| TheFallenOne05-22-07, 02:31 PM | If a cleric worships a dead god such as Mykrul do they get any spells or anything? |
| Burningspear05-22-07, 02:55 PM | Yes, they do, but they do need a feat: Servant of the Fallen to be able to do so... :smirk: |
| TheFallenOne05-22-07, 03:23 PM | in what book is that found? |
| Burningspear05-22-07, 03:25 PM | A book i dont own, but its in i think a book that has to do with historical facts of netheril and faeruhn, 3.5. edit: lost empires of faeruhn |
| Zanan05-23-07, 09:00 AM | It is indeed Lost Empires of Faerūn. If you want to get some more detailed information about Myrkul, get your hands on a copy (most likely PDF these days -> Paizo.com) of Faiths & Avatars. It is still AD&D, but you do not need the rules bit for using him anyways. |
| DoveArrow05-23-07, 01:22 PM | Another cool thing about Lost Empires of Faerun is that it has Myrkul's Domains and Portfolio listed. If you're interested in Myrkul, you should also check out Faiths and Pantheons, or Magic of Faerun (I forget which) because one of them talks about a magic item called the crown of horns, which holds a portion of Myrkul's essence. There's also a prestige class that you can give one of your villains who has worn the crown of horns that's pretty cool. Again, it's in one of those two books. |
| Adimarchus05-23-07, 03:00 PM | It's Magic of Faerun that has the Crown of Horns and Faiths and Pantheons that has the prestige class (Horned Harbinger), it is pretty cool. IIRC there is a yuan-ti NPC with that PrC in Serpent Kingdoms. One thing about Lost Empires and Myrkul is that it gives him Bhaal's domain of Death in addition to his others; to save confusion I guess (I think it also leaves out Myrkuls portfolios of Autumn and Dusk as well). Poor Bhaal, he never gets a break :weep: . |

Poor Bhaal, he never gets a break :weep: . Unless I am mistaken, Myrkul, as the Lord of the Dead, always had Death as (one of) his portfolio(s). It's more like Bhaal really had just one portfolio, i.e. murder, and the rest were add-ons. |
| Myrkul Lives Again05-23-07, 08:31 PM | Unless I am mistaken, Myrkul, as the Lord of the Dead, always had Death as (one of) his portfolio(s). It's more like Bhaal really had just one portfolio, i.e. murder, and the rest were add-ons. According to Faiths and Avatars (AD&D), Myrkul held "The dead, wasting, decay, corruption, parasites, old age, exhaustion, dusk, autumn" and was a NE Greater Power. While Bhaal held "Death, especially violent or ritual death" as a LE Intermediate power. The old legend was that Bane declared himself the Tyrant of the living, Myrkul the overlord of the Dead, and Bhaal chose to decide who goes where. So then, Bhaal was never the "Lord of Murder" but instead was "Death" while Myrkul was "Lord Dead." Think of Anubis and Osiris from the Egyptian pantheon or the Ferryman and Hades. |
| Lady_Mhaor05-26-07, 12:29 PM | Dead Three and knucklebones? |
| XHereticX05-27-07, 02:06 PM | Damn it, I so want Myrkul back as a deity. With Myrkul and Bhaal gone, Orcus incacipated, and Moander still rotting in some tomb there seem to be no good deities of death/decay left. |
| GothicDan05-27-07, 02:07 PM | Velsharoon is the only one left, and to me, he's just not nearly as cool as Szass Tam. |
| XHereticX05-27-07, 02:07 PM | Velsharoon is the only one left, and to me, he's just not nearly as cool as Szass Tam. Tam is teh awesomeness, especially with his latest move in Unclean. |
| GothicDan05-27-07, 02:08 PM | I don't know what's going on in the novel. I just know if Szass dies or something, I'll totally flip a table. I'm tired of the newest storylines killing off plots and characters. |

