Wizards in most cultures converge at mageschools. What schools are famous for their necromantic wizards? Or is necromancy an art mostly hidden from the general populace of a city or state in FR?

In my campaign I placed a "white" necromancer school in Cimbar in Chessenta. This school has many mulan mages of the Tothep clan and is led by a chondotan LG necromancer Ionasa Morieth. Their experimental department focusses on blending southern magic with necromantic shadowmagic spells. This school has learned to lessen the cost of arcane healing spell research and has supplied the Chessentan empire with scrolls of healing at a reduced prizes.

I want to make a similar school but of black necromancy. What do you think is a good possible location for a more evil wizard school? Would they search the battlefields for test bodies and be outlaws for disturbing the graves of the citizans? These schools are more likely to hoard their knowledge and hold bitter rivalries. Could they act in the open in a lawful good city?

I'm pretty sure they already exist in Thay. ;)

Also, Halruaa might have one or two, but most likely attached to larger universities. Since the black necromancer Random started spreading Southern Magic secrets, necromancers' prestige has lessened in the country.

Calimshan might also be good, and maybe as an extension Amn and/or Tethyr, what with the rampant vile villains running around, and the patronage of that wonderfully undead organization, the Twisted Rune. I would love to see Shoon and the Rune team up and start great, terrible necromantic schools/cults in the sands under Calimshan. But I have a huge thing for necromantic empires, for some reason.

Perhaps places of Cult of the Dragon power, too - hidden ones in Sembia.

-The Eastern Wastes! Think about it...It's spacious, has no real governments to get in the way, has mysterious ruins from ancient civilizations, and is littered from the dead from the Tuigan Horde.

So most necromantic schools are considered evil? They cant operate within a lawful society unless its run by the necromancers themselves (such as in Thay)? The clergies of Velsharoon are hidden most of the time right?

Who was this Random figure?
