| paskry06-24-07, 10:57 AM | I was wondering where I could find a list of the current and/or past Chosen of the various dieties of the Forgotten Realms. Thanks, Paskry |
| wtf_thats_my_head06-24-07, 11:04 AM | try wiki they have info on gods take a quick look maybe they have it maybe not |
| paskry06-24-07, 07:19 PM | The only chosen they have is for Mystra. |
| Alleran06-24-07, 11:55 PM | Untrue. Cadderly is statted, and he's the Chosen of Deneir. |
| Zevox06-25-07, 12:35 AM | As it happens, members of this board compiled a list of known Chosen a while back. | Walls06-25-07, 12:55 AM | I still gotta ask where you found all these? Are they in the FR sourcebooks? |
| wtf_thats_my_head06-25-07, 08:29 AM | ok i think the rotting man is dead or missing it happen in a novel a good one to and y fox at twilght wat did she do ?? |
| Zevox06-25-07, 01:06 PM | I still gotta ask where you found all these? Are they in the FR sourcebooks? Many of them are, yes, though not as statted characters, just lore notes (for instance, the FRCS notes that Ubtao's six Chosen rule in Chult). Quite a few of them from 2nd edition books I believe - Kuje provided many of them. Others come from novels - Cadderly and Pertelope are from RA Salvatore's Cleric Quintet novels, all of Mask's Chosen are from either Paul Kemp's novels or Crucible: Trial of Cyric the Mad, Kelemvor's ex-chosen is likewise from Crucible, Lolth's Chosen is from the end of the War of the Spider Queen series, and so on. ok i think the rotting man is dead or missing it happen in a novel a good one to and y fox at twilght wat did she do ?? Lady of Poison, aye. His defeat at the end of that seemed less than fatal, though - he just disappears, and it says that his last words were "I yield only for this moment." That might qualify as "missing" I suppose, but it seems obvious hes still alive, just fled from that encounter. As for Fox-at-Twilight, according to the posters here who also hang out at Candlekeep, the author that created her has hinted at her being a Chosen. Not confirmed it (hence the "possible" classification), but hinted at it enough for it to seem very likely. Zevox |
| Lord Karsus06-25-07, 02:31 PM | -Yeah, that list is as "up-to-date" as it gets. |
| wtf_thats_my_head06-27-07, 09:46 AM | k i thought the rotting man was living but the fox lady just tricked me off |
| Lord Karsus06-28-07, 05:53 PM | k i thought the rotting man was living... -He is. Well, he never died, per se. |
| Alleran07-10-07, 10:59 AM | Just bringing this back up to ask a question related to the number of Chosen in FR: The above list is the known Chosen, but how many would people guess there are elsewhere as well? As in, Mystra has something on the order of half her power tied up in her Chosen + Azuth, IIRC and I find it hard to believe that only twelve or so and Azuth can hold that much divine energy. Likewise, the Cleric Quintet states that Cadderly is a Chosen, obviously, but that there are possibly others as well, with that Headmistress lady being one. I haven't read all through the entire series yet, though (been busy catching up on Cormyr), so it may state later on that Cadderly is the only living Chosen of Deneir or something to that effect. Anyway, thoughts? |
| Lord Karsus07-10-07, 11:21 AM | The above list is the known Chosen, but how many would people guess there are elsewhere as well? -I'm sure that there are more Chosen that we just don't know about. There's lots of stuff that we don't know about, concerning the Forgotten Realms. Fox-At-Twilight, if she is indeed a Chosen, was a recent creation. Any other authors/designers can create more Chosen in that same manner at any time. |
| sleyvas07-10-07, 11:48 AM | my personal feeling is that any greater deity more than likely has someone who is akin to a chosen. They are in essence the current leader of the church. I believe this because greater deity's have the power to spare, and having a chosen would tend to increase their divine devotion (think of it like having spare money that you put in investments to earn you more spare money). For some like Tyr, I could see possibly even 2 chosen, possibly leading say the northern and southern parts of the church. Intermediate and Lesser deities, I'd bet they only have a chosen if they have an individual who is going above and beyond to spread the word or mimic the ethos of their deity. Thus, while there may be a I'd bet demi-gods have no chosen. They can barely form an avatar, so they'd probably work more through aspects than chosen. However, there may be a really devoted priestess of Sharess out there somewhere  |
