Stigger 11-02-07, 09:30 AM	Conceivably, I suppose one could do so... though I'd wonder how likely it would be that the soul had already been claimed by some fiend or other, and the probability that doing so would really, really upset the fiend whose prize just got snatched away.

One entry in wish says: Revive the dead. A wish can bring a dead creature back to life by duplicating a resurrection spell. A wish can revive a dead creature whose body has been destroyed, but the task takes two wishes, one to recreate the body and another to infuse the body with life again. The last sentence could not serve for this purpose?
MarkusTay63 11-02-07, 12:01 PM	In the case of a Lich, the phylactory itself restores the body, so a second wish would be unneccesary. However, can wishes be used to restore magical devices (I don't have my books handy)? I would definately count a Lich's phylactory as a magical device.

Purple Dragon Knight 11-03-07, 11:13 AM	Yes. The description of the wish spell states that you can create magical items with it. However, you must pay BOTH the 5000 XP cost of the spell AND twice the XP cost for creating a philactery in the first place! 4800XP is normally required to create a philactery, which means that casting wish to create it would cost you 9600XP instead, as per the wish rules, plus the standard 5000XP wish cost (total: 14,600XP) Ouch! :D Edit: unless the wish is worded insanely carefully, with the dead lich's TRUE childhood name, as given by his mother of old, and enumerating all the achievements/deeds done by the mage/cleric, then mentioning the exact date of his/her transformation to lichdom, and the main reasons behind it, I would NOT allow this wish to work, and would turn it on the PC instead, making him/her an evil lich INSTANTLY. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but the description of the wish spell and its section on magical items pertains to creating an "average magical item" of its kind, if you will. Nowhere does it states that you can replicate existing or past items attuned to casters, etc. So if you cast wish to create a staff of fire, you get an new staff of fire, one that has not existed before. Similarly, wishing for a philactery would give you a NEW philactery, attuned to YOURSELF, unless you word the wish spell super carefully, as mentioned above... even then, this might be stretching the power of the wish spell a little... 3.5 wish rules are more restrictive than their 2nd edition version...
