| Zandilar07-30-07, 10:19 AM | Heya, Archery Domain Don't really have much to say about this one. Love Domain Deity: Hanali Selanil, Isis, Sharindalar, Sune Domain Powers: Once per day, you may use a Turn Undead attempt to instead instill a friendly target with feelings of love and admiration. The subject gains +2 divine bonus to their saving throws and is immune to emotion-changing effects (including confusion, fear and insanity) for 1 minute per level. Domain Spells 1st Remove Fear 2nd Shield Other 3rd Remove Blindness/Deafness 4th Heroism 5th Atonement 6th Heal 7th Heroism, Greater 8th Sympathy 9th Heal, Mass This one needs more cowbell, or more pepper, or both. With the domain power, I think you could explain it a little better than you have. There's a disconnect between it's description "you may use a Turn Undead attempt to instead instill a friendly target with feelings of love and admiration" and what it actually does "The subject gains +2 divine bonus to their saving throws and is immune to emotion-changing effects (including confusion, fear and insanity) for 1 minute per level." I think you could explain it better like thus - "you may use a turn undead attempt to instill a friendly target with feelings of paternal/maternal love for all allies around them. This gives the target a +2 divine bonus to saving throws, and makes them immune to hostile emotion-changing effects (including, but not limited to, Calm Emotions, Charm Person, Confusion, Fear, and Insanity) - the target feels very protective of his or her allies and gives them the emotional fortitude to do whatever it takes to make sure they are safe." (Charm Person is mentioned there because that changes a person's emotions to the point where someone they would ordinarily view as an enemy is seen as a friend. I specified hostile because there are some friendly emotion changing effects that you'd not want your allies immune to - such as Remove Fear, for those targets who were already under a fear effect before the domain power was activated.) The spell list seems wrong too. It's too focused on healing and abjuration. With tweaking, it would make a GREAT spell list for a Compassion or Mercy type domain. |
| marius407-31-07, 07:44 PM | For Archery, they are all spells that affect a single person only...yes? Was that your intent? Wouldn't it be cool to have spells that affect legions of archers and such?? There are a couple in the Spell Compendium (wind tunnel, guiding light, etc.). And is there room (or desire) to fit in any protection from the other guy's archery? Just some questions to think about if you want. The granted power here is fine. Personally as a player, however, I might prefer having Proficiency in both longbows and shortbows and forgo the Weapon Focus. For Love, I actually really like the flavor of the spells you chose. They evoke forgiveness, heroism, "love is blind," and similar ideas. Perhaps what Zandilar was getting at was there don't seem to be any Enchantments at all. You may have wanted to stay away from cliche, but maybe you drifted a little too far...? Also, on second look, having both Heal and Mass Heal may be a bit much here. Regarding the granted power, the idea of using turning attempts is interesting but I don't really get the utility of the ability. Maybe the cleric him or herself could just be immune to emotion-affecting spells. Or maybe grant some type of charm or fascination spell-like ability. Or at least rework the mechanics of this protecting ability. As a side note, see the Bright Warden prestige class from DragonLance's Holy Orders of the Stars for an effective use of the turning mechanic. And if you might be so kind, perhaps drop a comment on the domains I'm about to post for feedback as well. :) |

Also, on second look, having both Heal and Mass Heal may be a bit much here. Yes, that is pretty much what I was getting at. I have a feeling Mad Mage was trying to avoid using Enchantment spells in the list because then there would be too much overlap with domains like Pleasure, Joy, and Charm. However, the list, as it stands, with both Heal and Mass Heal is too focused on healing, and not focused enough on the emotion of love. Charm Person (or Monster), Calm Emotions, Heroes' Feast, and (tentatively) Aid would fit on the list, IMHO, while Heal, Mass Heal, and Remove Blindness/Deafness are all out of place. (I am aware that not all my suggested spells are actually direct replacements of similar levels for the ones I'd take out, so it is my opinion that the list needs a complete reworking.) Regarding the granted power, the idea of using turning attempts is interesting but I don't really get the utility of the ability. Maybe the cleric him or herself could just be immune to emotion-affecting spells. Or maybe grant some type of charm or fascination spell-like ability. | Mad Mage08-01-07, 06:47 PM | Yeah, 1/day on the Love domain power probably sounds more appropriate. Been so occupied as of lately, I'm surprised I'm thinking straight. As far as the Love domain spells, yes, I was hoping to shy away from charming spells, although in my case, I was more concerened with sounding too much like the Charm domain. I don't have access to every single sourcebook in existence, alongside every issue of Dragon that has such. Aid and Calm Emotions, though, were ideas I had, but decided against in favor of the ones I put. As far as Archery is concerned, I will state again: I don't have current access to everything. I was lucky to have been able to buy Champions of Ruin. No, I'm not poor/destitute or something like that, but I still do have to watch out that I'm not draining my wallet constantly. That, and I was more gearing towards the cleric's capabilities with bows (including crossbows and the greatbow) and spells that seemed to shoot arrows or alter the arrows that are shot. |

Aid and Calm Emotions, though, were ideas I had, but decided against in favor of the ones I put. Well I was on the right track. :) There is probably a reason why there isn't a Love domain in existence already - it's just too subjective. People's opinions are always going to differ on what epitomizes love and what doesn't. I mean, I can see how Raise Dead or Resurrection might fit into a Love domain spell list, for example. On the other hand, I can see how a Love domain list might consist entirely of custom spells dealing with emotion - particularly the emotions of happiness, joy, compassion, pleasure, and selflessness. As far as Archery is concerned, I will state again: I don't have current access to everything. I was lucky to have been able to buy Champions of Ruin. If circumstances ever allow, I'd recommend you acquire the Spell Compendium. It's a very useful book with spells drawn from pretty much every source that was published prior to it. It also has an extensive list of domains (and a quick peruse through it reveals no Love domain there either). |