| Old Sage07-10-07, 11:50 AM | Twilight's status has yet to be "fully and officially" confirmed completely in canon -- in other words, it's not actually something stated in the novel or in sourcebooks. For now, it's just an interpretation the reader picks up from Twilight's published appearances so far. In some of the Candlekeep Book Club [or was it in Erik's 'Questions' scroll?] discussions regarding Twilight's status, Erik tell us that he established a pretty strong connection for the "special" relationship that exists between Twilight and Erevan through several passages in Depths of Madness. And that's mostly what I thought when I read through them myself. That's enough for me to believe that Twilight does in fact enjoy a unique status of sorts among Erevan's faithful, and that Erik will elaborate further on that status if and when he has the opportunity to do so. And so long as it isn't contradicted by WotC in future FR source material, 'tis likely to remain that way. Whether she's an actual Chosen of Erevan, isn't completely known, yet. And this from Erik - "Yup. It has not been established one way or another, and until it is, I can't comment one way or another. From many things Twilight has *said*, it's a reasonable assumption. But there isn't any particular reason to trust anything she says. There's also one particular scene in Depths that seems to contradict her "chosen" status. Cheers" |
| Faraer07-10-07, 01:57 PM | 'Is X a Chosen?' isn't a definite question, because 'Chosen' is a term that, alongside others, has been applied to a range of different specially favoured divine servants. |
| Zevox07-10-07, 02:07 PM | Mask has at least one more Chosen yet to be revealed, possibly three. In Cale's novels he and Riven are referred to as Mask's "First and Second of Five," so depending on if Kesson Rel and Avner of Hartsvale are among these Five he has between one and three more Chosen yet to be revealed, or possibly yet to be anointed. | Green Elven Vampire07-11-07, 12:48 AM | She basically states she's a chosen in Depths of Madness, and I thought the author has said it. All you want to know about Twilight can be found on the novel discussions over at Candlekeep. I have asked many, many questions on The Fox being that Erevan Ilesere is my favorite deity of all time. She is a 17'th level NPC with a writeup along the lines of Rogue 6/ Shadowdancer 6/ Divine Seeker 4/ Uncanny Trickster 1 |
| Green Elven Vampire07-11-07, 12:56 AM | Here is Erik's actual post at Candlekeep when I asked him about Twilight. Posted - 16 Mar 2007 : 22:34:37 by Erik Scott de Bie. I've actually made a considerable effort lately to try to pin down Twilight's stats, and I fear I haven't quite got a perfect articulation of her. So any answer I give will necessarily be the roughest of drafts. She definitely has shadowdancer levels (articulated by her dancing) and definitely divine seeker levels. And, as you may have guessed, she's not just a simple thief when it comes to fighting. There's some martial training in her as well (but that's another novel). In particular, she has FOUR levels of divine seeker (because she has the divine perseverence ability, but not the find the path ability). As for when I say "not the godly sort," I think you'll see what I mean in the course of the book. Erevan is indeed her patron deity and *master* (as much as anyone or anything can master her), but she spends most of her time trying to flee her responsibilities to him . . . yet always seems to serve his purposes anyway. Her relationship with Erevan is not the typical sort of mortal-god dynamic -- just what exactly it is, well, we'll just have to see, won't we? Back to statting: Of exceptional use in this process is the Complete Scoundrel (it goes without saying that Twilight fits such a description rather aptly). The basic class structure would be something like this: CN female moon elf rogue 4 / swashbuckler 3 / shadowdancer 5 / divine seeker 4 (making her a total CL 16, and giving her a BAB of +12 -- perfect for a straight-classed rogue of her CL.) The real question, at this point, is whether you want to go use the Scoundrel rules more completely, in which case she's probably got some Uncanny Trickster (a prestige class from CS) levels in there as well. Then again, it's entirely up to Wizards -- if/when they publish a statblock of the Fox-at-Twilight, that would be our answer! Cheers |
| Old Sage07-11-07, 01:11 AM | She basically states she's a chosen in Depths of Madness, and I thought the author has said it.No, she doesn't -- at least not directly. And no he didn't. Twilight's official status, with regard to her relationship to Erevan, is as I, and Erik's quoted words, indicated above. |
| MarkusTay6307-11-07, 02:26 AM | Wasn't the hero at the end of the "Threat from the Sea" series also a chosen, as it turned out? He isn't called a chosen, but he most definately was chosen right from the beginning by some god (Lathander?). All indications throughout the series ponted to him being chosen... I was just dissapointed by the choice of god by the author. Ruined the whole thing for me; I thought it was going to be Umberlee. I guess you can only expect twists like that in real novels. Predictability is FR's bread & butter, unfortunately. |

Predictability is FR's bread & butter, unfortunately. There was a little argument about that when the first version of that list was made. I don't think theres anything in those novels indicating Jherek to have been chosen to be anything but a Paladin. Even when Lathander speaks to him, he refers to him as "one of my chosen champions" (plural), which given he has no known Chosen surely indicates hes referring to being a Paladin. Zevox |
