It's pretty common knowledge that Azuth was the first Magister, and that before gaining divinity he battled Savras (and won), my question is more about what he did as a mortal. He must have been a pretty powerful wizard (even with the Magister's powers) to take on a deity. Where did he come from, was he Netherese? Imaskari? Someplace else? Did Elminster know him? If he really was that powerful was he on par with people like Ioulam and Larloch?

Good question... don't think it's ever been detailed to my knowledge though. I suspect there's something going on with his history being hidden much as is the case with Red Knight.

I have been reading forgotten realm books for years and I have never heard them say much about Ao or The red knight.

Secrets of the Magister (2e) basically states "there's no reliable records and he's not talking."

Maybe, to use a bit from our religions, he was the 'first'? First mage, or something....

From what I can gather, he became a diety after Karsus's folly (as he was Mystra's consort, not Mystral's) and before Elminister became a chosen. Some estimate he ascended around the dawn cataclysm.

He battled Savras after Savras ascended, and Savras was a Halruaan diviner...Halruaa was founded after the Fall of Netheril. Azuth studied Netherese ruins as a mortal. He is also noted to have invented numerous prototypes that have become common magic items nowadays. He obviously ascended after the Fall of Netheril, but whether he was alive during the time or not, who knows.

There are hints here and there that Azuth may have been from south, possibly the Calimshan or Lake of Steam area, but nothing conclusive. His first temple was near Lhair, so Halruaa could also be a candidate for his origin, but that is where Savras was from, and the temple near Lhair might simply have been an ex-Savras temple that switched to the Azuthan faith after he defeated Savras and ascended to godhood. The Halruaans seem to have enthusiastically converted from Savras to Azuth after Savras's imprisonment.

Savras started out as a Halruaan wizard, so that is a strong indicator that Savras ascended to godhood after the fall of Netheril in -339 DR. Of course, we cannot rule out an earlier origin for Savras if he was, say, Lapaliiyan and simply hailed from the Lake Halruaa area.

Best guess is that Azuth ascended to godhood sometime around 136 DR, when the 2nd magister took office, but no later than 147 DR by which time he was definitely a god and his church establishes his first Temple, the House of the High One Ascendent in the mountains near Lhair.

Azuth took on Savras while Azuth was still a mortal but Savras was already a god. Magic of Faerun says that once the conflict between the two began, it lasted for several years and involved agents, traps and spell-duels.

Azuth was the first Magister, and The Magister sourcebook indicates that Mystra established the office of the Magister in response to the Dawn Cataclysm, which suggests strongly that the Dawn Cataclsym itself had to have happened (or at least started) a number of years before 136 DR.

According to Magic of Faerun, Azuth is said to have studied with Mulhorandi wizards, learned from elven high mages of Cormanthyr, studied genie magic in Zakhara, traded spells with Halruaan wizards, explored Netherese ruins... he got around.
