| Amon Hok09-03-07, 03:42 AM | So i have been tossing the idea around what if the gods of FR suddenly came to this world and set up a worship base...Who would rise in power who would fall in power? With our modern times which deities would need to adapt here to survive? P.S. Please i am not interested in hearing if G-d would allow this or not, So lets keep the big man out of this. |
| GothicDan09-03-07, 12:39 PM | I really can't even fathom the effects this would have, or how it would play out. There's too many variables. First of all, they'd all probably die immediately unless they already had worshipers here. |
| MarkusTay6309-03-07, 02:12 PM | America would probably lob nukes at them. Overgod Bush doesn't like anyone with more power then him. :P |
| MarkHall09-03-07, 05:07 PM | First of all, they'd all probably die immediately unless they already had worshipers here. Tyr, at least, already does. I imagine the Mielikki does, as well; Loviatar, Oghma, and Silvanus are debatable... the one for her disposition, the two for their difference from traditional representations. Tyche/Tymora and Beshaba might also find support... and I have no doubt, knowing the origin of Waukeen, that Waukeen would THRIVE in the United States. She's worshiped every day. The Mulhorandi pantheon would likewise have a large degree of support immediately upon arrival. |
| Amon Hok09-03-07, 11:57 PM | Baring the fact they have no worshippers here, I was curious who would rise in power, who would fall in power if they were here in our modern times as deities would their be a shake up in the pantheon? Would the Lord of Song find himself a demi-god or would he rise to intermediate, who would need to alter their portfolio to survive here? Would Mystra fall to demi-goddess if she brought the weave here? or would she stay a greater goddess? |
| MarkHall09-04-07, 12:16 AM | I'm afraid I don't entirely understand your question, then. Do you mean "If the Faerunian Pantheon replaced modern religion entirely, how would power levels within the pantheon change?" If that's the case, I imagine that Gond and Waukeen would be Greater Powers, Oghma would remain so, Mystra, Azuth, and their associated powers would drop to demipowers, The Triad would remain at their current levels (many hold their ideals important, even if they don't practice them), and Shar and Loviatar would likely find a slight bump from people who think darkness is "fun". |
| BadCatMan09-04-07, 01:16 AM | Red Knight would be the biggest deity of war, as modern warfare is all about tactics and strategy, at least in the 'western' world. In other areas, Hoar would grow as another deity of war, as oftentimes it tends to be about ***-for-tat vengeance, and Garagos would make a come-back. Deneir would pick up the internet portfolio, but be driven mad. Milil would become a god of celebrities. |
| Spelldancer09-04-07, 01:17 AM | Sune would have an increase... after all passion and love are important. Look at all the online dating sites. Sharess I think would get a minor boost as well, from well.. lustful people. Selune possible would become a greater power, but more for her role as a patron of women, than goddess of the moon. Chauntea would still be the most popular. After all we need food. |
| GothicDan09-04-07, 11:51 AM | Are we assuming all of Earth worshiping the single Faerunian pantheon? Because there are BILLIONS of us, so the potential faith pool would be much larger. |
| DarkSongKnight09-04-07, 12:42 PM | Lliira would be working toward the downfall of Bush! Liberation! Woot! |
| Lord Karsus09-04-07, 03:19 PM | Lliira would be working toward the downfall of Bush! Liberation! Woot! -DSK, you are an otherwise good poster, but, I'm sorry, that was one of the stupidest things I've read here by an actual poster- and by actual poster, I mean someone who regularly contributes in a meaningful way around here. |
| GothicDan09-04-07, 04:49 PM | I agree, to a point. There is absolutely not a single fiber of my being that likes Bush, but I really tire of people - in real life, online, or what have you - demonizing him. Decrying moral righteousness on one side is just as bad as doing the same to the other. |