| Old Sage07-11-07, 03:18 AM | Indeed. There is no official Chosen for Lathander. Not every deity has a Chosen. In fact, I think if we could turn back the clock, we would have preferred that only Mystra had them, or more correctly, used the term "Chosen," as I've often said. |
| MarkusTay6307-11-07, 05:36 PM | Only Mystra SHOULD have Chosen - everyone else should just be an agent of the God, or Champion, or whatever. Worst case of 'ME TOO!" by authors I have ever seen. Why is it when one person comes up with a really unique, cool concept, others feel the need to spread it around for themselves? Get your own godamn ideas! :headexplo Sorry - I'm in a venting mood today. |
| Green Elven Vampire07-11-07, 06:10 PM | Personally, I love the idea of other deities having Chosen! It is their representative to Faerun and the one they have do all their mortal work for them in dire needs. In the case of Erevan Ilesere, I would assume the chosen to be as free and uncontrollable as any fey being on Toril. To upset the rule of law and cause as much mayhem and enlightened mischief as possible. |
| Lord Karsus07-11-07, 06:31 PM | Personally, I love the idea of other deities having Chosen! It is their representative to Faerun and the one they have do all their mortal work for them in dire needs. -I do too, and I am one of the few who like all deities using the term. |
| Faraer07-11-07, 07:24 PM | It is their representative to Faerun and the one they have do all their mortal work for them in dire needs. That's what priests are for. And proxies, divine champions, and other positions without designers having to misunderstand and misappropriate the Chosen that Mystra has. |
| HVulpes07-11-07, 07:52 PM | My two cents... I think it might be best to think this way: There are Chosen and then there are chosen. Like how some christian capitialize the G in God when dealing with their true god compare to false god, it make a different in the nature of chosen. Chosen are those of Mystra who serve as holders of some of her own divine power. This grants them great power linked with the nature of magic itself. chosen are those specially selected and focused on by their god for a purpose. As such they are given powers linked with their god to perform the work of that god. Like shadow powers for Mask or domination powers for Bane. While the divine rank power is not placed in these mortal, divine energy is and can empower these people. Also I do believe that Demigods can have chosen. Like Epic clerics, the epic cleric/chosen does more to promote the god then the average clergy and is worthy of more power and attention. Think of it like paying an amount of power in to get several times that energy back from those influence by that cleric and his deeds. The question is finding one worthy of that power. Just some quick thoughts. |
| BrennonGoldeye07-11-07, 08:20 PM | Ok, this Chosen thread is relatively new so I will ask this. Is there any other reference to the Chosen of Azuth besides the Magister template? :) |
| Zevox07-11-07, 09:04 PM | Personally, I love the idea of other deities having Chosen! It is their representative to Faerun and the one they have do all their mortal work for them in dire needs. I agree. Especially considering how active the Deities of Faerûn are, it seems to me only logical that Deities would appoint specific mortals as their greatest, most direct servants and grant them powers beyond just a typical Priest's to facilitate that. I don't see why some get so upset over the use of the term "Chosen" for Chosen other than Mystra's - yeah Mystra's are a bit different due to carrying part of her divine power directly, but all Chosen of different Deities are different in some ways. The term is appropriate, so why not use it? Zevox |
| Old Sage07-11-07, 09:17 PM | Because there's more to Mystra's Chosen than that. As I've said many times... I never lump Mystra's Chosen together with the rest of the now more apparent Chosen of deities in the 3e FR. Part of why Mystra's Chosen are unique is because of their role. They balance out Mystra, and store some of her power in case it's needed. They're kinda like "loyal opposition" -- they are loyal to Mystra, but they are not controlled by her, and with them having some of her power, they can act in opposition to her if she gets out of control. They are also assistants of a sort; they work to further the spread of magic, but in a pinch, they can also help to maintain the Weave. That is why Mystra has Chosen. That is why hers are special. Most of the other Chosen of FR deities, or rather... "Divine Champions" as I call them, are but pale shadows. "Divine Champion" would work well enough for any. Or any other title of specialty that doesn't reflect a connection to the special nature of Mystra's own Chosen. There's virtually no basis for the connection between the roles of the other "Chosen" of the various deities and Mystra's Chosen -- so the titles should be different. To even suggest the possibility that the Divine Champions of the other deities reflect a little of what Mystra's Chosen are, takes away the charm of the Chosen of Mystra characters and makes their entire position in the Realms seem "usual." |
