Sune, the Goddess of Love!!! Well known for her ummmmm......sexually active female clerics/followers, but what of the male followers? Where do the male Sunites fit in? Are there any? What classes do they usually take? They're personality in general?

Well met,

a male Sunite appears in Heirs of Prophecy from Lisa Smedman. i remember him to be quite proficient in the sensual arts as well.
And Adon appearing in the Avatar Trilogy was also a Sunite.

... Must read more Lisa Smedman.

Also, note that Sune is NOT the goddess of physical sexuality or sensuality. She's the goddess of love and beauty, which is different.

Sharess is the deity of more carnal things. And the picture of her 2E Specialty Priest was actually a male. ;)

Heya,

Sune's clergy has typically been weighted more towards women than men, and higher up positions in the clergy are almost always occupied by women.

However, this has been changing recently as Sune has taken a leaf out of Tymora's book and her church has begun to sponsor more adventurers. Which, I suppose, has lead to more conversions to her faith.

The change towards a more balanced clergy won't happen overnight (these things tend to happen slowly, just as in the real world), the gender gap will close up somewhat - but I don't think it will ever actually reach parity.

(I will note here: there are several faiths that are probably balanced the other way - off the top of my head, Lathander, Tempus, Tyr, and other "hyper masculine" deities probably have more males than females in their clergy. In fact, it is even noted, at least in Tempus's entry in Faiths and Avatars, that his clergy tend to be human males - somehow this vanished between F&A and F&P, much to my annoyance. So it's not like this is unbalanced at all.)

I'm not so sure about Tyr's being male-dominated. Lathander, perhaps, because he very obviously represents male virility, as opposed to Chauntea being female fertility.

I always picked up on Tyr as a cross between the Norse Tyr and a bit of Athene, myself, in terms of portfolio and alignment.

Tempus's also makes sense. Females tend to be more likely to find ways to solving problems that don't directly lead to violence, as much as males. (Not saying one way is better than the other, that's just how things tend to go - at least in our world.)

Lathander and Chauntea do seem to be representative of that, though neither of them actually have fertility in their portfoilios! (Which I find odd, particularly for Chauntea!)

I guess I'm just too influenced by Tyr as a crusty old, one handed war god, as he is in the Norse mythos. ;) But you do have a point.

No, but they do go on all about it in their dogmas and such! Ah well. I never really was much for the "there must be an explicitely stated portfolio for EVERYTHING" in the Faerunian pantheon. I think some of the more powerful deities just 'happen' to pick up portfolios that are associated with their own. Lathander and Chauntea, both being Greater Powers, would be examples of such!

I guess I'm just too influenced by Tyr as a crusty old, one handed war god, as he is in the Norse mythos. But you do have a point.

Yeah... Yeah. That IS pretty much what he was, huh? Though some say he predates the archetype of Odin, since he was a variation on the Sky-God principle, which Odin very much was not. That's one of the things I always found the most interesting about the Norse pantheon... It's Indo-European, but does not have a supreme Sky-God ruler. At least, it didn't during the time of the writings from which Snorri derived his Eddas. Odin's a super-interesting pantheon head figure.

And Loki, too. Both had some surprisingly... Feminine tendencies.

Yes, I agree with you fully there.

What about the Red Knight, though?

Now, THERE'S the other part of Athene I was looking for! :)

I actually find the Red Knight really interesting. Most female divine figures were more of the chaotic, impassioned type (Istar/Inanna, Sekhmet), and Red Knight most certainly is not. The closest analogy I can find, as stated above, is Athene, who was a very organized, orderly warrior goddess of civilization and all.

And tactics... Come from civilization, perhaps?

Not quite, I know, but it's something of a fit. Red Knight (and Siamorphe) were always two of my favorite demideities.

I'd say that "sex" as a aspect to be connected with a deity in the Realms -- would be something shared between all three deities... Sune, Sharess... and perhaps even Lliira.

Sune is about how love can lead you to the truest path of your heart's desire... sometimes even if you don't know it yet yourself. Love doesn't immediately equal sex, at least... not in the truest relationships built upon the love that Sune champions... but it is the beginning point of a sexual aspect for the Realms.

