| Rasputen_Bel_Kuhr03-01-07, 06:50 AM | hi okay I did this thread awhile ago but it got "accidentally" deleted so I'm hoping the people who originally posted could repost their ideas for converting spell names for a more realmy feel. Also not interested in reasons why i don't have to rename them I WANT to rename them. Thanks |
| Karsus the Mad03-01-07, 09:01 AM | Netheril: Empire of Magic, which can be downloaded for free on the Wizards site list Netherese names for common spells in the PHB. It's 2e, but it shouldn't be difficult to figure out which 3.5 spell they correlate with. For example, magic missle was known as General Mattik's Missles. There's Aksa's Disintegration (disintegrate), Vohm's Lightning, etc. |
| Stigger03-01-07, 09:22 AM | Pages from the Mages was pretty good as well for some Faerun flavored naming conventions. Might think about checking out the 2e Wizard's/Priest's Spell Compendiums for some other ideas if you can find a pdf or something for them. |
| Faraer03-02-07, 06:38 AM | The Player's Handbook spells are assumed to have been in general use for centuries, such that the original creators' names have mostly worn off. There are many variants of each such standard spell, and neither is the nomenclature standardized: thus unseen servant is also called servant unseen, magic missile may be called battlestrike, flaming sphere instead Sphere of Flame, and so on. These names vary geographically, linguistically, by fashions of mage lore, and according to actual variants of the spells. The Netheril: Empire of Magic spell titles feature slade's feeble and unRealmsian character names; and not all those spells originated in Netheril. |
| Lord Karsus03-02-07, 12:06 PM | The Netheril: Empire of Magic spell titles feature slade's feeble and unRealmsian character names; and not all those spells originated in Netheril. -It boggles the mind. According to him, the Netherese were the first to create the Magic Missile. I guess the Imaskari, or one of the Ancient Elven Empires lacked that basic, knowledge, eh? |
| lavekkia03-02-07, 01:46 PM | Probably they simply claimed to invent them... many great wizards claim to have invented a round object with hole in the center only to discover that the wheel is a common sight elsewhere (i hope you get what i mean ;) ) |
| Soltares03-02-07, 06:53 PM | In my opinion Magic Missile is just too darn good a spell to assign to some faceless chump. I'd rule that it was created my the wizard who later went on to be known as Azuth, and every wizard in the Realms since has tried to match that level of perfection. |
| Stigger03-02-07, 07:15 PM | Not a bad idea there Soltares... not a bad idea at all. |

According to him, the Netherese were the first to create the Magic Missile. I guess the Imaskari, or one of the Ancient Elven Empires lacked that basic, knowledge, eh? Not really. We know that Netheril (or more accurately, the Nether Scrolls) formed the basis for modern magic in Faerun, so why not have the most common spells in use be of Netherese origin? It certainly doesn't mean other civilizations hadn't created similar magical effects. It simply means that the Netherese versions of these spells are the ones that are most prevalently used, and again, why not, since their tradition is the foundation of modern magic use via the Netherese Diaspora? Probably they simply claimed to invent them... many great wizards claim to have invented a round object with hole in the center only to discover that the wheel is a common sight elsewhere (i hope you get what i mean ) That's another plausible answer. In my opinion Magic Missile is just too darn good a spell to assign to some faceless chump. I'd rule that it was created my the wizard who later went on to be known as Azuth, and every wizard in the Realms since has tried to match that level of perfection. Except that Magic Missle, even by going with the Netherese General that claimed to invent it predates Azuth by a thousand years, yeah, I guess you could say that. |
| Krash03-02-07, 08:11 PM | The Netherese were great self-promoters.:) -- George Krashos |
| Lord Karsus03-02-07, 08:38 PM | -Heh, here's a little blurb on the General: Matick was believed to have slaughtered over 25,000 orcs, 35,000 goblins, 2,000 trolls, and about 5,000 halflings and elves (whom he hated feverishly). The general was also said to have been responsible for the creation of three spells that eventually became armor, magic missile, and shield, but sages believe he actually had these spells commissioned. -So, he didn't develop those spells, after all, it seems... The Netherese were great self-promoters.:) -- George Krashos -By the way, everyone, I just want to promote my new book, Memoirs of a Tripartite Soul...;) |
| Rasputen_Bel_Kuhr03-02-07, 08:41 PM | Yes this is good Could someone list those laeral sword thingies spells - I think the Simbul did it last time |

| Karsus the Mad03-03-07, 06:48 PM | The Netherese were great self-promoters. -- George Krashos Nah. They were just really good at charming people at the Patent Office. -So, he didn't develop those spells, after all, it seems... Eh, eh. It says sages believe he had them commissioned:P By who? Another Netherese of course:D Will it be a trilogy ? Can there be any doubt? And a fourth one will be forthcoming as well... |
| Lord Karsus03-03-07, 11:34 PM | Eh, eh. It says sages believe he had them commissioned:P By who? Another Netherese of course:D -Probably was a mad Gnome...;) Can there be any doubt? And a fourth one will be forthcoming as well... -It shall be a four-part trilogy!! :D |

| Stigger03-04-07, 10:12 AM | 2e sourcbook detailing several famous wizard tomes... good stuff, provided tremendous amounts of fluff and several useful spells... though the spells would require a bit of work to convert over. |
| Karsus the Mad03-04-07, 11:31 AM | -Probably was a mad Gnome... If he didn't actually invent them himself:) He was a 16th level arcanist, not to mention a decent fighter as well. Perfectly reasonable for him to have developed several 1st level spells:P -It shall be a four-part trilogy!! And then the movie rights! |
| The_Shaman03-05-07, 12:34 PM | Don't forget the action figures! I'm just wondering... There are spells named after many of the great mages of Faerun, but I don't remember anything dedicated to/made by Ioulaum or Karsus. Are there some spells that carry their name per canon? |

Ioulaum's Longevity and Karsus's Avatar:) Or do you mean 9th level or lower? |
| The_Shaman03-09-07, 07:28 AM | Wait, wasn't Karsus' Avatar the spell he used to ascend? I've missed it... Is it even epic? Thanks for reminding me about I's longevity - it had skipped my mind. But yes, I expected that they made some non-epic spells, too. I mean, Larloch's name is (or was, I don't know if it was updated) on one of the simplest non-cantrip spells in existance. |
| Stigger03-09-07, 04:06 PM | Not epic... 12th level... goes a bit beyond epic really. |
