| The_Shaman02-09-07, 07:07 PM | Hi, I was - and remain - a fan of the more "personalized" divine spellcasting that seemed to exist in earlier versions, and had the pet idea of reconverting the divine spells into old spheres (from 2nd edition), so as to prevent ideas like a cleric of Lliira casting destruction and have clerics be at least slighly different depending on their mythos. This is a work in progress, and if you think that it's senseless I will discontinue it. On the other hand, I hope that you will help me consider a variant for divine spellcasters that will make them easier to play. So far I only have covered the cleric spells of up to lvl 6 from the PHB. I'm not sure how to treat the domains in 3.0 in order to allow greater versatility, but perhaps this will come with dealing with the druids, rangers, and paladins. I thank you in advance for your patience and - hopefully - cooperation. *: requires a certain class feature, such as animal companion, mount, favored enemy, etc. **: a domain spell or spell that should be beyond the usual sphere allowance for the spellcasters it was allowed for. |
| The_Shaman02-09-07, 07:12 PM | Reserved for druidic spellcasting - elemental spells are usu. 1 level lower for druids - healing spells are 1+ level higher - whenever possible, use the handbook to determine levels |
| The_Shaman02-09-07, 07:15 PM | Reserved for paladin spellcasting |
| The_Shaman02-09-07, 07:17 PM | Reserved for ranger spellcasting - similar to druid - Plant, Elemental spells at -1 level - Healing spells at +1 lvl |
| Cthulhu02-10-07, 01:25 PM | Why would you need to create spheres for druids, rangers, and paladins? In the original all divine spells were categorized into spheres that all classes accessed. You didn't have a seperate list of spheres for druid spells or ranger spells. A nature cleric used the same Plant sphere as a Druid or a Ranger. :) Just trying to save you some work! |
| The_Shaman02-10-07, 07:35 PM | Yeah, but I'm not sure how it'd work with spells that were different levels for different classes (I think there were a few) or typical spells like holy sword. I may group them all together in the end, mind you. |
| Azar_of_Faerun02-12-07, 02:16 AM | Not a big fan of this. I like the current freedom of the spell system Clerics have, and if you so desire for your character to roleplay aspects of his piety, just change your spell list to suit this. |
| The_Shaman02-16-07, 07:29 PM | Bump! Druids done. |
| GothicDan02-17-07, 09:04 AM | I loved the Sphere system and am all for making each deity more specialized/personalized in the spells he grants his clergy. |
| MerrikCale02-17-07, 09:10 AM | I loved the Sphere system and am all for making each deity more specialized/personalized in the spells he grants his clergy. I agree with GD. It makes logically sense that each deity would grants certain spells for their followers only. They have don't this only partly with "domains" but the spheres are a whole different class of "personalization". Nice work by the way Shaman. |
| The_Shaman02-17-07, 04:11 PM | Thank you. By the way, I'm a bit unsure about a few typically paladin or ranger spells, such as holy sword or exacting shot. Would it be acceptable that two new spheres (say, hunter and champion) be introduced for such spells? I think that a cleric of lvl 7 is not mean to be able to cast Holy Sword and end up with a +7 weapon, imo. |
| Stigger02-17-07, 08:32 PM | Always figured that the spell specialization could be accomplished more easily through altering Initiate feats a bit to make them more like the 2e specialist priests. But I never really did care for the spheres all that much, greatly preferring the domain system. |
| The_Shaman03-03-07, 08:33 PM | Bump... anyone still interested in the project? |
| The_Shaman03-22-07, 09:35 PM | Bump |
| Hawkfeather03-23-07, 04:36 PM | Bump... anyone still interested in the project? Well, I am. Just like GD and Merrik Cale, I prefer the old spheres system. The lack of priest "personalization" annoy me (I am a huge fan of the 2nd edition's specialty priests; I know they were a "little" bit overpowered, but they had style). Just let me make a suggestion: I my opinion, the spheres shoud be more equivalent in number of spells. But I don't know if this can be done, since most spells clearly "belongs" to a certain sphere. |
| The_Shaman03-23-07, 10:16 PM | I suppose it can happen if we include some of the domain spells in the spheres, too. It would still be somewhat unequal, but I don't think they were equal to begin with. I'm worried about some paladin and ranger spells, though. Giving clerics Holy Sword at lvl 7 may be a bit too much, unless it's something like a lvl 6+ spell for them. |
| The_Shaman12-23-07, 07:48 PM | Bump. Complete Divine spells have been added. |
| Green Elven Vampire12-23-07, 07:54 PM | Always figured that the spell specialization could be accomplished more easily through altering Initiate feats a bit to make them more like the 2e specialist priests. But I never really did care for the spheres all that much, greatly preferring the domain system. I'm with you on this. Just alter the Initiate feats and you're there. I took the Initiate of Silvanus feat and vamped it into a Initiate of Rillifane Rallathil feat. |