Sharess, the Dancing Lady, represents the notion of fulfillment through hedonism or other bodily and spiritual pleasures... in this case, sex. But it's important to note that some of these experiences can only be enjoyed "to their fullest" (as is the dogma of Sharess) when you've built it up from something else. In the case of sex, this is love, and the notions Sune embodies. Sex with someone you love is infinitely more fulfilling and sensually pleasurable than when it is just something transitory... something that is satisfied at that very moment.

From which, we come to Lliira... she respects the liberty of love and freedom... which through sex... is the end point. The love you share with someone whereupon no care or frustration would dare disturb. It is built upon the fulfillment of sensual desire, through Sharess, which is the result of truest love... through Sune.

-- Whoa! Never let it be said that love and sex aren't complicated.
Old Sage

05-18-07, 08:52 PM
In fact, the entire concept of love, because even the noblest love can be "dirty" at times, could be embodied by the aspects which Sune supports.

I said above that "Sune is about how love can lead you to the truest path of your heart's desire... sometimes even if you don't know it yet yourself." Sometimes, we don't see the love we have for another staring us right in the face, because we're consumed with feelings that impose themselves upon the love we should be feeling -- feelings of hatred, of anger, or perhaps, even resentment. This changes the state of what could be a noble love, to something that is "dirty". If the love is meant to be, then it will endure. It will evolve. It will become your true path to your heart's desire.
GothicDan

It is such an important aspect that it should be in their portfolios. The only deity I can think of, off the top of my head, with it actually in their portfolio is Shiallia - and only as woodland fertility.

I think it's an oversight that just got perpetuated in 3e. ;)

Very interesting post! :)

I think Sune and Sharess in particular are often misunderstood, though, and oversimplified - which is doing them quite a disservice.

Sune is about Love, but she's also about Passion and Beauty. Love and Passion are not always about sex. You can love your mother/father/siblings, love a concept or idea, feel passionate about some endevour or ideal - she is the goddess of all these things (and just about anything else you can think of connected to her portfolio). Beauty, too, is more than just how a man or a woman looks, it can be about a person's soul, how they are on the inside is just as important as their physical form... Beauty can be found in everything, art, music, literature, and nature - just to name a few. (Personally, just on that basis, I think Sune should be almost as powerful as Mystra, simply because she embodies such universal concepts.)

Sharess is about more than just sexual pleasure. She is about pleasure period. The pleasure you get drinking a fine wine, listening to music, relaxing in a warm spring, sleeping in the sunlight (like a cat) - all of these things fill the senses and fulfill the hedonist.
GothicDan

(Personally, just on that basis, I think Sune should be almost as powerful as Mystra, simply because she embodies such universal concepts.)

A LOT of deities embody such universal concepts, though. Loviatar and pain - everyone feels pain. Lliira and happiness - everyone wants to feel happiness. Oghma - every skill that someone has, every word they speak, every communication, is an extension of knowledge.

What really energizes Mystra so much is the Weave itself, and how it's connected to everything. Like the Force!

I think Milil and Sune should have a fling. They'd make beautiful children.

Sune's dogma does acknowledge the reality that not all love is of the romantic kind... and that warm friendship and deep admiration for others -- which can be 'types' of love, though not necessarily romantic, shared between friends and family, or even between objects and/or concepts -- are just as much important to the faith, as is the concept of true and romantic love.

He had changed by the end of the Avatar trilogy. As for a big prize, he did end up Mystra's Patriarch (aka pontiff) on Faerun for a while, and while Cyric turned him mad and made him temporarily false/faithless, he was forgiven and dwells in Dweomerheart.

The novels certainly portray her as vapid, and more like Sharess than the personification of romantic love and beauty.

Sune hasn't really had much of a presence in the novels... But most gods get a raw deal there, anyway.

Lord Karsus

I like Savras a lot, but I think 'Time' is a little too big for him, right now. Then again, Cyric got boosted from completely average mortal to uber deity... Savras at least gained his divinity directly through his own power and divine patronage of Mystra.

