Hey FR Lovers!

I'm going to be running Anauroch the Empire of Shade. The question has come up, Is Incarnum effected by dead magic zones? Does it draw on the weave for it's effects? I don't know. I've thought up valid rationalizations going both ways.

What do you folks think? Why?

Thanks!!!!

On pg. 4 of Magic of Incarnum it says that "like the Expanded Psionics Handbook, this book presents a new system that is similar to magic but different, a novel way of looking at characters who who deal with the supernatural"

So i'd guess that if psionics are affected by DM zones and draw from the Weave, then so should Incarnum, too

But i think i remember something along the lines of all manifestations of supernatural powers draw from the Weave, but i'm not sure about this... if that's indeed right, i needn't even have to draw the analogy to psionics ;)

Sorry for the chaotic thoughts, i read a lot, but keep mixing it up and forgetting parts of it :D

There's also this article.

Actually, psionics don't use any weave and they work fine in a DMZ, which is just a hole in one of the weaves.

what about psionics-magic transparency?

perhaps i was wrong in that they use the weave, which they clearly don't.
but, in core d&d (greyhawk) all manifestation seem to follow the same rules (magic, psionics, incarnum). isn't it like that in the realms, too.

i am confused, enlighten me please :D

In the Realms, dead magic zones aren't areas that lack magic, they are areas that lack the Weave (or Shadow Weave), and only the magic dependent upon the particular weave in which the DMZ exists is affected. A DMZ in the Weave affects only Weave-based magic (the standard default magic of FR. Unless specifically stated, assume any magic, supernatural ability, spell-like ability draws upon the Weave). However, Shadow-Weave based magic works fine in a Weave Dead Magic Zone, as does psionics (since they don't draw upon any weave), pluma magic, and table magic, as well as any weaveless form of magic currently unknown to us. Incarnum is Weave-based, as per that article I linked to.
I'm not sure if I'm doing a good job at explaining it:embarrass

you're doing perfectly fine, thank you!

i wasn't aware of that article before and my access to the source books is not unlimited.
i was a player for several years but only recently started DMing games myself and tried to absorb as many things as possible. the sheer mass of information is still slightly confusing ;)

Cool that link was just what I needed. I don't suppose you know of a link that applies to Warlocks and the weave? I've looked and I cannot find one. Right now I'm assuming that they draw on the weave like any other creature with spell like abilities, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Thanks for your help and you explain just fine!
