Or is each spell scribed in the weave with its exact components? Example of a situtation: A boy, born mute, is eager to learn the ways of a wizard. Because he's mute it would mean all spells with verbal compenents would be unavailable to him. Pity, because he would really like to know how to teleport to and fro. Is the boy able to learn the Teleport spell with--for example--a somatic component instead of verbal? Does it upset balance alot if you would change components? (I realise it would for Material components with a effective gold value, so I'm more thinking in Verbal-Somatic switch.) Or would the boy just have to make a new spell for it, lets say "Jimmy's Silent Teleport"? |

However he can still decide not to apply the meta magic to his spell if he has no desire for this advantage. If you're mute it would mean you have no choice but to cast the spell at one level higher, since you want that spell, even if you don't desire its advantage. Its a delicate difference between the two situation. But its an option if it would be that there is no other way then to deal with it this way. However I just realise, if it would be allowed to change spell components, it would render this metamagic feat a bit less meaningful. Balance issue? |

I guess you could go a route that the PC has figured out a way to cast silenced spells at the same level but it just increases the casting time (from 1 standard action to 1 full round, from 1 full round to 2 or more full rounds) but you need something to compensate for the fact that the character is casting differently than everyone else. At least IMO :) |
