Ok, so at GENCON UK, the marketeers for Wotc confirmed there would be a 5th edition, and would only be drawn on product life cycle (i'm a marketeer) on the basis of comparing 3e 3.5 and 4e, roughly 4/5 years apart.

So looking forward and assuming this is what wil continue, how do we see FR changing for 5th ed?

Personally, I like a planar hole through Hellgate keep where everyone has to battle the hordes of hell to keep Faerun safe, more than enough concept to retcon whatever you want lol ;)

I would preffer some freak time event that returns everything to 1374 DR, invalidating that awfull retcon that is 4ed FR.

If this is true, I see several problems. The main one being : who do they expect will pay another $100 plus for another new edition? I'm not going to buy 4e, and I sure as hells wouldn't buy 5e 5 years from now.

Chronomancy's what I want to see. A wee jump back in time to, say 1372. And then make the designers think about what they're gonna do, and not base it on novels.

But 5 years? It was, what... 8 years for 3-3.5.

-I just think it's pretty amazing that, before 4e is even released, they are already talking about 5e. Why not just skip from 3e to 5e, and call it a day?

People who are newer to the hobby. Of course they expect to lose customers along the way, partly because those customers will be satisfied with the books they already have and won't want to buy more product, which is exactly why WotC is keen on bringing in new customers.

Not sticking up for WotC, just telling it like it is.

As for the question of how will FR change for 5th edition? WAAAAAY too early to tell! We haven't even seen the full scope of 4th edition changes yet.

Because they don't know at this point what the next edition will be like, only that it will inevitably come as long as D&D is still around. :) Edition changes are very much a part of the way the company works as far as I can tell--in my opinion they are just being honest by saying that somewhere along the line, there will be another one.

-Of course. Just wait until 4e actually debuts, however, before waxing poetic about what 5e will be!

Yeah. Wizards just pretty much confirmed that I'll be skipping an edition completely. Who the hell wants to re-learn the rules every five years?

That's insane. It really is enough to make me leave the hobby behind, if not for the fact that I love my world and my players would all throttle me.

What happened to the days when roleplaying mattered? Converting old PC's over to the new edition as time goes on gets more and more cumbersome as there are more and more of them.

This level of greed and stupidity wouldn't be necessary if Wizards would just focus on quality products and proper playtesting.

Wizards had the right idea with the large and greater miniatures. They could have made money off that forever, because the sculpting on the medium figures is terrible. But making it a separate line was a mistake. At 8 bucks or so for an individual piece, they would have cornered minis above medium size. (Yeah, larger pieces cost more, I'm not dumb) For medium and smaller creatures, nothing beats a pewter mold.

Five years=New edition? I don't find this particularly amusing and or entertaining.

Did they say that they had already planned stuff out for 5th edition? If so, then yeah, I agree that there's no need to go blabbing about it...and if it's so great, put it in the edition that will be coming out this May.

Heya,

This level of greed and stupidity wouldn't be necessary if Wizards would just focus on quality products and proper playtesting.

Companies are there to make a profit. They answer to their shareholders, and if they don't make a profit - companies don't last long. So for every business, there is a bottom line. While it is true that sometimes companies don't seem to act in our best interest, they don't do so out of malice or greed. The idea that wanting to make a profit is greedy is pretty silly - of course they want to make a profit. Money is what makes the world go around.

Keeping that in mind, realize there's only a finite number of books and accessories that a company producing a Role Playing Game can make before the quality of the products starts to deteriorate, and we end up getting more and more detritus. The game system becomes bloated under the load of books, and new players are put off by the complexity of the game system and its accessories. Wizards know this, and that is why they produce a new edition every so often, so new players have an entry point (most game companies do this - look at Steve Jackson Games - they're already at 4th Edition GURPS). Older players don't necessarily need to invest in the newer system, because they have the books from the previous edition. Adding this to the mix, you can understand why they need to occasionally reach out to newer players, because without newer players coming into the hobby, they may as well close up shop and stop producing games all together.

However, having said all that, I think they could have changed over editions without throwing the older players under a bus with regards to the Realms.

Blaming a business for wanting to make a profit is pretty short sighted, IMHO, because that's what businesses do.

-Well, you really can't think ahead without knowing in advance something that you are going to be changing. Especially so soon, methinks.

There will probably be a 5e D&D, but I doubt there'll be a 5e FR.

And for the same reasons, there won't be a 6e D&D. ;)

By then we'll all have wires plugged into our heads enjoying virtual reality settings, and the 'kiddies' will be talking about those 'old school' video games their Grandpas used to play....

Grandpa: "Yeah, those were the day's boy! Why, I'll never forget the first time I had my way with a prostitute at knife point while playing Grand Theft Auto... Ahh... those were the days. Then I met your Grandmother."

I would play D&D VR. Yes, yes I would.

I would too, except for the naked Firbolg dancing. That's just nasty.

Unwashed giants stomping about the wilderness in their lack of undergarments.

The only thing worse would be naked Formorian Dancing. There's something to get seriously unexcited about.

OMG, ok, have they gone insane????? Already talking about 5e, I really don't know WTF is going on with them.

It's final, I have to support 4e because I don't want another edition change and I really don't have the time to help maintain an underground FR setting.

I would have to answer that with a definate "YES!".

My question

'So can you confirm there will be a 5th Edition and if so when?'

Response

'We've only just finished 4e,so we aren't looking at 5th yet, but yes there will be a 5th edition in the future.'

They has earlier mentioned under the 4th ed piece as to the timing with regards to product cycles, so I have made the assumption as I stated that it would be about 5 years.

BTW, I don't have a problem with new editions, providing they are compatible with previous ones to the extent that the rules might get tweaked or something slightly changed. See Legend of the Five Rings as an example, 3rd edition in 10 years, but the mythos etc still the same and still able to work round the rules changes.
