How to become immortal by magic ways ?

I'm thinking of being a lich (I play an evil wizard) in an evil group. A new interesting experience.

But my DM won't agree, I think.:(

What are the other ways, you know ? Except divine ways.

I know. The power corrupts, my lord.
You know that better than me for trying to become a God by magical ways.

Perhaps dealing with demons is another but very dangerous way.

-You could also keep on drinking Potions of Longetivity.

-Puting yourself in stasis would also work, though it doesn't sound very fun.

Perhaps a longevity spell, by the way of necromancy. Blood of others for my own life.

Or an energy drain from other creatures.

Become an Elan. But you'll have to start all over again.

Well the "easiest" way to gain immortality is to catch a bit of vampireism, course you'll want your friends to quickly end the vamp that turned you so you dont have to spend a few centuries as its slave.
Downsides include aversion to running water, no reflection, sunlight turns you into dandruff and a tendancy to speak with a heavy east-european accent and ending sentences with the word "bleeh".

Next to that theres Lichdom, most of the perks of vampireism without all the downsides, course as Order of the Stick: Start of Darkness showcases you'll miss your sense of taste and some...ahem...fleshy bits:D

Other option is the Nicolas Flamel method, which involves drinking magic potions to stay the touch of time, in this case potions of longevity, course the cost of these really do start to add up after a while and you'll be in trouble if the source starts to dry up.

Absorbing the lifeforce of others to sustain your own is a time honored method of morally questionable individuals, but it tends to attract attention from the people who look down on that sort of thing.
Most of them will be relatives or friends of your former life sources, those vengance quests are a killer.

Supposedly the best way of becomming immortal is to have a greater power (read: diety) bestow it upon you. This of course takes alot of doing to accomplish but once you get there you'll be set for eternity, or til the next multi-novel edition updateing story arc comes along, then you might get erased from reality, or risen to the greatest peak of power, it could go either way :)

Good luck on your quest for never ending life, just remember once you get it to get lots of hobbies, or at least focus one one at a time and then switch once you know all there is to know about it. Whenever I hear or read about some vamp, lich or whateva complaining eternal life is boring I think "man theres a guy with a very limited imagination".

This is a fairly comprehensive list of the various methods of achieving immortality in D&D.

Most assesable magical Methed?

Using the "Majic Jar" spell or other methods to posses bodies then using a polymorph self to look like you (or can take over other person's life if like)

Older Methods"

Using a greater Potion of Youth that you can eventuall overload up on and eventually become immortal.

Odd Methods:

Making a deal with a Deep Spawn to eat you (in not a nice way)

Transfering consiousness into a Magical vessle like a Sword or Gem or Golem/automation

Of Course the average Necromancer would say to become undead, but that can be unattractive unless you want your PC to be a seductive hot big tatahed vampiress that looks like a china doll in complection....but Magic Jar, Possesion of other bodies and objects also deals with lifeforce issues which is the real basis of Necromancy as in world that allow mages to cast Healing Magic it is classifies as "Necormancy" to heal the and Resurect the dead as well as animating dead bodies and aspects Necromancy actually creates the artificial lifeforce and intelegence that can occupy magic items or even make a "artifical soul" (Which is more alchemy then Necromancy, but you get my drift)

Personal Favorite Way to make "Immortals"?

1) The PC learns to cast magic that feeds off of the Spirit and Soul including specialize spells that uses experience and Constitution to create Soul Magic and Spirit magic Effects via Power points (PP)

2) PC creates a "soulgem" by casting the Spell of the same name on a object to contain the SOul via spending the PP to do so (it's a 8th Level Spell called "Create Soul Gem"...duh)

3) PC expends the 50 permanent PP to move his.her Soul into the "Soulgem" effectively making the vessle indestructable (short of being dipped simutanousely in the fires of creation and armegedon simutanoiusly) and the occupant immortal unless they are foolish enough to use up all of their permanent Soul PP (Experience) which will make them irrovokably dead and the Soulgem explodes with enough force to destroy everything for 1/4 a mile (much like how Bane and whatshisface exploded in the "Time of Troubles once they expended their permanent Soul PPs fighting). The essence of the Gemlord is immune to magic though subject to mental attacks via psionics and to the power attacks of creatures who use power attacks like other Gemlords and Immortals (gods)