| GothicDan05-27-07, 02:11 PM | I think so, too. It's good to hear that from the mouths of babes. ;) |
| XHereticX05-27-07, 02:13 PM | I think so, too. It's good to hear that from the mouths of babes. ;) wtf...did you call me a girl? |
| GothicDan05-27-07, 02:14 PM | No! It's a saying about hearing things from young people that are largely unbiased in their judgments. |
| XHereticX05-27-07, 02:16 PM | No! It's a saying about hearing things from young people that are largely unbiased in their judgments. Ok, yeah I am young. And I probably know more about old school D&D than any other person of my generation in the surrounding area. And as much as some old timers as well. I seriously need to make my friends start exploring beyond core. |
| GothicDan05-27-07, 02:21 PM | Ok, yeah I am young. And I probably know more about old school D&D than any other person of my generation in the surrounding area. And as much as some old timers as well. That's the way I was, too, and I'm 22. I gamed at the table with 25-30 year olds when I was 13-14. Heh. I seriously need to make my friends start exploring beyond core. You do. |
| MarkusTay6305-27-07, 02:24 PM | Actually, Dan would only refer to you as a "Babe" if you weren't a girl. ;) Damn it, I so want Myrkul back as a deity. With Myrkul and Bhaal gone, Orcus incacipated, and Moander still rotting in some tomb there seem to be no good deities of death/decay left.Myrkul rocks, Kelemvor is dull as dirt. Thats why I 86'ed him my game, and brought back the old gaurd. We might have to add Vaehruan to that list of cool evil gods that are now MIA. :( |
| GothicDan05-27-07, 02:25 PM | I was always sort of neutral on Vhaeraun. If he was a god of male Drow spellcasters/wizards... Woah. <3 <3 Why isn't there one of those? I could totally see a spot open in the pantheon. |
| MarkusTay6305-27-07, 02:27 PM | Maybe if Gromph dies, he could ascend. (Not that I want that) Their was that uber-powerful Drowlich that fought Gromph, but having another Lich in the anti-seldarine would be kind of redundant. |
| GothicDan05-27-07, 02:30 PM | Agreed. I was thinking actually of a more LN or TN type deity to help balance out the pantheon a little, too. Maybe more of a level-headed type god, who also espoused true Drow unity, as well. "Through magic we may find unity and rise to our rightful positions." |
| The Ubbergeek05-27-07, 02:47 PM | I don't know what's going on in the novel. I just know if Szass dies or something, I'll totally flip a table. I'm tired of the newest storylines killing off plots and characters. Not to insult or contradict you in a mean way/just to contradict, but as a reversal point - is not eternaly living characters a bit tiring? (As in, who survives all) A good death can enrich a character, have it lives miraculously through deus ex machina can be cheap too. Just a point. Kelemvor is not that bad, he just is the classical, stern and calm officier of the death ministry, so to speak. Now, personaly, I am more wanting a revival of the Chthuluesque Moander... That guy was incomprehensible, horrifying and fugly. Cosmic-grade wrongness. |

(As in, who survives all) A good death can enrich a character, have it lives miraculously through deus ex machina can be cheap too. Just a point. That's not actually a point. That's an opinion. And I think that good character deaths CAN be good. You're right. I just don't know of any that have been very satisfying lately, and it certainly wouldn't be the case if Szass Tam was killed in such a way. Kelemvor is not that bad, he just is the classical, stern and calm officier of the death ministry, so to speak. No, some of us really don't like him. Don't try to 'correct' us on whether or not he's bad. You can say you don't THINK he's bad, but don't infer it as if it's fact. |
| MarkusTay6305-27-07, 03:06 PM | He was EXTREMLY boring as a human, and even moreso as a God. And that, of course, is MY opinion. :P |

