(I'm cross-posting because I'm not sure exactly how to categorize this question)

Has your caster ever lost a familiar? How did you handle the RP aspect of the sudden loss of XP? Is there anything in cannon (whether rules or fiction) that sheds more light on the subject than the bare bones laid out in the sorcerer class description?

I've always treated it like sudden trauma. The familiar is literally a part of the mage who "summons" it. You invest some of your personality with it, so in the event of its death, it is sort of like losing a hand or arm. And occasionally you still feel that empathic connection, but its gone. Plus... you are empathically connected... you feel it dying. That's got to smart.
