Since Cyric is the one who causes Mystra to die, he is placed under house arrest for some odd thousand years. Do you think this will also mean that he will be "silent" as Lolth was to her clerics? If so, isn't this punishment in all actuality quite a drastic punishment, as that in a thousand years of no mention of this god, Cyric will come out a demigod at best, and just cease to be known and therefore exist at worst. Do you think this is a good punishment? I do, but I just wanted to hear your feedback.

unfortunaly since R. Baker has said they had him murder Mystra so they can move on with him and tell more stories about him I don't think this punishment will hold for long. So it is really a very empty thing.

Yeah, I really don't like Cyric, I never have, and he was one of the things that always torqued me off.

I would rather have kept Bane the whole way through. Cyric is themeless, characterless, and uninteresting. Bane drives plots, Cyric doesn't.

I am happy if Mask steals intrigue and Illusion from him. Nimbral should totally worship Mask.;)

-I recall that Rich Baker mentioned that Cyric's priests and priestess' would continue recieving their spells. After all, Ultilu (Sp?) is in a catatonic sleep, yet his priests and priestess' recieve spells.

I too feel that Cyric will be out before the end of 2008.

We will probably even have yet another RSE at the same time.

I feel that the Devs are speaking with forked tongues and no longer even pretend to make sense anymore...

But that's okay because 4ED will be AWESOME and COOL!!!11!1!111!

I would love to see that slaying Mystra and tricking Tyr into murdering Helm has given the lord of murder, trickery, deception and lies (among other things) such an unexpected power backslash that it made him become something else.

Now no longer "merely" a greater power Cyric has transcended and is now something far more terrible and his imprisonment wasn't a punishmet imposed from a position of strength, but a desperate last-ditch attempt constrain him before he could go on a murderous rampage through the pantheons. It was merely through some "old divine tricks about messing with the planar structure" that they barely managed to close his plane for a thousand years and their fear is that either Cyric figures out how to undo it, or just simply shreds their barrier to pieces or that one day the thousand years will be over and they haven't found a way to defeat him during the time.

it's a cop out.
a convenient way for the developers to keep him around for another harrowing exploit. that is, he's a good ole' standby.
you'd think w/ so many enemies, they would form a crude alliance to deal w/ him as he is still a young upstart so to speak. that is, between Kelemvore (and Jergal), Bane, Mystra, and everyone else he ****** off, surely they could have wrapped this up and quick and tidy fashion considering their vast amount of worshipers, combined divine ranks and resources vs. his own.
and if Tyr were truly exacting justice, um, shouldn't the punishment fit the crime in the purest LN sense?
the whole thing just smacks of poor writing and a lack of vision in its final outcome.

I wonder what Cyric will be doing for the next thousand years. I'm betting his time will be split between playing solitare, talking to himself, or watching Dr. Phil.

Why didn't do they it with each and every power they don't like? Why stop with Cyric? Why not continue to wipe out Bane and his servitors, Talos and his servitors and ....

First of all it's not that easy to assault a power on her home plane, even if you have superior numbers. Also Cyric's church is one of the hardest to fight on the mortal coil, because it's like Al Qaida -> you just don't have any open targets to strike at.

Last but not least: It's never anything more than a hollow victory. Cyric's (and Bane's, Talos', ...) portfolios are natural forces. If you slay the current incarnation, a new one will arise. Tyr can't vanquish the things Cyric stands for, even if he slays Cyric, he will only create a new enemy in the wake.

I belive that Rich Baker has (more or less) confirmed that Cyric won't stay captive for long. He seemed to indicate that Cyric would be out in a couple of years max - definately before 5e. Baker has also said that WotC isn't holding back any RSEs, so they continue their course of driving shoddy changes down the community's throat. Unfortunately, I don't have sources for either of these :(

Last but not least: It's never anything more than a hollow victory. ... Tyr can't vanquish the things Cyric stands for, even if he slays Cyric, he will only create a new enemy in the wake.

It doesn't matter if there always is a "evil murder god" in the Realms. What most people hate is the character Cyric. He basically just rampages through previously good stories, mauling everything of taste, leaving a smoking wreck behind. If they created a well written, intriguing, and most of all usable god of murder, strife, etc (eg an evil Loki) then most people wouldn't have a problem with him.

And that new enemy might be worse than Cyric.....

Which would be a great relief to many, I think.

Most of the people I've talked to regard Cyric as a whiny, petty, irritating pest of a god as opposed to one that should be feared. I personally would be ALOT happier if Ao just destroyed Cyric for being a pretentious, deluded imbecile and appointed someone more competent and menacing to do the job. Not that I would've ever killed off Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul to begin with, but let's not go there...

I replaced Cyric with the god Borem...who was killed by the three [bane, myrkul, and bhaal] long ago.

I figured he'd had a lot of time to stew over his defeat, and had his debut appearence with him picking his teeth with the twisted remnents of the horned crown [myrkul's last vestige].