I'd love to see him start getting along with Labelas more, and perhaps learn the secrets of chronomancy from him.

That'd be a neat portfolio for him, actually - chronomancy. And then, maybe, in time, time. (Ha.)

Thats why there are a lot more gay dwarves then anyone knows...after all, unless you are a dwarf, how can you tell? *chuckles*

And also: When it's gotten to the point you can tell, does it matter?;) Rarrr
Dwarves are naturally bisexual, otherwise they wouldn't procreate percentage wise enough to keep the species viable:D

Well...they also think a "hot date" has something to do with spending the night in the forge....DEFINATELY something wrong with de dwarves.....

I love smithing and take advantage of any oppertunity to play with anything that produces an extreme, and dangerous, amount of heat. Thus, I too find spending the night in a forge to be a nice option. There's also all those tools....;) If I wasn't a lawfully chaotic schizophrenic human, I'd be a dwarf....
Think of it as extreme fireside romance. The fireplace just happens to be much larger (more romantic?) and there's more options for foreplay. I think that's how dwarves see it, on those occasions they think of romance anyway.

Mechanized thingies... Psch.

Ladies, the greatest invention since the Khae-stick... The Dancing Khae-Stick of Pleasure!

You know, I can think of sooooooo many things to say right here. But if I did, this whole thread would be moved to the Mature Forum.

I think I can get away with this though...

Two words...

Roleplaying and sex, and sexual relationships, go hand in hand to me. Sex, lust, love, the pursuit of these things, and the like, are all hallmarks of what make people, people. And remember we're roleplaying people here, not little sprites mindlessly running around throwing Arcane Explosions. ;)

What Dan said.

And you don't peruse other parts of this forum, do you? Try looking at the Mature Topics forum in the D&D Styles section some time. (Though you need to be 17+ years old to get access, which means you need to have put your DoB in your profile.)

Heya,

Oh, it wouldn't be intentional blindness. Sharess, at least, is a bit of an exhibitionist. ;)

However, mortal eyes, looking upon divine beauty... Might be just more than ordinary optic nerves can handle.

Unless you were invited to watch, then they might "turn down the brightness" just for you. :D

-How soon might we become blinded? :D :embarrass

Actually, would not being blinded be the perfect excuse to observe by touch? *no innocent smilie*

Imagine the dwarf orgies. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

No, lets not.

I prefer Corellon of course, but also follow Bast.

(none of this Sharess rewrite stuff for me)
GothicDan

05-26-07, 02:32 PM
I uber like Sharess, largely because she's absorbed an Elven aspect.

The original Bast wasn't nearly as hedonistic in Egyptian myth as Sharess. She was primary a commoner deity (in the role of serving Re/the nobility and getting a good life), whereas Bes was more of the noble god of true hedonism or decadence in any form.

Sharess ads an aspect of more Epicurean hedonism to the original Bast.
ElberethSilverleaf

05-26-07, 03:01 PM
The Sharess aspect does add that aspect, but I still prefer that cat headed implacable foe of evil.
GothicDan

05-26-07, 03:45 PM
You mean Nobanion? ;)

I love Nobanion like woah. One of my top favoritest gods...

Along with Myrkul, Jergal, Shar, Talos, Mystra, Lathander, Corellon, Labelas, Darahl Firecloak, Sharess, Lurue, Siamorphe, the Red Knight, Oghma..
ElberethSilverleaf

05-26-07, 03:57 PM
Yes but Nobanion is LG, where Bast is CG, more in line with my ethical leanings.
Plus he kinda reminds me of Aslan too much.

And of course add the god Priapus to my devotions.
Like the Romans did, everyone should have Priapic chimes hanging on the 4 corners of their homes for good luck.
GothicDan

05-26-07, 04:04 PM
Phallic territory markers were also used in the classical world.

Oh yeah, I forgot Kossuth. He's one of my favs...

As to Nobanion... He was largely Aslan. I would consider him a Faerunian projection of Aslan, and would probably stat Aslan as a Lesser or Intermediate multispheric God, son of the Emperor Over the Sea (Greater God).