4) After the Soulgem is occupied the PC can expend 50 temporary Soul PP to use the "Soulbulb" effect and direct as little or as much Experience into the buld that can travel anywhere and will be tethered to the "soulgem" by a silvery cord, that if is cut the soulbulb is lost but the feedback and memories and any experience trasfered back to the gem before the buldb is severed is not. a Soul bulb can move 24 miles a round and travel to any dimension or plane in the multiverse though Plane hooping costs 5 soul pp per use. A Gemlord's soul bulb is like the Gemlord in that it can only expend soul pp as spiritual pps rely on a occupied body's
constitution. The free soulbub, like the gemlord's central essence, is immune to physical attacks and magical attacks and only can be harmed by mental attacks or power attacks of other gemlords or immortals using power attacks

5) Using the "Soulbulb", which a "Gemlord" can make up to his/her intelegence level to make "multiple Avatars", the "Gemlord" can reposses his/her old body at no cost but "soulbumping" and "Possesion" are 50 temporary Soul PPs each both have their limitations. The Living target of a "Soulbump" gets a save against Death magic and if failed the former owner of the body is "gone" to whatever afterlife (if any) and only the body being killed and/or the "Gemlord" vacating the body before the maximum ressurection time can bring the old soul/spirit back. Possesion can only be done on intact dead bodies or inanimate objects and the body or inanimate object saves against magic cast by the soul bulbs experience Level and if failed the body is not possessed cause it can't contain the soul bulb at it's current experience level (an try lowering experience and expending other 50 temp soul PP). An inanimate Object is destroyed if the spell is failed and even if successful their can be mobility problems and coordination problems by the possesor.

6) A "Gemlord" can also Spend 50pp permanently to make a standard body like the one he/she used to have with no extra cost to change age or minor features. Creating a bigger body like a Giant would be 100pp and something like a Dragon is along the 200pp-500pp mark depending on size. the bodies can then be possessed for free. Any body can be made either biologically and anatomically correct or can be a more "durable" form

7) "Gemlord" gems are indestructable cause of the lifeforce within and can be carried around by an Avatar of it's owner though it is usually stashed in some hideaway or even among Dragon Treasure (sometimes with the Dragon being a possessed Avatar) and while some "gemlords" might bestow gifts or preform some service to the possor of a "Gemlords" gem/vessle It should be noted that Gemloards can cast mortal spells at Twice there level in PP (Fireball would cost temporary Soul pp of 6 pp 3 levels x2pp) and other PP effects include "Slam" (5pp), "Push"(5pp), "Wrap"(5pp), "Levetate"(3pp), Telekinises (3pp)....and of course "Soulbump" (50pp). In combat with other Gemlords or Immortals the "Slam" and "Push" power attacks would deduct 40pp permanently from the enemy if they don't make their save v.s. Power attack (same as Death Magic)

8) When in a body the "Gemlord" can expend Spirital pp instead of Soul PP. 10,000 experince points = 1 soul PP and 10pp = 1 Constitution point of the body being used.

9) All the stats of Creatures can be attacked and Drained by the "Drain" power of a "Gemlord" which is 5pp per attack. If the target doesn't save v.s. Death Magic the "Gemlord" can add the attacked stat and the stat is drained from the target (only 1 point of a statis drained per attack, except for HIt points which is 1d50) can be added to the Avatar or to the "soul gem" note that the "soulgem" only has Charisma, Intelegence,Wisdom,Willpower, and Expereice as Constitution and Hitpoints are mater of "Body and Spirit". The "Gemlord" can also transfer stats freely between Avatars and the "soulgem" which is useful if the "Gemlord" just found a recently dead Dragon to possess (instant experience and stats to reap). If attacking experience/pp the gain is 10pp against other gemlords or immortals, or 100,000 experience from a mortal (which could kill a low lever creature quickly)

10) Spiritual pp Empowered effects ans Spells can effect the Avatars and beings of up to lower god status (after bypassing protections, saves and Anti-magic of course) and Soul pp empowered effects and Spells can effect the Avatars and beings of up to "Overgod"and "Ancient One" status after bypassing antimagic, resistances, protections, etc(Though neither Gemlords nor Overgods and such would likely ever cross paths let alone have a reason to fight)

