| Gift_of_Fury11-03-07, 06:10 PM | What would happen if for some reason, all magic in the realms suddenly ceased? Would undead be affected and if so how? Would Beholders be able to use their "levitate" ability?, how would they hunt etc? Would Trolls be able to regenerate? What would the chosen of Mystra do?, would they go into hiding, would they die? Would dragons be able to use their breath weapons?, Would mundane (now all) weapons affect them and other such creatures? Lets assume that for a short time due to ....say cosmic/divine events all magic, both Clerical and wizardly ceased, what would happen to "Civilization" Would countries ruled by the "might of the sword" ie Rasheeman, attack their enemies ie Thay? To take the question to another level, What would happen if the gods were somehow "act of Ao perhaps" prevented from having any contact with their priests, followers etc, lets say that were in effect shut out from the prime material plane "Toril" I am running an adventure where this event is about to take place, in effect the gods loose all contact with the prime plane, all extra planner gates etc cease to function. I really need help with this one guys, hope you can give me some great suggestions and ideas. Thanks all |

No its not a joke, I do not have a copy of GHoTR, as for the FRCG due out next Aug, I am happy to get a copy in 9 months time. As for now I would also like to hear from our fellow forum readers and find out their opinions about what they think would happen in this situation. Anyhow, thanks for your constructive two zhents worth:D |
| Another Gnome11-04-07, 07:08 AM | Would undead be affected and if so how? Undead would lose their spells, spell-like, and supernatural abilities. Ghosts would become stuck on the ethereal plane (where their abilities would work normally), but undead would not puff out of existence. Would Beholders be able to use their "levitate" ability?, how would they hunt etc? Beholder flight is a natural ability (presumably they're lighter than air). Their eye rays would become useless, but they could still hunt by biting their prey. Would Trolls be able to regenerate? Yes. It's a natural (extraordinary) ability. What would the chosen of Mystra do?, would they go into hiding, would they die? Remains to be seen. From a strictly mechanical point of view, they would not suffer any ill effects other than losing magical powers (they would age normally from that point on for example, but there would be no retroactive consequences). Would dragons be able to use their breath weapons?, Would mundane (now all) weapons affect them and other such creatures? Dragons would lose their breath weapons, spells, spell-like abilities, and damage reduction. Lets assume that for a short time due to ....say cosmic/divine events all magic, both Clerical and wizardly ceased, what would happen to "Civilization" Remains to be seen, but only a handful of societies in Faerūn are actually dependent on magic. Would countries ruled by the "might of the sword" ie Rasheeman, attack their enemies ie Thay? Remains to be seen. Thay would likely fall apart through infighting and slave uprisings even without outside enemies, but that's assuming the entire world population would suddenly realize magic is gone everywhere (which is pretty unlikely especially when you wouldn't have magical means to alert people). Realistically, there would be a very long period of waiting and sitting still until news would slowly start to spill in to convince rulers that other nations are just as helpless. |

Would countries ruled by the "might of the sword" ie Rasheeman, attack their enemies ie Thay? This is pretty much what happened during the War of the Spider Queen books. Once slaves started to realize that their masters (i.e. the female clerics) no longer had magical access they rebelled and a few cities were either destroyed or taken over by other groups. I would imagine once the loss of magic was realized by the majority of slaves this same type of situation would occure. But this also depends on the outlook of the slaves. (I.E. if they have lost all hope of being free or not.) Makes me think of the Alvin Maker books by Orson Scott Card. |

I really need help with this one guys, hope you can give me some great suggestions and ideas. Thanks all The "Weave" is actually a Interface for Magic and "circut Breaker" for magic and other effects like Ghost walking,Beholder Eye gazes.Mummy touch, Psionics, and such, and limiting the kind of spells gods can use in the Realms or grant to their followers. My guess is that the only thing that will be effected is native Spellcasters that use the Weave to memorize and cast spells. The "circut breaker" being gone won't effect Beholder gazes,a Ghost ability to walk through walls, or a Dragon's ability to cast magic or a god's ability to grant a spell to a priest as these things happened way before the Weave came into place to govern it to death much like the FCC,FDA,USDA,EPA,etc governs and regulates the heck out of everything and make things more expensive and costly in the U.S.....but I digress Likewise Sorcerers may be able to draw directly from the "Ether" and Plane walking Wizards like Eliminster and Halaster may have long learned how to access magic directly from the "Ether" without the "Crutch" that the Weave is when outside of the Forgotten Realms to which the "Weave" is unique. On the good side Elven High Magic will be availible again. On the bad side the Shades and the gods now have no limits on the Level of spells and powers they can acess and grant. Shadow Magic Users and alternative magic users (Life/Meta Mages,Elementalist,Alienist,Mystics) also would also not be effected by the collapse of the weave though finding a mage that draws power from life itself (preserver/defiler), from the Elemental Plane, from secrets learned from powers from "Beyond", or from within is almost unheard of in Forgotten Realms. But just as Epic Spell Casting came in the light of Mystra restricting Magic, People that loose the abiliy to cast magic without her will find away......I am sure many know that she is only a "middleman" for Magic, not the Source of Magic and Mages learning to tap power directly from the Ether would be just a matter of time (Saving Ao doesn't replace his godling of Magic) |
| Zsych11-11-07, 07:55 PM | The underlying magic of Toril is supposed to be very hard to control with spellfire being an example of what the native magic is likely to be like if tapped directly, so mages may end up not being able to cast even 1st level spells. ... and since divine magic always went through the Weave(unlike psionics and such), I'd say that it is dependent on the Weave's nature, and with only Toril's raw magic around, gods who can't actually use that themselves are going to be in serious trouble, trying to do anything themselves or grant spells to their clerics. *... sees gods not being able to cast even basic healing spells...* :) |
