Two adventures at DDXP:
http://www.consupport.com/events/events.asp?Type=562&View=Play

"Escape From Sembia" by Chris Tulach; and
"Scalegloom Hall" by Mike Mearls.

Alright so I'm dying to know. . . how are they LFR previews? Are they previewing the rules set we'll see in LFR? Are they set in 4E FR or are they set in 3.5 FR?

@Chris Tulach: Any further information on these adventures would be awesome!

Escape from Sembia by Chris Tulach
You weren’t looking for trouble in civilized lands… just some good adventuring leads. Before you knew what was really happening, you wound up in the middle of an information exchange, and now you have to escape from the lands of Sembia to preserve your very lives! Off the beaten path to shake any pursuers, you take to the wilds in the hope that you’ll reach a safe haven before you’re captured. 1st-level characters are provided. A D&D 4th Edition and Living Forgotten Realms preview adventure. (emphasis mine)

Seeing as these mods have "gimmie" characters, I'm working on the assumption that there will likely be a page or two with each character sheet/packet that explains "how <powerx> works now".

The events themselves are being run by WotC Staff and people currently playtesting 4E, so they'll be tutoring as well as running the mod.

I'd also take the over/under that these mods will be a bit less "intense" than your typical module, since they're there to give us a feel for 4E - thereby leaving a little more "tutorial" time.

The LFR part will probably just be the setting (FR) and a few teasers as to where they (core?) storylines might lead in the future.

Don't forget - the Dungeon Delve is ALSO 4E at DDXP - which is part of why the Delve has been bumped to 30 minutes instead of 20.

Of course, if Mr. Tulach or anyone else "in-the-know" wants to step in and show me where I'm wrong, and in how many ways, I'd be more than happy to be corrected.

1 - The LFR mods are set in Forgotten Realms.

2 - They use 4th edition rules (much like the campaign will)

3 - They will use pre-gen 1st level characters (as it's hard to make your own without the rules)

So there ya go. LFR preview events. I would not be surprised if they touch on plot elements lightly that might be in the kickoff mods next year (or they could just be one shot FR mods). Either way. Tickets for them are selling at a furious rate as we speak.

I guess what I'm really getting at, is are the adventures set in 4E Forgotten Realms or 3rd Ed?

Like, can we expect setting changes in these adventures that will be consistent with the highly controversial and top secret 4E FRCS?

You might just have to play them to find out.

Exactly I'm not answering that either.

I will say they are being written by two Wotc staff members. What you'll get you'll just have to show up and see or wait to hear it from somebody else.

Looks like I'll be waiting then. There aren't exactly a lot of blockbuster cons in Arkansas, and I'm saving my travel money/time off for Gencon. :P

Will these mods be available for ordering after DDXP for those of us that can't make it there? They'd certainly be a nice apetiser for my local groups.

With the judging at the con limited to WotC personnel and playtesters, I doubt the events will be available for ordering until the 4e rules come out in June (and maybe not then).

There were preview adventures written for 3.0 and Living Greyawk that was done. If they follow the same system they will be short scenarios with provided characters with all the information you need to run the short scenario. They will most likely not ever be available after the demo period. The 3.0/LG demo was originally only at Winter Fantasy but they did open a short period of demos later at regional conventions. Back then at the end of the scenario everything including the characters was collected and returned to WOTC. Not sure if they will be doing that this time. If I recall correctly they awarded certificates for 300 xp (or maybe 500xp) to players for doing the demo for their LG characters they would make later. Also not sure if they would do that again. Good Gaming!

The adventure was a killer adventure so no one survived we handed back our characters. I still have the cert and it is for 500 xp.

Wolfstar76 and Wavester pretty much summed up what you'll get.

These adventures will be set in the Realms. They will use 4th Edition rules. They will be more about experiencing 4th Edition than experiencing all the changes in the Realms (you'll get more of that when you start playing the regional adventures later this year). They may have a slight connection with future Living Forgotten Realms adventures. They are not designed to be "killer adventures", but to provide a fun time; however, there are some serious challenges in them.

You should expect to be spending the first 45 minutes to an hour selecting characters, reviewing the sheets, and getting a breakdown on the major changes with 4th Edition. After that, it's game on!

Hey Chris,

My huge-big question is... will these modules be playable at Gen Con Oz later in the year for us convicts over the Pacific? :D

Similarly, any chance of a European site for these modules?

Well by June 4th edition is out and August is the campaign kick-off so the need for the preview events should be zero by that time. Before that the pool of people who are actually allowed and able to run them is so small it will probably be pretty hard to run them elsewhere (but here's hoping)

It is possible that we might provide the preview adventures to targeted shows outside the US. However, there needs to be enough staff to run the games, which is the big issue.

We can arrange people to eat the modules if that's going to be a problem. IE: This will not be a problem. :) PLEASE let us have the modules!
Madfox11

Eating the module is not the point. To run the adventure you need to know the 4E rules and that requires signing the proper NDAs and all that kind of paper work.

To be more specific, assuming that you cannot convince the WotC staff members to be your GMs, you would most likely need to see if the LFR admins are available to judge for you at your con. Ask those in your region. (Claire said she could be persuaded with airline ticket and hotel.) :D I don't know if 4E playtesters are acceptable or not. Chris would have to answer that.

I know at least one LFR admin is going to be at Gen Con Oz, and almost certainly two. Maybe three.

Please! Let us play these mods! :'(

4th edition releases in June. Gen Con Oz is in early July. Why is this a problem?

I imagine Pieter was addressing the proposal of any convention, not just Gen Con Oz offering the previews.

Gen Con Australia won't be a problem. It's in July.

The bigger concern is Gen Con France, since it's before the 4E rules hit the shelves (and the number of European members that have seen 4E rules is smaller than the US members). We're working on that.

Once June 6th has come and gone, this will be much easier, since anyone will be eligible to DM a 4th Edition adventure.

So does this mean we can play the preview adventures?

Yes, I realise that the rules themselves will be out then- but it would still be nice to play them. They are, after all, still a LFR preview!

C'mon mate! Don't make me threaten to bribe you with a kobold plushie!

But will it be Con only?? Can they be released like the Greyhawk intros or something through some channel for those that don't have a con to go to until like November?

The first true LFR adventures premier at IndyGenCon 2008 and those will be available for home games before November 2008 ;)