| DarkSongKnight09-05-07, 12:04 PM | Hey, I wasn't demonizing the man... I merely think he's a bit too stiff-collared. I also realize not everything is his fault. Perhaps it'd help if I told everyone that I see Lliira as a liberal (i.e. liberation/liberty, it is a part of her portfolio). I was going for the Law v.s. Chaos, not the Good v.s. Evil, as we all know that the latter part of the scale doesn't work in the real world... Example (warning: my opinions): Republicans might call upon more Lawful deities, such as Tyr, Hoar, and Torm, whereas many Democrats might call upon slightly more Chaotic deities. Or it could be better defined in our world as "tradition" verses "new ways." Also, if the Faerunian deities did come into our world, religion as we know it would fall apart. There would be some adherents, but if the Faerunian deities made themselves known through displays of power and such, many would follow them, as they now would have "proof" that the gods exist. Another interesting theory: DnD and Forgotten Realms fans and experts would inherit the leadership of the earth, as they would be the only ones able to make sense of things. Also, since each Faerunian deity is able to prove that they are real, and that some of them oppose each other, there would be HUGE and DEADLY faith-based wars, in time. I have a feeling Theocracies would become very popular quite suddenly. |
| boydwsmith09-05-07, 12:55 PM | Sharess I think would get a minor boost as well, from well.. lustful people. ___________________________ I think she would get a HUGE boost. She is after all the goddess of hedonistic joyful pleasure. And I would be right there signing up to be one of her devoted clergy. :D Of course I would very soon end up very old and die real quick, but I would have a grin on my face that not all the postmortem make up in the world could remove. BWS |
| GothicDan09-05-07, 01:27 PM | DarkSong, you're forgiven. ;) Though I consider myself an atheist centrist and very heavily follow more lawful dogmas... I completely feel I'm a rarity. |
| Lord Karsus09-05-07, 06:43 PM | DarkSong, you're forgiven. ;) -Yeah, I'll let you off the hook. Your explanation made sense. When I saw you post, I was like, "Liberation? Liberation from what? I don't get it. Oh, wait, a thinly veiled political statement that doesn't belong". But, you've redeemed yourself. ;) |
| MarkusTay6309-06-07, 09:10 PM | I think what I said was far worse, so how come no one got mad at me? BTW, the Vedic Pantheon IS active in the Malatra region of FR, and is STILL worshipped by millions in the RW, so there would be no difference there at all. Sharess would be the #1 god of Hedony, and Paris Hilton would be her High Priestess. Deneir might get the Internet, but Lolth would grab the World Wide Web. :P |
| SmartPaladin09-07-07, 02:40 AM | Lolth would grab the World Wide Web. :P Boo. Hiss. :nonono: Gond would get a nice power boost I think, as would Oghma. Even Illmatar and Loviatar might get some love, from the S&M crowd. :P |
| Dimensional_Drifter09-07-07, 09:56 AM | I imagine that the entire Earth would experience turmoil and conflict beyond anything that has happened as of yet or if not, the deities would claim to be deities from different religions of Earth or something. Although, I think that the deities of the realms that would benefit most would be Wuakeen, Gond, those of Knowledge, and those of War. The Triad and Bane as well (all of this ignoring population differences between Earth and Toril), not too many would benefit too much. But yeah, I don't see how religion on Earth would fall apart immediatly if avatars of these deities would show up. Oh well, it really doesn't matter. I just wanted to post something now that I'm back home and able to participate on the boards again. Humanity tends to organize in certain ways, I don't see chaos embraced by too many people. I believe that more than anything, people have a need for order, even if one denies it. Religion is something that in my opinion was created by human societies to help direct everyone to a same set of beliefs and thus conform to similar ways of thinking. Religion is powerful because so many will simply have faith in what is taught to them and be afraid for their souls (and in some cases their lives) to ever question it. I'm not a religious person, but i find the effects and development of religions over history an interesting topic. In many ways religion on Earth equates to government. Sorry off topic. I hope I don't offend anyone. |
| captaincarot09-08-07, 08:05 AM | immediate and total annihilation through nuclear war. if gods were proven then an afterlife would also be proven and bush would press the button about 2 minutes after he realised this. though with a bit of luck the bloke is so dumb he might be out of power before it sank in |