My players asked that he spend some time stalking Bane's clerics and eventually make a play for Bane himself. :plotting:

Cyric was killed in my campaign by a masterful trick played by Leira, back from the not really dead after all! :cheer: :dancin: :D

That and the god killing dagger that was formerly left in Borem's heart now rests on Mystra's left hip. :ayyyy!:

Bane got the "joke".

And Borem, now a demigod of Anger and Murder, is more of what a god of murder should be in my players and I's opinions.

Any offerings of ideas or plot twists will be eagerly perused and used. :)

This thread is provoking a very scarey line of thought for me...

If Cyric is sentenced to a thousand years of imprisonment, and he IS active in the new 4e realms, then doesn't that mean...

<GULP>

...and we were worried about a hundred year time jump. :(

He can still grant spells and answer prayers even though he's imprisoned. As someone else pointed out, there're gods who're in even worse positions who can still grant spells (They're catatonic, asleep, etc).

If I was wizards I would do a jump of about 1000 years...and have the Spell plague hit about a 900 years before the timeline. Then they could publish New FR and Classic FR. And if the New FR fails they can always just cancel it and still retain the Realms...but no they had to burn down dridges. This is why our economy sucks right now by the way...Short-sighted market research driven decisions.

Here's a few questions...

If Cyric is going to be the golden boy of evil... Why bring back Bane?

And why is his rebirth just a wee blurb in a couple of reference books?

Maybe they're keeping the ringer on the bench for the big game comming...

-Truthfully, Cyric should be dead, as he was (apparently) with Mystra when she died. When a deity dies, their divine realm kind of collapses. While I don't remember reading anything about how long that takes, one would assume it's instantly, as the deity itself is what keeps the realm together.

Well Savras was killed with the realms collapse, though Azuth and Velsharoon were shunted off through the Astral to drift for a time, so who knows.

It seems unlikely that Cyric would stick around for such an event, but then again I think it is tough to justify imprisoning him for doing what his portfolios dictate. Thus I am also of the mind that it pleases me to see him not lost to 4E.

Just a thought... maybe he is imprisoned in Mystra's collapsed realm, but instead of being killed instantly he somehow survives and is only trapped for a couple of years.

I'm not a fan of Cyric either

-Perhaps by absorbing some of Mystra's essence after killing her, he is able to stop her realm from completely collapsing and only just succeeds, trapping himself.

-Like I said, it depends on just exactly how a deity's divine Realm collapses. Personally, I'd make it collapse instantly- which wouldn't give Cyric or anyone else much time to make an escape.

Aren't they're quite a few fading realms of dead deities still around? Seems like it takes a while for a realm to fade.

Anyway, as a greater deity himself, I don't think Cyric would have much trouble with holding a stable pocket of the divinely morphic plane matter around himself even while anything around him collapses

Mötley Crüe petitioned for her to stay in jail. Awesomeness.

And Cyric is the the god of Madness, he didn't do anything wrong, technically. He's bringing 4ed closer, which madness.

-I can't see the future, so I can't tell you if he is still going to be alive in 4e or not. As per the current year (1375 DR), yes, yes he is alive, albeit in a 'coma'. The fact that he hasn't been mentioned in any products leads me to believe that the designers have, literally, forgotten about him- meaning that he'll likely be placed in the 'dead' pile.

Here's what On Hallowed Grounds says about the realms of dead deities:
The realm itself remains on the same plane and layer, but the stench of death surrounds and permeates it. Buildings crumble, trees sag and collapse and geographical features dissolve into mist. Horrid creatures (remnants of the god's consciousness) roam the ruined ground, lashing out in reflexive action at any berk they spy. When the power finally expires, the realm is nothing but a vast expanse of wasted land. It can take thousands of years to return to the conditions of the surrounding plane.
While the realm certainly isn't what it used to be, the area should still be clearly recognizable as the ex-realm of a dead deity.

Hi everybody. I have some questions! I'm from Hungary, and gaming materials are rarely translated or even imported to my country. So my question is what happened to Mystra and Cyric and the others (this one scares the hell out of me). If someone could help me i'll be glad. Which one is that novel by R. Baker?

I takes nearly a year to translate a novel (if it is a well-known one, like Drizzt's stories), but for example the Return of the Archwizards trilogy is unavailable in my country (which is not exatly a fresh one:( ). So please help me with this. Thanks.
Oh by the way, which year is it (DR i mean)?

I suspect that Cyric would seem like less of a loser, if his best known agent wasn't that fat idiot who can't lie, and if there were actually novels and other source material built around the ambitions and success of evil characters serving Cyric. As it is, the dude is mostly a failed creation IMO, and should be scrapped in favor of a slowly rising demi-god, whose vision surpasses the cheap tricks that Cyric comes up with.

Well my latest post here is a version of Cyric's punishment that exists in my campaign.

http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=983248

But, personally, I hope that Cyric gets at least a hundred years of imprisonment but if it's just imprisonment of his avatars then it's really not much of a punishment. Takhasis was imprisoned in the Abyss by Huma and she was still Queen of Darkness.