| MerrikCale07-11-07, 09:26 PM | No, she doesn't -- at least not directly. And no he didn't. Twilight's official status, with regard to her relationship to Erevan, is as I, and Erik's quoted words, indicated above. I stand corrected. For some reason, I thought he said that somewhere. My bad. But Twilight does sort of hint at it in the book. At least from my interpertation |

It still looks to me like it boils down the difference being that her Chosen have a part of her divine power themselves, and the responsibilities that go with that, whereas others don't. And to be perfectly honest, I can't see any reason why that means they should have the title "Chosen" reserved for them alone, when it certainly seems just as applicable to the rest. Yes, they're not the same, but then again none of the Chosen of different Deities are the same - hells, some Chosen with the same Deity aren't even the same in what their tasks and granted abilities are. | ravenspawn07-12-07, 12:51 AM | Ok, this Chosen thread is relatively new so I will ask this. Is there any other reference to the Chosen of Azuth besides the Magister template? :) Apart from the Magister, the Faiths and Pantheons book mentions, in Azuth's write-up, that he has a cadre of Favored in Faerun. These Favored are said to be slain human wizards ressurected by the Lord of Spells himself but which are in fact magical constructs of his subconscious mind. For my campaign, I created a "Chosen of Azuth" template as the wizard in my game is attempting to stop the weave corruption in the City of the Spider Queen. And this is a drow wizard. Here's the template: Chosen of Azuth : (+1 ECL) Does not age, Does not need to sleep (although you must still rest to regain your spells), Read & Detect magic (sp) at will, Damage reduction 10/magic, As a full round action, you can use the Spellcraft skill to search for “glyph, symbol & rune” traps of any kind and use the Knowledge (arcane) to disarm them (as a full round action as well). The trap’s search & disarm DC does not change but you don’t need any tools, just time. Bonus spells; gain one bonus spell of each spell level 1st to 4th, in the schools of Divination, Abjuration or Conjuration, which can be used as spell-like abilities. 1/day each, at your caster level. Once chosen these spells cannot be changed. Spell immunities ; (Su) choose one bonus spell of each spell level 1st to 4th, in any school. It is as if you are constantly under the effect of a spell immunity spell. Once chosen these spells cannot be changed. Also, a Chosen of Azuth may • A) scribe a scroll at only 25% of the experience point and materials costs (i.e. gp), but still at the standard time (1 day per 1000gp, minimum of 1 day) or; • B) scribe a scroll in 1 hour per 1000 gp of the base cost, but at twice the experience point cost (maximum 20 hours per day) & a spell requires a minimum of 1 hour. Material costs stay the same. Tell me what you think. THX |

Yes, they're not the same, but then again none of the Chosen of different Deities are the same - hells, some Chosen with the same Deity aren't even the same in what their tasks and granted abilities are. There's no exact, consistent definition of what a 'Chosen' is. The gods invest a few of their followers with certain special roles and powers, and folk call some of these 'Chosen'. Some have immortality in various forms, others may not. There are lots of different ways a god can invest a mortal follower with power, which we could arbitrarily divide into, from lesser to greater: 1. priests; 2. things like Mystra's spellstaves; 3. the Chosen of Bane or Deneir, Seraph of Lies, or the Magister; 4. Mystra's Chosen, which are a unique case. Even if there are some who wish to maintain the 'Chosen' term for ALL the special divine servants of the various gods, I would think that noting the apparent difference in the other Chosen when compared to Mystra's Chosen, as I indicated above, is still important when discussing the various Chosen now apparent in the Realmslore. But then you have the Divine Champion PrC to worry about. If you are going to use another term I think that one is not the way to go. Proxie, Seraph whatever but not Divine Champion. Personally I have no problems with calling them chosen, but thats just me.By using the term 'Divine Champion,' I'm not intentionally connecting it to the conception of the Divine Champion PrC itself. Rather, I'm using the term in its most basic sense... simply using it as a generic placeholder reflecting the special position one particular worshipper may occupy in a deity's clergy. 'Seraph,' 'proxy,' or even 'Servant of the Divine' can be just as easily used in place of my reference of 'Divine Champion.' |