| 1 ton ghost09-08-07, 01:45 PM | are you assuming there is clerical magic? divine internetion? i guess it doesn't matter, w/ all the religious fervor these days you're looking most realistically at several hundred jihads, crusades, and all manner of religious warfare. ultimately if marshal law wasn't enforced, total anarchy, doomsday cults, mass suicides, etc. not many ppl could deal w/ such a monumental religious/philosophical upheaval. that's not to mention deicide... they (gods) would immediately fall to fighting given the 6 billion potential worshipers that aren't necessarilly in their pews. that is, their divine power would be drastically reduced until they could get converts and bring their strength back up if applying typical gaming mechanics. Gond would probably have a huge surge given all the tech floating around. i mean, space flight, lasers, internet... Bane could harness alot of power in many dictatorships, though i suspect the ayatollah's might have a thing to say Illmater, this is probably the toughest one, would come into conflict w/ Christianity given the similar nature to Jesus though his LG outlook would usher in a terribly convuluted diplomacy w/ overtures of understanding/compassion. all nonhuman deities perish. i mean, it's earth, you know...maybe, an extreme maybe, little ppl might take up some halfling worship, etc. Mask would get alot of power by accident i'm sure. these are decadent and tricky times. look at all the lies and intrigue. just one airing of the news would up his rank God, this could just go on. you've asked a BIG question w/ infinite answers, none of them dogmatic or easy to explain... |
| Arbourean09-09-07, 08:24 AM | A very interesting topic. First, for the sake of argument, I'll assume current rw religions never existed, and Earth was created by Shar and Selune (I hate Ao) Pretty much all of the current greater powers would be just that, with the exception of Mystra, who would be replaced by Gond. Greater: Tempus: While I agree that tactics are far more important in modern warfare than in the past, soldiers are still needed to win wars. Oghma: Everything starts with an idea. That wouldn't change no matter where he was worshiped. Bane: There's no shortage of dictatorships on Earth. Chauntea: Everyone needs food, and most of the world's population are farmers. Cyric: Illusion treachery and lies? No shortage of that either. Shar: Everyone has dark secrets. Tyr: Most countries at least give lip service to the rule of law. Talos: I'm sure the people of NO would have prayed more fervently to him if they knew he sent Katrina their way. Selune: The moon has vast impact and importance. That would not change. (Personally, I feel she should be a GP in the Realms now) Anyway, in a nutshell I think the Faerunian Pantheon would do quite well on Earth; there'd be changes in their respective ranks, and many demigods wouldn't exist at all. |
| GothicDan09-09-07, 10:28 AM | Uh. If the world was created by Selune and Shar, it wouldn't be the same world as it is today... And most likely Mystryl would have been created.. And she would have controlled magic and technology (as she was originally the goddess of invention, too, I believe, and creativity, etc.)... So you really can't go at it from that view point. |

| Amon Hok09-09-07, 11:40 PM | I beleive the Lord of Travels would be given a huge increase due to the fact everyone drives, and travels. Wukeen would get a huge jump too. |
| Arbourean09-10-07, 12:07 AM | Uh. Fair enough. I made the argument mostly to counter the "they'd all dwindle and die from lack of worshipers if there were just plunked into our modern world" argument. |
| Lord Mortanius09-10-07, 02:03 AM | Velsharoon would probably gain the portfolio of genetics. |
| Zarreth_Nessad09-15-07, 04:32 PM | Only thing I have to add is this: even if they get here with 0 followers, they wouldn't die. They'd just be stuck back at DvR 0 and in a physical body (avatar-like). |
| ElberethSilverleaf09-15-07, 05:20 PM | If the Seldarine or Corellon would change me into an elf I would not only become a worshipper but also a cleric, either of an "all faiths" Seldarine or just Corellon. |