| The_Shaman12-24-07, 09:56 AM | By the way, as a way to differentiate the class lists a little better, should the summon monster line be moved or duplicated in the astral sphere? After all, it deals with transdimensional calling, unlike the Summon Nature's Ally line. |
| msatran12-24-07, 10:01 AM | The only sphere I want in my D+D game is the Sphere of Annihilation that consumes 4th edition and everything about it. |
| Lord Karsus12-26-07, 07:25 AM | Not a big fan of this. I like the current freedom of the spell system Clerics have, and if you so desire for your character to roleplay aspects of his piety, just change your spell list to suit this. -But, why would a deity who prefers to work "quietly", such as, say, Mask, grant his followers the spell "Big, Bag, Loud Explosions"? For a special purpose, sure, but, as an everyday kinda thing...? |
| Rauric12-26-07, 08:09 AM | What angered me with 3.5 was their were NOOOOOO PRCs for Mask, and NOOOOOO Initiate Feats. We got Initiate Feats for every other god and their mother (PRCs too) but none for Mask. Just a personal hatred thing going on with me and 3.5 for that. Carry on. ;) |
| Lord Karsus12-26-07, 08:49 AM | What angered me with 3.5 was their were NOOOOOO PRCs for Mask, and NOOOOOO Initiate Feats. We got Initiate Feats for every other god and their mother (PRCs too) but none for Mask. Just a personal hatred thing going on with me and 3.5 for that. Carry on. ;) -Every other deity!? The entire Seldarine was skipped over! |
| The_Shaman12-26-07, 11:20 AM | Most non-standard pantheons got snubbed, iirc. It's true that elves got hit the worst feat-wise, but there weren't many PrCs for the dwarven or halfling pantheon, either. |
| Rauric12-27-07, 09:35 AM | I just figured since Talos, Shar, Mystra were given feats that Mask should have had a writeup as well. I think Nature deities got one so it was always just a pet peeve. |
| Stigger12-27-07, 09:36 AM | Mask are crap, so no love for him. |
| Lord Karsus12-27-07, 01:45 PM | Mask are crap, so no love for him. -He is certainly very prominent in a lot of relative recent events (Time of Troubles, the Shadow Storm, the Sojourner). |
| Stigger12-27-07, 06:59 PM | Nah, he's still are crap. Brandobaris FTW. |
| The_Shaman12-27-07, 08:45 PM | I don't know, I could never take the racial pantheons that seriously. I like Mask, myself - one of my favourite evil deities. I hope he'd accidentally find his swords in Cyric's back one day soon. Anyway, I'm thinking of doing CAdv as well. I'm a little split about the lorecall spells though... Should they be divinations? animal-based? combat? I'm leaning towards the first, to be honest. |
| Lord Karsus12-28-07, 02:07 AM | I don't know, I could never take the racial pantheons that seriously. -What's so hard to believe about them, taking them in context with what they are, and everything? |
| The_Shaman12-28-07, 04:54 AM | What I meant is that I always imagined them with rather limited following, mostly among the respective race. The common deities, on the other hand, supposedly have a wider appeal and more adherents. |
| Stigger12-28-07, 06:41 AM | I've had a few human PCs go with Brandobaris actually... great god for goodly rogues. |
| Lord Karsus12-28-07, 06:52 AM | What I meant is that I always imagined them with rather limited following, mostly among the respective race. -Well, that's why they are racial deities! :P -Why would...a Thri-Keen want to worship Gruumsh, the Orc-Father- who preaches the racial superiority of Orcs, and the inferiority of everything else- when, say, generic ol' Talos is around as well. |
| Rauric12-29-07, 08:02 AM | I don't know, I could never take the racial pantheons that seriously. I like Mask, myself - one of my favourite evil deities. I hope he'd accidentally find his swords in Cyric's back one day soon. Mask was an evil deity I could see lots of folks getting behind, even nonevil folks. Plus when you die you don't get stuck with a total Butthead for a boss. Sure he is tricky and lies to ya and is deceptive, but he won't whip ya or make ya hang with spiders OR talk about Loss all day long and depress the hell outta ya. He just wants you to steal and give him his share. Not too shabby of a deal if that is what ya did in the living world. I hope after Kemp's novels he steals Intrigue and Illusion back from Cyric so he can match up with Shar. At least steal intrigue by showing that he was hiding Leira the whole time to screw with Cyric. Then SHE can reclaim the Illusion title and Mask can work with her, or be her boss and she can be his saint or lesser power or somesuch. |
| Stigger12-29-07, 02:11 PM | Now that's an interesting idea with Mask and Leira Rauric... gotta think about that and maybe swipe it from you at some point. :D |
| Rauric12-29-07, 10:43 PM | No problemo. I am a huge Mask fan. He might have been behind Mystra's death as well. Maybe he manipulated Shar somehow into using Cyric. Perhaps their evil act will cause them so much turmoil that Mask can slip in and get what he wants from them? |
