I'm reading the Return of the Archwizards trilogy, and in the first book he use a spell I've not heard of before: He cuts the shadow from two of the main characters with a sword, so that they (only the shadows) can move freely around the cavern they are in (fighting Phaerimm).

I wonder what kind of spell this is. What is the spells name? And where can I read more about it? (I want to use a similar effect in my campaign)

Thanks...

You could emulate it with a Summon Monster spell and use the Shadow Elementals from the Tome of Magic.

Suppose I could, but I hope there is a known spell to do the thing Melegaunt did.

Anyone else?

I found some that are close.... you could just be a bit liberal with them like the writer was with his story.

Shadow Form (5th lvl) - Spell Compendium pg 183
Shadow Phase (3rd lvl) - Spell Compendium pg 185

Neither explains the existance of their shadow self needing to be wrestled.
