Kereska [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-10-07, 02:11 AM So, according to the tiny tid-bits I've been finding lately, Kereska is the Dragon goddess of magic.

But, I can't seem to figure out where she's actually been, you know, documented, or really refered to in something longer than a single sentance. Is there any information about her out there, and if so, where?

10-10-07, 12:42 PM Where did you find these "tid-bits"? I looked through the monster deity list in Faiths and Pantheons, Dragons of Faerun, and all of the 2e stuff, but found no reference to Kereska.

According to the Draconimicon, Io is the Dragon God of Magic.

Why are they still creating new gods, when they've already decided to down-size the Pantheons?

I swear, I just can't figure out where those WotC guys are coming from half the time... :rolleyes:

Huh. I guess there's no official data on her, other than she's some sort of Magic and Chaos dragon goddess.

Edit: Maybe she's the new mystra.

10-10-07, 06:29 PM Kereska is mentioned in the 2nd Edition sourcebook "Cult of the Dragon". "Cult of the Dragon" lists the sources of the dragon deities listed in it as the 2nd Edition "Draconomicon" and "Monster Mythology". I dont have either of those, so I couldn't tell you which of them she's from.

And no, she isn't new. She's an oldie that got cut out and is now apparently back in.

Kereska is listed as CN with a portfolio specifically devoted to dragon magic and magical creativity.

I don't have those other two books either, pity.

If so, then the dragon deities of magic must be in some way subservient to Mystra, and if she goes, then they'll be affected as well. Unless their deities can shield them somehow.

Not only is she mentioned in the Cult of the Dragon sourcebook, she goes back even further, appearing originally in the 2e Draconomicon. My personal take on Kereska is that she may very well be an aspect or fragment of Mystra or even Mystryl.

If it were actually Mystryl, then it might explain why her faith had been dwindling since the fall of Netheril. If it were Mystra I, it might explain why not much had been heard from her since the Time of Troubles.

Kereska works very well as simply the draconic face/alias of the god of magic. Remember, Mystryl/Mystra wasn't just the human god of magic. She was the original deity of magic for all the Realms.

There is every reason to think that Mystryl was worshiped by many races, but not necessarily by that name or face. Most races would interpret her in a guise that reflected the worshiper. For instance, I like to think that Lurue was the fey aspect of Mystryl.

And don't forget that the dragons ruled Faerūn for 6,000 years. No reason they would not have given Mystryl a draconic name and visage.

In adapting the name of Mystra into draconic, some simple phonetic changes could see the "M" and the "T" become "K", and Kereska could easily be the result of adapting the name to something that is more easy to pronounce for the draconic vocal apparatus.