| CamwynF10-01-07, 10:28 PM | You could expect "mix&match" pantheons, as none of the gods, with the exception of maybe Chauntea, have portfolios wide enough to be suitable for monolotry (belief in multiple gods, but exclusive worship of only one). Henotheism is much more likely (worship of multiple gods within a pantheon, with attention given to one at a time, depending on circumstances). Example: Military officers might have Red Knight* as a patron, but burn incense for Waukeen**, Chauntea, Tempus, Illmater***, Selune**** and Sune as part of either an official or unofficial "national pantheon". The Establishment Clause likely goes out the window, as the advantages of cutting a deal with the Powers are too obvious. Be interesting to see if Corellon (and the rest of the Seldarine) and Yondalla can develop a market. Eilistraee has the advantage of having hot women dancing in the moonlight. Naked. In the Army, we'd call that a "recruiting aid". For some reason, I always picture her rituals as having a Techno/Trance soundtrack anyway... The evil gods (and the "slightly naughty" gods, too) have to throttle back on their Standard Operating Procedure. Talona and Bane, in particular, as they don't have real sympathetic portfolios, and modern society doesn't tolerate the hijinks they pull in Faerun. Shar might reinvent herself to appeal to the Gothy set, dropping the "Chtulhu-lite/Delete the World" act. Goddess of Night and Darkness? *-due to the way War is approached in the West (and Westernized areas), Red Knight probably ends up with the War/Soldier portfolio, with Tempus either not making the cut or being reduced to a niche market (nonprofessional combatants). **-Waukeen basically becomes a Greater Deity overnight. ***-Illmater has built-in appeal, with all the free cure X wounds spells. ****-Selune basically picking up the free Postfeminist/GirlPower portfolio, bringing her easily up into the Greater bracket. I imagine that, in the West, she'd have the largest individual cult, with just about every female burning her some joss now and then. |
| Arbourean10-01-07, 11:03 PM | Oh I doubt the evil gods would have much trouble gaining worshipers. There are plenty of dictatorships (Bane), rampant diseases in the developing world, and Talona would be placated to bring relief; and there are fanatics willing to strap bombs to their chest and walk into a crowded marketplace. They'd be your Cyricists. |
| CamwynF10-02-07, 12:08 AM | Oh I doubt the evil gods would have much trouble gaining worshipers. They'd be your Cyricists. But they'd still need to retool their SOPs. Even al-Quaeda has a positive platform, in the view of it's target audience, anyway. Bane isn't going to get many recruits until he ponies up with the benefits*. Ditto with Shar. Lots of people want power/authority/respect/revenge, but not many want to erase the world. Certainly not enough to keep a Deity above the Demipower bracket. Also, nothing brings down the heat like human sacrifices. Likely Bane retools himself into a neoFascist, TV-friendly, concept. The idea of "taking over and fixing things.....For The Greater Good" is a fairly widespread meme. People are less likely to placate Talona than petition Illmater to kick her teeth in. Unless Talona presents herself as the Goddess who prevents plague....for a price. That's much more likely to succeed. *-AQ and Hezbollah pay off the families of suicide bombers. |
| Mirtek10-03-07, 11:30 AM | As deity of lies, intrigue and deception Cyric would also play a major role in regard to most politicans and political parties :D |
| Zsych10-05-07, 12:38 AM | If the FR gods come over, and the local gods who already have worship would thus also have power. I'm not sure the Jews, Christians and Muslims would effectively be worshipping one god in common, but I expect it would be so, meaning that it would be one super-giant god, who would never let these people come in. ... The various other gods would probably be weak and not really able to stop any intruders(assuming that the invading gods kept their power from home) Also... I'm not sure that the gods could communicate much with humans directly, unless we're assuming avatars for initial communication. If we assume massively powerful/magical avatars, I think that even with the Jewish, Christian.. god being around. If the interloper gods weren't repulsed then.. in time(decades at the least), people with natures not naturally catered to by the main religions of our world would take up these religions if the god was visible and capable of showing miracles(and granting such power to his servants). The FR gods might even become dominant since I don't think that most followers of the existing religions of our world actually care much about them. Having gods that represent their own natures might work much better. ... And yes I agree that there would probably be wars among the various groups(violent and intolerant people, we are :)). Deicides might also be a reasonable expectation. Don't think that FR gods would take too well to being nuked :) Overall, I think it would be interesting times, if something like that happened :) |