As a beng that can either be reclusive and alloof as the most secluded Wizard or very integrated in the multiple lives that it can be involved in a "Gemlord" is rarely ever hasty to fight just for fighting sakes (e.g. the Farmer it possesed has 3 children and a wife to go back to....the Children are tachnically the "gemlords", or if the Avatar Sage/Monk in Candlekeep is killed the access to the books will be lost.etc)

Special notes:

1) Gemlords can cast any spell effect whether Psionic, clerical, or magical via expending Spiritual or soul PP 2x the level of the spell or in the case of Psionics the pp equal to the initial cost of starting a Psionic effect (Note that the Gemlord need to learn the Spell or Psionic effect before it can use it via researching)

2) Gemlords can actually give spells to followers or allies by expending 5pp for the "grant Spell" effect then the pp for the Spell or effect to be granted. the Being Granted the Spell casts it at their Class Level if they have enough levels of the type that the spell is cast from, or at the minimum Level required to cast the spell if they are not of the class type that uses the spell/effect

3) Though not "gods", a Strange side effect of cannibilizing the "divine spark" to create Immortality allows the Gemlord to use the friends and allies "belief" and "love" and "faith" in the Gemlord's person as extra PP. Known as Faitheral pp it is equal to 10x the constitution of the "believer" in Power points.

4) Furthermore a "believer" in the Gemlords Soul and Spirit is accessable to the gemlord in the form of Spiritual and Soul pp that can be accessed for temporary or permanent use just like the Gemlord's own soul and body being occupied (and with this it isn't unusual for a Gemlord to "grant Spell" to a follower using the pp from the follower's faitheral and soul/spirit pool)

5) While the "Possesion" effect will cure minor wounds, a body that has reached it's maximum age limit or a creature that died from some sort of physical ailment (like the heart being eaten out by worms or the Black Plague) is not possesable and attempts to posses the body will fail.

6) Creating Monsters for servants cost 20 permanent pp and they are sentinent and optionally free willed and able to reproduce. Of course it is a effect that the Gemlord must research to learn.

Become a big brain like Iouluam.

Or you could just get a hold of Iouluam's Longevity from Tabra... ;)

Live forever by sucking out everyone else's life.

One spell. Steal life.

It is the best, and easiest method for any non-good wizard to achieve the desired state of immortality.

Spend 10 GP, buy a haggard looking goblin slave, prepare the spell two or three times in case of a lucky roll. Alternatively, have scrolls.

Once a year on the night of a full moon cast the spell. BAM, you gain the year back and then some. Simple as pie.

Durned shame no one ever suggests this but me.

I didn't think time stopped on the astral, I was under the impression that something along the lines of 1 year there, was around 1000 years on the prime.

I'll admit it's been awhile since I looked into the astral.

At least one prestige class gives immortality: Green Star Adept (Complete Arcane). Or get somehow the dragon type and become an dragon ascendant lvl 12. The last ist my way I walk just now... ;)

You Could Always use the Crown of Horns Method.

Place you Essence into an Item such as a circlet or ring.
when some poor smuck puts it on you get a new body.

For a fun Example see Karla The Grey Witch from Record of Lodoss war.

For those not concerned about vanity, the latter of this previous post works. Swap souls with another when you reach an undesirable age, and tada, young again.

Just don't leave

Draw back on never leaving the Astral Plane is that the "Nippers" might find you

If you never heard of them they are a swarm of insects that look like centipedes but only 1/4 inch long and they like to bury their swarm of 100 or so into warm fleshy bodies to reproduce with the damage being 1 Hitpoint per "nipper" before it gives birth to 1d10 "nippers" who feed and cause 1 hitpoint damage in the following round before reaching maturity then reproducing on the following round.

The damage is so extensive that godling types usually just abandon their material bodies lest their actual essence gets drained

But since the Astral Plane is so big it could be a hundred lifetimes before you are unfortunate to be found by a NIpper Swarm

Well FR does have its own representative in the "place essence in a decoration" club: Myrkul, former god of death who now sits back (so to speak) and lets whoever places the crown on his head do the heavy lifting.
Got to hand it to Myrkul, he found a way to take a vacation from godhood AND avoid destruction all in one :) .
