Ioun is one of the new deities from D&D 4th Edition. A deity devoted to knowledge and prophecy, she is one of several new deities your characters will be able to devote themselves to in the new edition.

Hey.. really....

I hope this is not true...
I dont want my FR being recycled for the general game.
Ioun as far as I am concerned was a Netherese arcanist...

Congenio Ioun, he, not she, arcanist inventor, created Congenio's Pebbles later known as Ioun stones

-This isn't Congenio Ioun, don't worry. Congenio Ioun was a 'he', and this 'Ioun' is a 'she'. This is also 'Core', and not 'Forgotten Realms'. 'Core' and 'Forgotten Realms' have a lot of differences for common items and races. The Forgotten Realms has a totally different origin for Kobolds than any other setting.

-So, don't worry. And, hey, look at it like this. There were two Wulgreths, right? So, why can't there be two Iouns? It's a big multiverse out there...

Alias the dragon and Karsus the gnome.

Ioun is a reference/homage to Vance's Dying Earth, just like D&D modified the concept of Ioun stones in Vance's stories. The FR Netherese arcanist no doubt was another reference, or rather an origin story.
Faraer

I think Congenio Ioun was one of Dale Henson's many mistakes. Jack Vance already gave ioun stones an origin -- they didn't need a parallel domestic Realms one.

well, I guess...
It is just a little bit annoying, because I was hoping for a unified cosmology, and having two inventors with the same name for the same thing is kind of weird... but well.. I guess the multiverse is weird.

Even so.. it is sort of a little bit distressing.
I think this Ioun goddess makes the existence of the arcanist awkward.

I don't think the designers care all that much about a dozen big names or entire nations in past lore let alone a single obscure name. You're right this is not the end of the world, instead they have the Spellplague for that. ;)

It looks to me like repeating the disrespectful (to Vance) mistake Dale made.

Just what is the Vancian origin for them anyway? Do Ioun stones even work the same in Vance's work as they do in D&D?
Faraer

03-13-08, 11:52 PM
Yes, roughly the same.

MAJOR SPOILER FOR RHIALTO THE MARVELLOUS:
The nonhuman archveults gather the IOUN stones from the centres of dead stars.

-I don't think so. There have been plenty of instances of parallel development of things in our history. I see no reason why similar instances wouldn't happen in the D&D worlds. I appreciate when items/races/classes/PrCs are given in-house explanations.

I think this Ioun goddess makes the existence of the arcanist awkward.
Well... anyway... it is not the end of the world.

Don't be so sure to dismiss the idea that FR is not going to be Core.

They claim there is no Core anymore, and they sing the praises of "One rules to rule them all".

And yet, when you watch that video from the Con, you clearly see that the Forgotten Realms NO LONGER HAS A LOGO!!!

No logo = Core... except there isn't any core.

They are playing the word game here... if it smells like a fish, looks like a fish, etc...

They say there is no core just because they don't want an outcry from us.

Note - Eberron has a logo still - if it its true that FR isn't core, then NONE of the settings should have a logo. Why is FR being singled out? They say the new core world doesn't really exist... but they are creating stuff for it... stuff we can easily 'plug-in' to FR...

Its all BS, man, wait and see... :nonono:
Alediran

I noticed that too, another thing to be ****** of. FR will be as bland as Greyhawk during 3rd edition. WotC has basicaly killed FR as a separate setting.

FR has become the gaming equivalent of the 'Town Dump'. :(

Lots of cool things in the dump, but in the end, the place is still a dump.
Stigger

03-14-08, 08:10 AM
But like a dump, you can take a trip down, sift through the garbage, and bring home something useful once in a while...

Of course having said that, I've never even been remotely interested in sifting through one... too much work for the payoff as far as I'm concerned. ;) :D

I appreciate the information about the origin of Ioun stones (ie. in the Vance stories).:)

All that being said...well, I just see this as an example of "core" information that may not apply to the Realms.

I like the way you are thinking, but then Congenio would not be the inventor of the famous stones, since he came after.

-Or, in the Forgotten Realms, he was. Ioun Stones existed in other Crystal Spheres, but had yet to appear on Abeir-Toril. However he did, Congenio Ioun knew what the item was, and mass produced the first Ioun Stones to appear on Abeir-Toril.

-This is my presonal opinion. Most of the changes are because of the "Living Realms." Not trying to start a flame war, just my smelly opinion.:P Think about it changing some areas to be the dungeon regions or just off limits. Waterdeep, Cormyr, Balders Gate, The Dalelands, and The Empire of Shade:rolleyes: will probably be the major regions amongst others. Its the first setting that is getting released, so the bugs can get ironed out. What better way than through the RPGA. Player and administer feedback can show what needs errata. I could be wrong though.

