Ok, My group has been playing since 2nd Edition and we want to say there was a rule or clause that Mystra lifted the restraints on magic, thus having no spell caps for spells (example 10d6 for fireball) is this still true, or not, or was it just a novel misconception.

'Mystra's ban' has not been lifted. Perhaps you are confusing it with something else.

The limits where still there in second edition and still exist in this one. Are you referring to 'epic magic'? Those are the only rules that allow you to cast spells above level nine.

I think two things are being discussed here. The OP is referring to caster level caps for spells (i.e. the most d6 damage a fireball spell can do) whereas the first reply has to do with Mystra's Ban of spells beyond 9th level.

There may have been something else in 2E that explained away the caster level dependent caps on a spell's damage or effects as being a byproduct of Mystra's ban. In any event, having spell damage caps is important to the core of the games rules to maintain spell level balance.
