Hi!

I just read through Khelben's stats in the FRCS and there's a short descrition of some spells I wasn't able to find in my books:
Alustriel's fang, brain spider, gauntlet, minor spell turning, Muirara's map, sphere of wonder and wraithform

Does anybody have a little bit more information on these spells?

They're all old 2e spells as far as I'm aware, that've mostly never made it into 3.x, though I'm pretty sure wraithform is now Ghostform. Not sure of their details offhand though, I'd have to look it up, and my fatigue level isn't gonna let me do that at the moment... I'll look them up tomorrow if someone doesn't post them before then. :)

-That's kinda strange. Most 2e spells that haven't been "translated" into 3e don't show up in recent material.

There were numerous "2E-and-not-yet-converted" spells listed in stat blocks in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, primarily in stat blocks where actual spell selections needed to be listed (sorcerer spells, selected spell-like abilities, etc) as opposed to being more open ended (wizard spells prepared, ambiguous spellbook entries, etc). It would generally be rather silly for Khelben's bonus spells to be altered just because a handful of those spells have not been converted yet, so obviously they opted to err on the side on continuity and present them in shorthand summary.

The parenthetical descriptions give more than enough information to adjudicate their effects, at least in the context of the (rare) scenarios where those NPCs will cast them in the presence of a PC, so in most cases a full description of the spell is not needed.

Lets see... (note that I've done a quick updating to 3e terms from their older forms)

Alustriel's Fang, level 2 transmutation, 60' range, VSM, standard casting time, 2 round duration, AoE is 1 weapon, no save... basically let you use a piercing weapon against a foe up to 60 feet away, with I'd guess a +1 to attack and damage. It attacks twice, is treated as +1 weapon for what it can hit, once each round using the casters attack bonus, then returns to the caster. Seems that the weapon can be seized by someone and held. Material component is a pinch of iron filings and the weapon to be used.

Brain Spider, level 8 divination, close range, VSM, full round casting time, 1 round/level duration, will negates... Lets the caster listen in on the thoughts of up to 8 other beings... surface thoughts and images, or individual trains of thought in the order the caster desires, or information from all minds about one particular topic, thing, or being - 1 bit of information per caster level. You could make a study of the thoughts and memories of one creature of the group in detail. Once per round when not using 'detailed' study, you can implant 1 sugggestion in one of the 8's minds. There's more about psionics and those under the effects of an enchantment/charm spell being semi-immune... not sure how that would get translated though, so I'd just ignore it going along with the psionic transparancy stuff... and it apparently doesn't work on the insane or someone who has been feebleminded. Material component is a spider of any size, living or dead.

Gauntlet, level 1 evocation [force], personal range, VSM, standard casting time, 9 round duration, one of casters hand as AoE, no save... basically a sheathe of force over one of the casters hands, can be used to wedge things without harming the casters hand, and the caster can remove his hand from it while wedged and leave it there. The glove basically protects the casters hand from most harmful things and lets them handle lots of dangerous stuff without harm. Some stuff about combat with it, its treated as a +4 weapon for what it can hit, and +2d4 damage bonus to unarmed strikes that seems a bit excessive for a 1st level spell. Material component is a lump of clear glass or rock crystal large enough to fill the casters palm.

Minor Spell Turning, level 4 abjuration, personal range, VSM, standard casting time, 3 rounds/level, caster AoE, no save... basically functions like spell turning but only working on 1d4 levels of spells, and it does not partially turn a spell, being negated instead. Material component is a plished silver coin.

Muirara's Map, level 5 divination, personal range, VS, 2 round casting time, special AoE, 1 round duration, no save... gives a mental image to the caster of four points of light, 1 being the caster, 2 being known locations, and the last being the being sought after, who's specified during the casting. Basically imparts a rough idea of the targets location, including direction and distance from the caster. It also indicates whether the target is indoors or outdoors, above or below ground, moving or stationary via a hazy mental image. Magical protection from divination seems to foil the spell. Was developed by one of Sylune's favorite apprentices, a long dead half-elf sorceress for which the spell is named.

Sphere of Wonder, level 9 transmutation/evocation, close range, VS, standard casting time, 1 round/level duration, 90' diameter sphere area, no save... calls into being a statonary sphere of magical radiance equal to a light spell, in which no spells or magical items discharges can take effect or persist unless it is of a type silently chosen by the caster. Seems to essentially be arointing everything but spells of a specific type or descriptor, and there's no way to tell what the effect is unless you're the caster... affected spells cast from within or into the sphere are negated, the suppression effect ceases when the sphere is exited, and a rod of cancellation ends the spell immediately.

Wraithform, level 3 transmutation/illusion (shadow), personal range, SM, standard casting time, 2 rounds/ level duration, caster only, no save... essentially works identically to Ghostform from the look of it, most undead ignore the caster thinking him a wraith or spectre, +1 or better weapon to hit the caster, can pass through small holes or narrow openings, even mere cracks as long as the spell persists. It doesn't confer the ability to fly, and is dismissable. Material component is a bit of gauze and a wisp of smoke.

Hope that helps some, good luck. :)

Wow, thank you. That's exactly what I was looking for.
I think I will try to convert them to D&D 3.5 for my campaign.
WotC should at least have given the spell levels in the FRCS. ;)

No problem... though that is mostly updated to 3.5e, dual school spells from PHB II and all... not sure why I said 3e actually.
