How long till Shar sticks it to me? [Archive] - Wizards Community

So, I'm playing a wizard in Cormyr: Tearing of the Weave, and have taken Shadow Weave Magic, aiming to become a Shadow Adept. My question is, seeing as I'm working almost directly against Shar via her clerics, how long will it take before she ganks my Shadow Weave usage?

Will she gank it at all?

Nice to know, cause I really like the Shadow Weave, but I may need to ask the DM if I can retcon myself if I won't have the usage of my magic in the latter half of the adventure.

From MY point of view, from what I know: She won't.

From what I know she haven't cut off anyone from the Shadow Weave, doesn't matter if they don't worship her. She want them to but if they don't she still gains a spellcaster away for the Weave.

She might try to lure you tho, try to bring you to her side through any method, suggestions, lies and false promises. She can try that herself by visions or even 'personally' using an aspect if you are a talented mage, or she can through her church and many agents, so I think that your character, if your DM share MY point of view, will just encounter some difficulties along the way.

She won't. She'll just send someone to kill you if you cause enough problems. However, more likely she'll look for ways to corrupt and use you to her advantage. I think its great because your using the Shadow Weave in this type of adventure opens up some interesting plot and story development for your character. Stick with it and let the chips fall where they may.

if she does I think you can still draw you magic from the weave like a regular mage. the shadow weave magic feat does not say you can no longer draw magic from the weave. Or does it?

maybe she use you. If you become really sucessful, you will spread shadow weave use, thus helping her.

Being ganked by Shar isn't your problem.

Your problem is if some Selunite feminazis or rabid followers of Mystra detect where your magic is coming from.
At the least expect surveillance from your local Harper agents...

Eh, Selunites or Mystrans are no more dangerous than any other zealots. If they attack you, they die. Simple as that.

Until you kill enough of them, of course, to warrant the attention of one of the 900 Chosen Mystra has at her disposal; at which point you are screwed. He will just teleport in, hurl eighty fireballs and fart a rainbow within the first three seconds before going back to his normal business.

What does he do for his "normal business" you ask? Oh, he runs some tavern in Waterdeep. :P

The moment you take the Shadow Weave feat you are barred from Mystra's Weave. It's a one-way ticket.

Unless you use a wish or a miracle spell then you can go back to using the weave.

Yes, that will work wonders. :D

PC: "Hey Shar, I was just thinking, maybe you could grant me this wish to go back to Weave?"

Shar: (doing her nails) "Oh, really?"

PC: "Well... uh... yeah. I was kinda, you know, getting tired of this shadow stuff... and stuff."

Shar: "Sorry honey, my contract won't allow me to hook you up with her network. Go ask Mystra instead."

PC: "Uh... there's just this... little problem with doing that..."

Shar: "Indeed?"

PC: "What with being cut off of the Weave and all..."

Shar: "Yep, life's a *****. And so am I."

Hmm... don't recall a feat being granted or ungranted by use of Miracle or Wish.

Going mostly by the novels... I think your basic nature and way of thinking are changed in learning to access the Shadow-weave.

Undoing that probably wouldn't be easy, and a Shadow Adept trying to research it will quickly find himself dead.
... could ask a Weave user to research it(and risk Shar's wrath)

This a special case, there are cannon facts that make the return to Mystra's Weave an epic adventure at least, the Shadow Weave has a 99% chance of being a one way ticket.

Hmm, how does your character even know that shar is behind it? She is tied as the 3rd most powerful god/dess, and her portfolio is shadows and secrets. I dont think your character would even have the slightest clue that shar holds you now.

Most likely its like venom, from Spider-man..slowly turning you to evil. And it would be so slight that your character might not even notice the changes. Such as using a fireball when one is'nt needed to take down a foe of cormyr and in the process taking out innocent life that "you just didnt know about". Stuff like that.

Just play dumb and if your DM is gonna wank you..your best bet is to talk to him/her about it. If that dont work just either try to rememedy the problem somehow or would sound like a good time to just make up a new character.

Why would Shar be upset with you for blundering into one of her secrets? She's more likely to be mad at the folk who let one of her secrets be revealed. In fact, since you have "turned against her", she may consider you a wonderful spy to infiltrate the church of Mystra.

Being Jewish I know exactly what a Nazi is thank you very much.
My comment was very tongue in cheek as the Realms seems overrun with female dominated organizations, priesthoods and prestige classes.

None taken, as I work in a corporate environment similar to yours.
People look at you weird when you bring up Rush's obvious hypocrisies. Now why would a neocon who supports the "war" on drugs and "traditional" family values need multiple prescriptions for oxycontin from several doctors and be in possession of a bottle of Viagra written "for a friend". Remember he's not married so does this mean that he engages in fornication outside of marriage? How does this sit with his "born again" audience I wonder?
(I think I'm going to have to sit as I may be getting the vapors...)

Oh and by the way...ARE there any prestige classes or priesthoods limited to males in the same manner?

