A question regarding the rules for creating your own mythals. When created, mythals are centered on a point chosen by the caster. By that logic, is it then possible to have that point actually be the caster himself, or an item he happens to be carrying? I'm wondering if it is thus possible to make a mythal "portable" in that fashion. And yes, I'm aware that it would probably fall under the descriptor of powergaming, but I can't see a specific place in the rules where it says that it isn't possible.

-Mythals are anchored, meaning they are set upon a single, immobile centerpoint.

-What you want is a mantle, which in laymans terms, is a much weaker "mini-Mythal" that surrounds the caster.

Where would I be looking for the rules regarding mantles, then? At first glance, they don't seem to be in Lost Empires of Faerun, or Magic of Faerun, which would be the first two places I can think of to look ('course, I might just be suffering from temporary blindness).

-Offhand, I don't know. Sorry.

Alleran, the info you need to create spell mantles is in Lost empires of faerun, on page 111-112. it has background on how the netherese used spell mantles and offers a feat to assist in the creation and use of these mantles.

Hehe. I guess I was suffering from temporary blindness, then. Thanks. :)

I had (and still have) an article I'd written called "The Magic of Mantles" that the edition change stymied in terms of getting published. I'm waiting for the 4E rules to come out to see if I can tinker with it and get it published this time.

The Mantle spell can be found in the 2Ed supplement Secrets of the Magister.

I created a template for it but you need the book for some of the effects as they are more detailed then I felt I needed to be in the template. If you are interested in the template, PM me your email address and I will send it to you.

I think the Arcane Age supplements (which are available for free download on the wizards website) also discuss Mythals. There may be some interesting insights may be worth checking out.

-Correct. Both Cormanthyr: Empire of the Elves, and The Fall of Myth Drannor talk about Mythals. In addition, check out the essay on Mythals in Elves of Faerūn, the link to which is in my sig.

isnt it true that anchoring a mythal only reduces the spellcraft check to make it, thus would require some seriously huuuge spellcraft to create a self centered mythal no?
