Now with the book finally out, I wanted to start a thread for those who have read it or don't plan to, to discuss the Realms changiong events, as well as the potention impact on LFR. WARNING - This thread will likely and intentionally contain spoilers for the book |
| Keith5311-04-07, 08:01 PM | I have thought about the Orc King since reading it, and to my mind, the most significant take-away I saw was the fairly blunt notice that Orcs in the Forgotten Realms (or at least some orcs in that region) can be and will become much more neutral and can and will co-exist with more traditional realms. I don't know if it was meant as a signal that orc PCs will be allowed in 4E or 4E FR, or just that orcs should not be assumed automatically to be Evil and killed on sight. (I daresay that will not sit well with every gamer.) Do others have a similar interpretation or a different one? Keith |

| Vamroc11-05-07, 02:58 PM | Yes actions make the man so what if your a vampire here in America we hate rats while in India killing them is crime. Lots of people are turned in to vampires against their will why should they stop being who they were in life. Obviously when you die you loose a level but should you have the option it would be better than shelling out five K for a raise dead. If you were what ever your race is than every player that picks the Elf would be Chaotic Dick. |
| Keith5311-05-07, 08:38 PM | If 4E tosses out alignment totally, then a radical change occurs to the game. If a creature who turns into a vampire could be any alignment (i.e., behave good, neutral or evil), as versus is turned to evil, then there are major implications, more than just what race your PC can be. Rather than define a set of species (races) as inherently Evil which can be attacked & slain on sight (and treasure looted), it becomes more like a real world crime investigation -- who dun it? or catch them in the act. Even beyond that, a society might confront a moral question, should you kill a killer (kidnapper, thief, etc.) out of hand, OR give them a chance to change/repent/etc. My gut tells me that the D&D designers won't take the game that far. But they could simplify/change the alignment designation system. YMMV. Keith |
| Grimslade200111-06-07, 09:05 PM | Alignment is going away from the mechanics side of things. Mike Mearl's , when asked about alignment said, "That's a story item, I deal with mechanics." What does this mean? Detect (Alignment), Protection from (Alignment) and Holy Word sort of spells will be different. Detect Undead, Protection from Demons, and others will replace the alignment spells. That way a paladin who champions the destruction of orcs doesn't care if the orc is a lawful good cleric of Ilmater, he just uses his Smite Orc power and goes to work. |
| delewobmesid11-09-07, 11:11 AM | I wouldn't be surprised if one of the first adventures would be to help maintane the peace between the two kingdoms (some one powerful is getting framed, that sort of thing, hunt down some trouble makers). I'm more concerned about this 'Spell pague' as I almost always play casters... |
