Easy question for Planescape fans [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-19-07, 01:10 PM What outer-plane are Yugoloths native to? I see them listed in the boxed set as being native to several. :confused:

Also, Gereliths (sp?) are mentioned as being from one of those planes as well. I don't recall off-hand, but are they related to Yugoloths or are they a whole seperate species? And what book did they first appear in, I've found Yugoloths in the 2e Monstrous manual (the best monster source EVER) but couldn't find the Gereliths. Were they only in the Planescape setting?

This is why I'm asking - There are three planes between the Demons and Devils, so I'm thinking their should be three races, one for each, and right now I need one as the home plane for the Greater Oni that I'm doing for the Kara-Tur thread.

The Gereliths were renamed into Demodands, for whatever reason. They are described in Fiend Folio.

04-19-07, 03:27 PM Gehreleths are found in the Planescpae Monster Manuals. Their creator, Apomps, was originaly a Yugoloth (a baernaloth in all likelihood) with different viewpoints concerning chaos and purity.

He and his children were banished and their home plane is Carceri. They are not prisoners of the plane though. Apomps may be a deity or an evolved baernaloth. The lore does not reveal much about his current status.

Yugoloths hail from the Gray Waste and still have a presence there but they moved to Gehenna for some reason that was not made known. I think they can be considered natives of both those lower planes.

They first appeared on the Gray Waste (seemingly prior to there being any other lower planes). However since that time they've expanded into Gehenna and managed to tether themselves to that plane as well, and now their least kind emerge spontaneously from the raw essence of both planes. To fit their motif on the Waste, they're like an infection and they view it as something of a birthright to infect/colonize/dominate the trio of NE lower planes. They've hit a snag in Carceri however, though they're seeking to complete the Tower of Incarnate Pain to force their influence on the plane in much the same way that the Tower Arcane does in Gehenna. Problem is that the tower, miles wide and miles high, keeps getting destroyed every few thousand years by the demodands/gehreleths.

Which brings us to the next topic. :)

Gehreleths were the 2e/Planescape name for what in 1e were the Demodands. 3e renamed them demodands seemingly out of 1e nostalgia, and they've been largely ignored since then, which is unfortunate. Most of the details on the 'leths/demodands came from the various Planescape books, though I'm not absolutely attached to the 2e name, but it does roll off the tongue better and the contrast of 'loth and 'leth is a nice one (especially considering their history and linked origin).

The yugoloths and demodands/gehreleths share a common origin in the prehistory of the Gray Waste. Demodands were created by Apomps the Triple Aspected, a renegade baernaloth, while the yugoloths were the creations of the other baernaloths. According to the demodands, Apomps created them first, while the yugoloths claim that Apomps created the demodands second, in flawed and blasphemous imitation of the 'loths.

Apomps made the mistake of acting against his fellows wishes, and in creating children that were touched by chaos. Facing the fury of the other baernaloths, Apomps was exiled, or fled into self-imposed exile with his newly created children, forming the first incarnation of Carceri as a side effect of his flight. The demodands worship Apomps as if he were a god, and he might be a god on top of his status as a baernaloth, but we don't really know for certain. We do know that demodand clerics gain divine magic from him, but apomps has some powers within carceri that go completely above and beyond anything even a greater deity should be capable of.

The 'loths and 'leths --hate-- one another with a fury that makes the Blood War between the tanar'ri and baatezu look like a momentary and mild dispute. They've hated each other before the tanar'ri and baatezu existed, even before the obyriths and ancient baatorians existed. The worst disputes run within families, so to speak.