| Storm_Silverhand10-05-07, 02:30 AM | Heya, If the FR gods come over, and the local gods who already have worship would thus also have power. That doesn't necessarily follow. Just because the Realms deities sprang into being in our world doesn't mean that God (et al) would suddenly also become real (or more active if you're faithful already). Some deities might, but that would be because their Realmsian counterparts had "returned" - like Tyr, Mielikki, the Mulhorandi pantheon, and others (not going to list them all). However, If the deity in question did suddenly gain power and became more active (or real, depending on your standpoint), then I think the Realms gods would be doomed before they started, since there are already so many adherents of the deity in question... But it's a paradox if that could only happen with Realms deities present. (I know that's confusing... :help:) I'm not sure the Jews, Christians and Muslims would effectively be worshipping one god in common, but I expect it would be so, meaning that it would be one super-giant god, who would never let these people come in. They should be, since their God/Allah/JHVH all came from the same roots. Think of the different names as aliases for the same deity. But as I said, just because the Realms gods suddenly came into our world, doesn't mean that the Judeo-Christian/Muslim deity suddenly becomes more active or real (depending on your take of the situation right now). ... The various other gods would probably be weak and not really able to stop any intruders(assuming that the invading gods kept their power from home) Forgotten Realms deities not only get power from worshipers, but also from their portfolios. That would probably provide enough power for them to gain a foothold. Mystra might be in trouble, though, unless she brought magic and the Weave with her... (Which raises an interesting question - the reason electronics don't work in the Realms is because physics works differently there... the question is, is that a function of the Weave, or is it some strange function of Abeir-Toril? And if it is a function of the Weave, what would happen to Earth technology if the Weave suddenly came into existence?) Also... I'm not sure that the gods could communicate much with humans directly, unless we're assuming avatars for initial communication. Why not? They could easily send dreams, oracles, visions, miracles, and other manifestations. Though manifesting an avatar would definitely help. I'm not sure I understand this bit. The FR gods might even become dominant since I don't think that most followers of the existing religions of our world actually care much about them. While I don't agree that most people don't really care much about their religions, I do suspect that in the face of "real divine power" (in quotes deliberately, I don't want to offend anyone), many would abandon those faiths that don't have visible benefits... But probably not all. I'm sure the extremists would survive and try to claim the new deities are aspects of the Great Adversary (Satan or whatever evil deity is represented in their religion), and we might find a rather bloody war on our hands, particularly in North America and the Middle East, and possibly some parts of Europe and Asia as well. Deicides might also be a reasonable expectation. Don't think that FR gods would take too well to being nuked :) So an Avatar is killed by a nuke... big whoop. I doubt anyone could kill an actual god with a nuke (not unless they were very powerful and were somehow able to get the nuke to the deity's plane.) Overall, I think it would be interesting times, if something like that happened :) I wouldn't have too much trouble... I can just treat Tymora as an aspect of Tyche/Fortuna, and happily convert. ;) Unless I discovered and could use magic, in which case I might end up turning to Mystra. :lightbulb (Actually, to be honest, I think I'd probably venerate a number of them, rather than just one... unless I was called to be a cleric...) |
