The Order of Long Death reveres death as an abstraction, above the gods in general and in particular above the god of the dead. Should one say that this organisation is secular in nature? There seems to be some religious aspect to the reverence of death, though not in an obvious way. Or are they nihilistic in nature? Does anyone have any ideas or information on them?

3e's Lords of Darkness is pretty much it for lore on the Monks of the Long Death.

Basic rule on monkish mindsets.

Concepts are important.. gods just know the concept more than mortals do;)

Speculation;

they came from 1ed, and worshiped "dead" Myrkul.

I think a fair bit of them are Jergalites... but yes, I'd say for them the concept of death is more important than the deity who embodies it.

I would like to mention that in the Haunted Lands trilogy, there is a monk who is estranged from the Order of Long Death, but still follows their teachings (therefore, he pretty much is a Monk of the Long Death, just no longer in name).

While their path to monkhood os one fraught with nasty, they are not nihilists per se. Tho evil by definition ( any club that requires infanticide for admission is most def on Santa's 'naughty' list) I have never seen them as bug nuts, if for no other reason than the fact that they are monks. They worship death and suffering, relishing it even, like a kid poking a dead animal with a stick.
