| Duedaine09-07-07, 04:25 PM | What god or goddess would a carpenter worship? PS I tend not to like Gond |
| MarkHall09-07-07, 04:39 PM | Unfortunately, Gond is the most ideal. While he's got a wizbang reputation, he's the deity of the simple crafts, too. You might also think of Lathander, who is the god of creation. If he's more into making sculpture, he might find the patronage of Sune. He might give worship to Valkur, if he's a shipwright, or Waukeen, if he's into the business aspects of his trade. But, when you get down to it, Gond is the one who deals with building things and artifice. |
| MarkusTay6309-07-07, 04:53 PM | Civicus - god of architects, carpenters, construction work, and structures. ;) I just made him up, BTW. ;) |
| Mad Mage09-07-07, 05:25 PM | Well, if you don't mind going with a non-Faeruian/human pantheon, you could use Moradin. He represents all crafts to the dwarves, including smithing/metalworking. Maybe you could make some roleplaying flavor and say your character has some dwarven heritage. If said character's more of a carpenter that builds houses or other home-related items, maybe they could worship the halfling goddess Cyrrollalee, goddess of the hospitality and crafts. Inside the Faerunian Pantheon, besides Gond, your carpenter character could, say, worship Chauntea for the harvest of wood that supplies his work. Either that, or pay tribute to Silvanus in some shape or form. |
| BadCatMan09-07-07, 08:55 PM | Also try Flandal Steelskin of the Gnomes, god of smithing, though no carpentry there. The other gnomish craft god is Nebelun, patron of invention, but his attempt to enter the Realms was absorbed into Gond, hence Gond's following among the gnomes. Corellon Larethian is the elven god of crafts (I doubt he'd like carpenters much). The Mulhorandi don't seem to have a crafts god. That's wierd. Also try Zionil. It's Gond's name in Durpar, but I theorize that Zionil used to be a separate god, possibly from the Utter East. You could just tweak the god to suit you. Or you could only pay lip-service to Gond for the sake of your crafts, which is what most Torillians would do, while saving your soul for a completely different deity. After all, it's your business, not your life. |
| ywhtptgtfo09-07-07, 09:18 PM | What god or goddess would a carpenter worship? PS I tend not to like Gond Depends on personality... Sune, Liira, Eldath, Waukeen, and Helm are possibilities. |
| MerrikCale09-07-07, 11:08 PM | Waukeen and Lathander make the most sense to me |
| captaincarot09-08-07, 07:46 AM | if it's a high craftman sort who creates beutiful furniture for the elite of society then you could get away with sune from the beauty angle. rationalising that he creates sculptures of beautiful forms in wood. |
| Faraer09-08-07, 12:11 PM | The gods artisans most tend to favour are Gond and Oghma, per Cyclopedia of the Realms. |
| 1 ton ghost09-08-07, 12:38 PM | you could run a million ways w/ this, there shouldn't be any one fixed deity by vocation, race, or otherwise... Gond-creator, etc. most carpentry isn't exactly high tech Silvanus/any nature deity-the "raw materials" came from somewhere, yes? consider the reference for darkwood, etc. living things "immortalized" in finished form. Waukeen-buying/selling of his handiwork Grumbar-earth, growing things, wood...not a good choice, but perhaps he's genasi Illmater-hate to say it, but he's a close mirror to Jesus and he was a carpenter. and bla bla bla. yeah, most have a patron deity, but even a goodly sailor is not so prideful as to refuse Umberlee an offering before setting sail. many respects to many deities. ie)the right tool for the right job |

I mean Illmater. Seriously, though I was thinking about pursuing the shipwright angle. I do really like the suggestion of Oghma, also. I tend to think that nature deities (particularly Silvanus) would be ****** about a carpenter cutting down trees to use for human gain. Thank you all. |
| GothicDan09-08-07, 04:25 PM | My order would go like this: Gond, Oghma, Sune, Lathander, Waukeen. |
| Shuuya09-21-07, 10:20 AM | Illmater-hate to say it, but he's a close mirror to Jesus and he was a carpenter. Jesus doesn't exist in Toril though, or at least not in canonical Toril as far as I understand. I'd disallow that logic because the carpenter couldn't have knowledge of Jesus unless he managed to planeshift all the way to our Material, learn about Jesus and then planeshift back. Ilmater has pretty much nothing else to do with carpentry so it'd seem odd for him to worship him if he was just a "carpenter." However, you could just say he worships Ilmater because he believes in helping those who suffer and donates a sum of his profits to charity or the homeless, and looks after others who are suffering, as well as being a carpenter. Perhaps he grew up in a small town that was wiped out by an illness or plague and he survived along with a few others and had to try and nurse people or saw extreme suffering. I'd probably go for Gond, Lathander or Waukeen as his patron if he was dedicated to his craft as his primary interest, but if he worshipped another god he'd probably honour those three to help his business. |
| GothicDan09-21-07, 11:33 AM | Ilmater is only a close mirror to Jesus if you're a cultural and religious ignoramus. |
| Spelldancer09-21-07, 11:41 AM | If you were going for the ship builder type, you might think of Valkur or Selune, both patrons of sailors. Selune for navigation more so, but it could work. There is also possibly Istishia. Though if you want a straight craft god I lean more to the following, in order. Gond, Lathander, Sune, Oghma, Waukeen, Shaundakul Shaundakul for the trade aspect, but also the travel as well. Exploring new horizons (sailing), and that boats in this time are 99% driven by wind (his air connection there) |
| daimyotx09-21-07, 11:42 AM | personally I'd go with Waukeen if you don't want to use Gond. As a carpenter, if I wasn't worried about tying myself to a god related to artifice and crafting - then I'd tie myself to one that promoted wealth, trade, and mercantilism (sp??). That way at least I could hope for her blessing in the sale of my items and strike it rich. |
| Shuuya09-22-07, 07:01 AM | Ilmater is only a close mirror to Jesus if you're a cultural and religious ignoramus. This is true. I was only showing my logic as to why, as a DM, I wouldn't allow that reasoning. |