I would love to see a male only PRC that does not involve removing your man-parts. I mean, why can't there be sexism in D&D? Racism runs rampant. It seems every evil race, and a few "good" ones looks down on all other races. Sun elves, I'm talking to you on this one!

Hey, speaking of eunuchs, do Jordaini Viziers have to be male? I think they were also discouraged from entering certain relationships once they graduated.

Edit: OP, she can shut you down whenever she feels like you're more trouble than opportunity. Just because she doesn't make a habit of canceling the magic of ambitious and skillful magi - it's bad publicity if you survive and spread the word, just in case - doesn't mean you can rely on your time stop in that climactic showdown with her high priestess, who is planning to satisfy her medical curiosity with a tied-down chosen of Selune and a scalpel.

Shar might sometimes act in a manner similar to a 16-year-old with emotional problem, but she is more experienced, cunning, skillful or, for the lack of a better word, wise than most things in the Realms could even imagine possible. A greater deity older (iirc) than Abeir-Toril itself can definitely plan ahead and act subtly, when She so wishes.

Well, she is supposedly older acording to the creation stories of the Priest.....though Ao showing up and saying He is the creator of the gods but not the Realms didn't seem to raise an Eyebrow of the fanatical worshipers that belive the creationd stories they were spoonfed by their religions? (e.g. Selune and Shar fighting and creating the other gods in the fall out when this weird guy in a funky robe said "he" made the gods that govern the realm and cast them down to mortality or grant Cyric and Midnight godhood on a whim)

And yeah, all that power with very few people able to thwart you from getting your way is why a lot of the godlings are arrogant and act like 2 year olds most of the time and 16 year olds the rest of the time.

Hmmmm, as for the main question. No. Shar has no reason to "cut your PC off"

It should be noted that the Shadow Weave is hard on the mind and without the "Grace of Shar" to protect you from the mind numbing and warping qualities you risk going insane at higher levels if not turning into the "Shadow King" (if one doesn't already exist) as the Shadow showly warps you mentally and physically (don't think it's commonly known that Bard "Shadow Magic" is Bards stumbling on Shar's method of Magic)

AO created Selune and Shar. There war created the other Gods. AO still created all the other Gods by creating the Gods that created the other Gods. Its cause and effect.

Prove it. Admittedly as it is a magical attunement, it should probably require magic to undo but I haven't actually seen anyone really try to sever their connection to Shar's Weave and reclaim acces to the normal. As far as I know, there is nothing definitive written one way or another and the matter is completely dependent on the DM. Am I missing something?
Alediran

05-24-07, 12:55 AM
I know of only one stance, and it took Mystra herself to remake the connection for Halaster in Elminster in Hell. Not even Halaster could do that and he is very powerfull for a semi-mortal.

Last time I saw Mystra meddling directly in his affairs, there were two distinctive qualifying factors.

1) Shar had personnally been meddling in his affairs which would of course potentially complicate things.

2) I can't prove this so take it or leave but I doubt Halaster went out of his way to ask for outside help. In this instance, I could see a priest and a miracle being more effective than Halaster if I doubled his caster level and gave him epic spells.
PharaunMizzrym

05-24-07, 01:26 AM
If one were to cast a wish or miracle (in the case of a miracle to Shar or other evil deity; for wish being cast by a shadow weave user) to force another magic user to shift from the weave to the shadow weave, could it work? If so, would the opposite work? P.S. If so Chosen of Mystra be scared, be very scared.
MaskedOne

05-24-07, 01:58 AM
It is possible within certain limitations to force a shift to the Shadow Weave. Only time I've seen it done involved an artifact though that the character had to touch or access the power within.

As for the Chosen being scared, depends on how you use them. I tend to think anyone carrying a fragment of Mystra's divine power should be treated as having Weave Focus (think that's the name) effectively barring them from the Shadow Weave permanently but that's a house rule.
PharaunMizzrym

05-24-07, 02:16 AM
Having Mystras's essence would probably block the shift, and even if it didnt she would probably directly intervene. Shar would still have quasi deity babies with you for coming up with the idea.
GothWulf

05-25-07, 10:27 AM
I would say a wish, no..however a miracle cast by a priest of Mystra <or Selune>...along with an atonement and quest at the same time...<though Selune wouldnt require that...She would be moe then happy to put one over on Her sister> THAT would do it....and also put you right at the top of Shar's hit list.

Moving past the novels in to WotC cannon. In Magic of Faerun pg. 11 it says "once a creature has chosen the Shadow Weave, no known way exists for it to draw upon the true weave in the former manner, although a wish, miracle, or similar magic might work." That is the closest cannon comes to discussing it and as a GM I tend to bow to cannon so I would have to be inclined to allow it, unless I had specific plot points built around that PCs connection to the Shadow Weave. As for using these same spells to receive/force feed the weave I don't see anywhere in the description of the spell that would let you do that.
