Ok, so I'm completly boggled by her silence. Was there much of a purpose, besides changing her form, and making the DWP(Demonweb pits) it's own plane? Because she probably could have seen that this would destroy Maemidra, and Ched Nasad, and nearly decimated Menzoberranzan? Not to mention that Vhaeraun nearly killed her, and that Halisstra was and would have killed her if Danifae wasn't little miss backstabber. While i agree that change is good, a little bit too much can be bad. Can you imagine no Lolthites in the world? No females to degrade and kill the insolent males? The only thing left would be the Night Masks, Eilistrae, Kiarlansee, and Ghaundaur.
While i like and worship Eilistrae and Kiarlansee, my 1st and foremost deity has and always will be Lolth.

Did Lloth forsee the destruction of these cities? Probably not. But did she forsee some disaster coming, most likely. Remeber, she's a goddess of Chaos. She delights in watching her followers backstab and manipulate eachother. She even encourages it in them.

I personally feel she was getting a little bored with the status quo and wanted a major shake up. something that would change the rules in every city.

OK ok dont worry QC is here. Lolth though she is my Matron Deity doesn't care much about her worshippers. Driders are a perfect example of this. Lolth saw what would happen to her worshippers once she fell silent. And she went silent to become a greater goddess and take her plane out of the Abyss. Though with the release of the Lady Penitent series it might be for another reason unknown to us. She thought this a good time to weed out the weak and she did. Menzoberranzan is the jewel of the Queen of Chaos. That is why it stayed under her rule. Maerimydra was ruled by House Chumavh and the city fell from greatness many years ago and only had traffic because of the grand temple it had in the city. Ched Nasad was a powerful city of the Spider Queen but it was ruled by some unworthy drow most notably Halisstras mother. She was weak and she should have killed her daughter when she knew that a battle captive though of great beauty could control her daughter with words.

But wasn't it in the Time of Troubles decided that a god's power decided on by their worshippers? So if she didn't care about them, then, her power would diminish due to the fact that so many followers are dying or converting. Im sure Maemidra, and Ched Nasad severly weakened her, along with Szith Morcane, while Eilistrae, Vhaeraun, and Kiarlansee gained major footholds of power. That's my 2 cents on the matter.

Well, personally, I don't think Lolth needs a reason to be silent. As a previous poster said, she delights in chaos. Honestly, they don't need adventurers to ruin their plans, if left alone they'll ruin them all on their own. Of course that's why I also think that dark elves should not exist in the present day realms. Realistically, their rampant sororicide would have mudered them all into extinction millenia ago. That's not even taking into account the threats from mind flayers, derro, aboleth, and whatever other horrors exist in the underdark.

Lolth is very "survival of the fittest" in the realms. I'm guessing that going into her chrysalis, she knew that anyone still around after she emerged would probably be more worthy of worshiping her. While she has fewer overall worshippers, the ones she does have tend to be more powerful (there is some debate about how this affects deities since ToT). The silence itself, aside from needing all that power channeled inward rather than granted to her clerics, was almost more of a test than anything else, both for her and for them.

First, isn't allow novel discussion so a spoiler warning would be good next time, doesn't matter that almost everyone knows the events and ending of the WotSQ. Just a good intended advice.

So that left aside. Yes it was by AO, but since current events, people are starting to think that deities gain divine power by other means also, like for example, how much influence or activity have a portfolio in the Realms, also, not just the number of worshipers but the power of them (level/HD) as well.

All the turmoil and every event that happened by Lolth' Silence, or her greatest test as few call it, might grant her so divine power if we use the theories above, even besides the large number of dead drow in the process but not all of them were her worshipers, so Lolth's portfolios are Assassins, Chaos, Darkness, Drow, Evil, Spiders. Now everyone could apply the above theories and see the match portfolios with the whole WotSQ events.

Well it has been said that for every surface elf moon or sun their is one dark elf. And if all of them can worship Corellon and he still be a greater diety after Myth Drannor and the retreat then Lolth can take the destruction of 2 cities. Lolth had been a lot worse to her worshippers. She has sent avatars and creature to destroy noble houses she thought were weak. Plus with the survival of the fittest thing she has AO cant really do much. She doesn't care if the other dieties in the Anti-Selderine got power.**spoiler**If you are reading the Lady Penitent series Selvetarm is dead and Vhaerun is absorbed by Elis. and in the next book it hinted that Kir and Ghaun are next. So she is getting all those worshippers back she will have no problems.**

I'm not so sure about all of that. If you read the back of SoTW, it implies that Lolth is doing all this on purpose. She doesnt want to share her domain.

As for Vhaerun... Well, I'm rereading WoTSQ. I'm not so sure he's dead either after a few bits in Condemnation.

Much has been said on the matter hereabouts (this board) already. Just let me point out that Lolth is the patron of the dark elves / drow and was previously the "Weaver of Destiny" of all elves on Faerūn. In that respect, I would assume that she did not go into hibernations (etc.) without being sure that it works out favourably in the end. Of course, the Silence was the ultimate test for all her worshippers' loyalty too. Those who stayed with her will probably receive certain "compensation" for the experiences during the Silence.

Where can we apply for this compensation? Do we have to fill out a form? Will it be mailed to us? I mean, sheesh, I stayed Loyal to her through out the whole silence and all I got for it was having my home burned down by a bunch mean little duergar runts. Hmmph.

;)

Hi Zan, how are you?

As for the "purpose" of the silence....

1) Weed out the strong/cunning followers from the weak/stupid.

2) Identify those lacking in loyalty.

3) Provide background and "color" for the big changes (i.e. the "ripping" of the Demonweb from the abyss in the FR cosmology and the promotion of Lolth to greater goddess status).

And finally, the Valsharess of all reasons....

4) To sell books.