| Zsych10-05-07, 02:50 AM | If we assume that we are dealing with a D&D style situation of gods created by people's faith and strengthened by it, then even if the Abrahamic god hadn't previously existed, people's combined faith would be enough to bring it around. Of course, people not really expecting their prayers to be answered might be why they aren't answered by this god... wouldn't mean that it couldn't act if it wanted to. As for If we assume massively powerful/magical avatars, I think that even with the Jewish, Christian.. god being around. If the interloper gods weren't repulsed then.. in time(decades at the least), people with natures not naturally catered to by the main religions of our world would take up these religions if the god was visible and capable of showing miracles(and granting such power to his servants). I just mean that with visible divine beings around. Money oriented people for example, might indeed be more interested in Waukeen, and start converting to her worship, rather than continue worshipping a god who's doctrine they only give a partial nod to anyway, and who gives them nothing that they can see. As for avatars being killed... Well, if you go by the novels then avatar destruction isn't good for a god. Otherwise yes, you need to get to the diety's home plane... but there is no shortage of rival evil dieties that would at least help take down good ones(or perhaps the reverse). |
| Storm_Silverhand10-05-07, 08:15 AM | Heya, If we assume that we are dealing with a D&D style situation of gods created by people's faith and strengthened by it, then even if the Abrahamic god hadn't previously existed, people's combined faith would be enough to bring it around. Of course, people not really expecting their prayers to be answered might be why they aren't answered by this god... wouldn't mean that it couldn't act if it wanted to. In the face of active gods, I think their god would be dim witted if he didn't change his act (no offense intended). Though I'm sure there are many adherents of those faiths that might question why their god had suddenly seen fit to answer their prayers after thousands of years of silence. I just mean that with visible divine beings around. Money oriented people for example, might indeed be more interested in Waukeen, and start converting to her worship, rather than continue worshipping a god who's doctrine they only give a partial nod to anyway, and who gives them nothing that they can see. Have you ever heard of Prosperity Gospel? Waukeen would be competing with some Judeo-Christian religions a little more directly than many other deities. As for avatars being killed... Well, if you go by the novels then avatar destruction isn't good for a god. Otherwise yes, you need to get to the diety's home plane... but there is no shortage of rival evil dieties that would at least help take down good ones(or perhaps the reverse). It does hurt them, but not overly. It takes a while to make a new avatar, and if you're a lower level power then you might suffer setbacks on the basis that you can't manifest an avatar for a while... But it doesn't kill them. (Except if you've been trapped in your avatar form by the Overgod...) |
| The WarOverlord10-09-07, 08:00 AM | So i have been tossing the idea around what if the gods of FR suddenly came to this world and set up a worship base...Who would rise in power who would fall in power? With our modern times which deities would need to adapt here to survive? P.S. Please i am not interested in hearing if G-d would allow this or not, So lets keep the big man out of this. Oooh, considering a lot of current Human religions are supossedly using the same "Monodielistic' ideaslism that caused the fall of Emipires and enlightenment into "Dark Ages" between their Racial Purity extermination wars of other races (Elves,Trolls,Dwarves,Sprites, etc) as "demons" and their gods as "demons" and then after all the Elves and Orcs and such were wiped off the face of the Earth Humans turned on their own "demons" in the various religions until what they now have left is what they have left...that is going to be a Factor. I mean there is is still niche worhiping of other gods in other Culture so I agree that the Greek gods might still have enough believers to give them stregth but doing something like going into a greek Nightclub as say you are a god is going to get a few weird stares at the very least (I belive there is a Greek Gods Return D&D thingy known as "THe OLypians" were Ares is a Mercenary, Aphroditie is a Super Model, blah, blah cause they have no real power anymore...lol) Tyr is Norse I believe and Lovitar is Finnish....I could see Lovitar being like the goddess of the Emos and such. Actually mayte the Crying od would be more suitible for such cry babies...lol But in the end there could be problems between the Splintered "one God" Faiths and the "Usurper Alien invasion Cults" to the point where not only do the religions worshiping, what you say?,... "G-d'... Might unite long enough to blast the "cults" and their "Alien invader leaders"(not "gods" as they are claiming to be...lets shoot them with machine guns or nuke them to prove it) to "Kingdom Come" Yep. definately some kind of warring over faith (gee, how is that different from any other point in History?) |
