. I got there no matter what happened. Now...I'm seriously having to guess if it's going to be worth it this year. And I know I'm the only one that can tell me if 4e will be good...I just didn't want to have any more surprises...

Very disappointed about what that happened? who basically shut you down? I am trying to figure out what the problem was.

I think the OP is referring to the unexpected announcement of the end of the campaign. It did come rather suddenly and I can easily see how people excited about starting their 1st level kobold characters can get bummed about that news.

I don't think we're gonna get anything like that this year though (unless they announce LFR will be a 2 year campagin ;) ).

If kitsunecrystal's fear was driven by the 2007 announcement of the impending conclusion to LG, please realize that all campaigns will have some ending; it is just a matter of when. LG started in 2000 and will end in 2008; a 8-year run. While that might seem a bummer to new players who wanted to get in on a campaign coming to end, you just have to catch the next one.

LFR is starting at Gencon 2008. It is an indefinite life campaign, meaning the lifetime is not pre-set (not like the RPGA D&D Campaigns). It is highly unlikely that something will impact those plans. OK, a meteorite smacks into Renton, Wash, flattening WotC would probably do it. :weep:

If that was the basis of your concern, then I say, don't be concerned. Just don't wait 7-8 years to join LFR and miss out on all the fun in the meanwhile.

When in March considering events have just started being submitted. Event registration is usually in May. This is a shocker.

I hadn't heard this. Did you miss the Gen Con Chapter 11 bankruptcy press release? They may be moving up registration to bring money in earlier.

I was quoting Kitsunecrystal, the person that started this thread, that March was the month that event registration was going to begin. I figure they had some knowledge that the rest of us did not know. I believe event registration is still in May.

Well, it's already been decided for me that GenCon will not be happening. I was trying to stay on top of things and thought my brother reserved the hotel, when in actuality he did not...he lied because he didn't want to go this year. :( Yay. So now I'm cancelling a few friends requests and just not going. I wish I was, but without a hotel, it's not gonna happen.

Hotels are not that hard to get. About 2 months out you just start calling the 4 across the street once a week. Eventually the block lockout releases and you get a room. Just that easy. My buddy does it every year and stays across the street every year. Last year I know a guy who stayed in the same hotel the RPGA used and checked in that day.

Seconded.

I have some friends that drove up on Thursday last year, pulled in across the street and booked a room in person same day.

I'm sure they didn't get any discounted rates, but they were able to stay.
