Herne would appear to be a Brittanic deity of hunters that interloped into the realms many thousands of years ago. He may have come over around the same time as the Celtic deities. Faiths & Avatars mentions that Herne arrived in Faerūn around the same time as Oghma--probably due to an influx of Brittanic immigrants who came through a planar rift or portal.

Malar killed Herne near the begining of the novel Evermeet. The scene takes place before Araushnee's attempted coup against Corellon. Lost Empires of Faerūn dates this to approximately -30,000 DR. So Herne has been dead for over 31,000 years.

Since that time, Malar has taken Herne's name as an alias. Faiths & Avatars says that Herne was venerated by orcs of the High Forest.

Herne has also appeared in various editions of Deites and Demigods/Legends and Lore under the Celtic mythos (though historically, he appears to be more Roman IIRC). I believe the Master of the Hunt even got a conversion at the Creature Catalogue website.

In addition, in 2Es Savage Frontier and/or The North supplements there is some discussion about the orcs that worship Herne growing antlers.

I imagine that Rip must be as good at golf as he is with the lore. For he is obviously very deft and savvy at the links. ;)