| Ascaron10-09-07, 09:47 AM | I had this idea for quite a while so I am quite prepared I think for the answer... ;) - Cyric: With so many murders and intrigue's going on he would love the earth as it stands. And would be worshipped quite well by all kind of Camorra personal! - Bane: Well as the current sitiuation in Birma/Burma/Myanmar (and elsewhere in the whole world) shows tyranny is a aspect well entertained in the RL Realms. - Gargauth: Maybe the winner over all gods with all this big part of corruption going on and as a former devil he might get all those now-a-days new age satanists under his banner :P - Waukeen: I agree with the others around who say or just think that she would be the mightiest goddess of all. Nothing in our world receives more attention than money. - Shar: Would be number one to worship in every FBI, CIA, MI5, etc... organisation. And many people have secrets in our modern world as well so... I guess she would be at some kind of pole position among the gods. - Milil: Oh dear, the lord of song would be quite ****** I think, many worshipers, since never have there been this much musicians around. BUT _so_ damn many bad ones... I think he would lay himself to rest as soon as he starts his radio. - Oghma: This guy would be a winner, he would gain admin-rights at wikipedia.org for sure. And he would love the internet, and since we all worship this media in one way or another: he would go with it ;) - Mystra: Poor lady of magic, since there are only tricksters and not a single wizard on earth since Merlin (TM) himself... Maybe if she would BRING magic to this world, but only then I see chances for her. - Silvanus: Grand-Father Oak would be ******. He would have worshipers of course, since doing everything "eco" is just the actual fashion. But the destruction of the rainforests and and and... that would hardly please him. - Malar: Muharhar... this monkey is finally in the place he belongs -> the zoo. No place for him in this world. - Helm: Mr.Police is in the house, he would surely get some support of the officers and judges, but would haggle with Tyr for them. - Hoar: Oh damn it, this one would receive also a great measure of prayers - at least from me :D Everytime some of my players wreck my campaign, I am praying for poetric retribution! - Sune: With all this flippant girls and guys around the world she would surely be appreciated. - Umberlee: Oh I guess in the coastal regions where the people are plagued by hurricanes, tzunamis, floods, etc... would put a thought to worship Umberlee. I could continue this post on and on, but I guess it would be nicer to spare you the ugly details... :D Best Regards, Ascaron |

Knowledge is the prime mode of power ever since the Scientific Revolution, or so I think. Mystra cannnot exist without the weave, for she is in essence the force that drives the weave. She instantly dies, or reverse, she creates the weave in RW, which would set chaos and nearly destroy every single established social system other than tribalism - We're too tied to science to come out unscathed. |

I'm exploring this in a series of stories I'm writing at the moment (magic in the Real World, not Realms Deities in the Real World), and I don't see any reason why Science and Magic can't get along and work side by side. Of course it all depends on exactly how magic is introduced. In the stories I'm writing it's a slow process - the first mages started to discover their abilities about 20 years previously, and have had to learn everything by themselves. Science has been studying this phenomenon, and has only just been able to isolate a gene they think might cause it... So the government has started a registry, and it's law for everyone to be tested (for that gene - or magically since mages can also pick up on magical latents). If magic was to suddenly burst into the scene all at once (and more corrupt/evil individuals got it right off), things might be different. |

| Ramenth10-10-07, 02:13 AM | So i have been tossing the idea around what if the gods of FR suddenly came to this world and set up a worship base...Who would rise in power who would fall in power? With our modern times which deities would need to adapt here to survive? P.S. Please i am not interested in hearing if G-d would allow this or not, So lets keep the big man out of this. There's a bunch of Sharrans on my college campus, apparently. Or at least a few. They had a live journal group and did stuff. It was amusing. |