That guy was incomprehensible, horrifying and fugly. Cosmic-grade wrongness. Kelemvor is a stuid, immature version of Hades who didn't deserve to become a god in the first place. I don't have much love for vhaeraun either, he always seemed like a Mask-wannabe to me. |
| Lady_Mhaor05-27-07, 04:04 PM | Everybody except the Lord Tyrant himself is a wannabe Mask |
| The Ubbergeek05-27-07, 09:40 PM | At least, Kelemvor have the dispasionate, drab pro feeling. In a way, that's ressuring - a god who is level-headed, passionless and all; like a mortal doctorate. Should be more of him, perhaps. 'Twould make the world run fluidly (if without the showoff and all). All in all, all my posts are my opinions unless I present a known fact I remarke dor sich, yadda yadda... |
| GothicDan05-27-07, 10:46 PM | At least, Kelemvor have the dispasionate, drab pro feeling. Dispassionate and drab works for Dustmen. Which are largely NE. Kelemvor is drab, but not dispassionate. He's very much LN with Good tendencies, yet claims neutrality. like a mortal doctorate Anyone who has attained a doctorate has already shown their passion for their chosen field. Which is why I dislike Kelemvor. He did absolutely nothing related to his 'field of interest' (death, the dead, souls, necromancy) to gain his 'doctorate.' He was basically handed a 'degree' for free. |

| Soltares05-27-07, 11:04 PM | Jergal is the coolest of the death-gods, IMO (especially the notion of him being pre-human/demihuman, putting him in pretty exclusive company with Semuanya and possibly Aerdrie Faenya), although Myrkul was also a favorite. Kelemvore was a fairly self-absorbed and bland human who has become, qu'elle surprise, a fairly self-absorbed and bland god. It's funny, I dragged my entire gaming group over to the Realms (including converting a Greyhawk diehard and a Dragonlance fanatic), only to get discouraged with the setting after the Time of Troubles became canon and was carried over into 3.0 with a lack of support for stuff that the novels killed off. (My own bad luck that I extensively used Banites as foes and Lleirans as NPC foils.) Now it seems that Bane is back again, and Bhaal and Myrkul are both making plays to return. Perhaps by 4th Edition, I'll jump back on to a Realms that has returned to supporting the setting I was using pre-novel-god-killin'-madness. It will be refreshing to return to a Realms where the Cleric in the party has a better-than-average chance of not having to pick a new diety when his gets lured into a dark alley and ganked... |
| GothicDan05-27-07, 11:06 PM | I actually did like Jergal the most, just a little more than Myrkul. The current Jergal is, in my opinion, truly LN. I really liked how Faraer talked about how FR's deities were largely created with the common perceptions of their portfolios in mind, by the masses of the continent. Auril and winter are 'evil' because they are times of death and stasis and lack of food; storms are evil because they destroy. The vast majority of people do everything possible to avoid death. That doesn't sound like they have a "neutral" opinion of it. Not everything that is natural must be well-received or even neutral. Plagues are natural, as is pain, lust, love, etc. And those deities have alignments that are non-neutral, too. |
| XHereticX05-28-07, 10:17 AM | And all in all, as ancient and mysterious deities in the Realms have been made as of third edition, the whole thing with mortal conceptions of their portfolios defining them still says that they depend on mortals for their power and are nothing without them. Yeah, I hate the fact they killed off so many cool gods in ToT, but I guess it was necessary to have some giant Realms shaking event like Chaos War in DL and Greyhawk Wars in Greyhawk, just to forward the setting's plot. Still, I agree with most, Kelemvor isn't bad that he is a non-evil death god, its just that he is so plain and bland with too many mortal flaws that it bores me half to death. Now Jergal, that is LN death done right. |

I'm a big fan of Jergal too. :) With Myrkul and Bhaal gone, Orcus incacipated, and Moander still rotting in some tomb there seem to be no good deities of death/decay left. Last I heard, Orcus was back (since Dead Gods) and very active? Unless there's something more recent. In FC1 he was definitely around. |
| Zanan05-29-07, 04:03 AM | Orcus is indeed back, yet not that active in the Realms as yet. Or, in other words, he has a few clerics here and there among some rabble barbarians. |