I don't mind the class updates, I don't mind the changes to races, although I still don't like what they've done with the Tiefling, let alone the Aasimar... I'm actually so disgusted with these changes that I probably will not buy any 4th edition Forgotten Realms Products. And let me tell you, I bought a lot.

By the way, I have discovered another flaw in the Spellplague.

Why haven't dragons gone nuts/freaked out/turned into cheese and pumpkins? They cast mighty magics too, and when the weave goes, thither go their sorcerer levels and draconic abilities.
MarkusTay63

Naw, it affected them differently... all they lost were their alignments.

I'll buy the FRCG, more out of morbid criousity then anything else (plus it will probably be useful in converting my current-year game to 4e rules).

Only if it totally knocks my socks off will I buy anything else FR, but I really don't see that happening at this point.
Stigger

03-16-08, 04:50 PM
I don't really expect it to be that difficult to convert to 4e if Saga is any indication. Slightly annoying at first, but relatively fast and easy once you get the hang of it. Can't say I'm even planning on buying the FRCG, even out of curiosity... not much more than the PHB, DMG, MM, and maybe a few of the item/spell related stuff depending on whether I like the new format or not.

-Don't think about the fact that you were pretty much 10 when she was just born, though. Or the fact that, when you were in high school, she was really just starting kindergarten. Or...
She in the army so, If she's old enough to kill....:D
There's also the act that I look younger (people usually think that I'm 19-21ish) and that

I actually don't think a 10 year gap is that big of a deal (provided, of course, that both parties are adults). It's kind of funny to imagine the age difference as kids (ie. one a baby, the other well into elementary school), but if both people click, that's what counts.:)

Thanks Rin :D I KNEW you were going to see things my way
Rinonalyrna Fathomlin

-I've been told that you take your age, add the digits together, and the appropriate ages you can date are plus and minus that. So, for example, I am 21. 2+1 is 3. So, it'd be okay for me to date a person anywhere between 18 and 24.

-A little silly, but whatever...

I think so.:) What matters, in my opinion, is what you are comfortable with.

Note, though, that I have found (through experience) that age in itself is not the best indicator of maturity.
Rinonalyrna Fathomlin

Well, suffice to say I have experience with age gaps like that--I've had a boyfriend who was 14 years older than me (yes, really). I'm not with him anymore, but the age difference didn't bother me.

I was aware, however, that it could have mattered more down the years (ie. 40 years old is different from 60 years old).

Well, so long as your both happy, regardless of the age gap, then I'm all for you both and I hope you find happiness. :)

Strangely enough, I found you have to NOT want it, for it to become widely available. Its like women can sense when you're not interested, and they take it as a personal affront.

Time and time again I found myself in rather akward situations, and said "WTF?"

It happens when you least expect it, and it is not nearly as 'great' as people make it sound.

Before I was married, and a total geek, I couldn't get la_d in a w__rehouse.

After I was 'taken', its like an 'alarm' went off or something... weird.... :nonono:

So LK, just stop looking for it... your time will come... ;)

-It's not as if I walk around, hitting on random people. Contrary to popular belief, I am nothing like that. Hell, when I see people I sort of know, I don't even say anything. Like, just the other day, I ran into someone I knew in high school, at Staples. I didn't say anything.

I've lived for the moment all my life. On one hand, it's handy if you just go though life making it up as you go, but on the other hand, you find when you do make plans, they seemingly tend to fall through. Really demoralizing. My hat is off to you however for going into basic training and the military. I hope that whatever you do, you remain safe from harm. As much as chicks may dig the scars, being in a body bag is a turn off for most women. :P

You know the one that gets a medal for keeping the battalions morale up. If you know what I mean.;) What I learned is you never get married in the service with out expecting a divorce. Go go to the field and there she is at the NCO Club, messing around on ya. When I was stationed in Korea, people would say they were TDY(Temporarly Divorced for a Year). The story of the guy the was deployed for 6 months and his wife is 4 months pregnet(sp) when he comes home. Not every story ends in disaster. Just tell them they are not special, just next. It's probably a bad sign that one of my first thoughts was "Look on the bright side, you have kids!" huh? I mean sure, you missed half the fun of making the little beasties, but it's not like you'll miss out on making the next ones. Provided you don't do a real divorce...

Sidenote: I never claimed to be sane.

Think I tend to be more like LK in most respects... not even sure I consider my players truly friends... my wife is the only person I think that I truly consider my friend.

As to booty calls... haven't indulged in those since I got married, but a lot of it has to do with how comfortable you are with your own body. Dancing I found to be a very good way of getting them... maybe its the latin blood thing with our hips actually moving while dancing, but it usually worked for me. :D

Yep, and they don;t have em in 4e, nor do they have the whole Chromatic=evil, metallic=good, gemstone=neutral anymore. So, the Spellplague FUBAR'ed them too. :)
