| boards06-26-07, 08:36 AM | The weave is the filter by which magic can be harnessed but only exists within the Material Plane, Cynosure? and Dweomerheart. When gods are on the Material Plane they apparently have to use the weave rather than raw magic, but they do not on the planes. This implies that planar magic is not raw magic. Is there a place where raw magic exists without any type of filter? |

As far as the other planes of existence are concerned, there has never been any conrete lore on whether they use a similar concept to the 'weave' or something else. There has never been any need for it as in 2e 10th level true spells and higher were used mechanicaly in the Realms and not Planescape. Epic feats of magic did occur in the other planes but there were other checks and balances and no concrete mechanics were given. these feats were also performed by powerful outer planar beings, natives to their layers. For example demon lords could sense powerful spells (9th level or beyond) and counter them or even use them to strike back at the caster. I assume the various powerful panar lords were able to do the same. Further, the very nature of the outer and inner planes outright prohibited or inhibited many schools and types of magic from functioning. Perhaps in the Outlands or the deep Ethereal/Astral, regions of raw magic exist since both (astral and ethereal not the Outlands) of these planes revolve around the concepts of creation and possibility but I do not think any were described. |

Cynosure has the dead magic trait, and Mystra's ability to forbid beings from casting spells in Dweomerheart is due to the planar magic traits of that plane and/or her status as the head of the deities of magic in the Faerunian pantheon. |

Although there may be other worlds or planes that suffer from the same magical defect as Toril. Also, someone who knew how, could probably access raw magic directly on Toril if he/she so desired. The Weave being much easier to use, I doubt that you would find anyone around who knows, or teaches any decent use of raw magic. (For high level spells to have been developed using that, a culture would have needed to focus its research on methods to use it, and use it well) Spellfire wielders aren't too far from being basic raw magic users though. |

Hmm, I thought the weave only existed on the planet of Toril in the prime material, thats it. |

The OP mentioned Cynosure and Dweomerheart as possible planes where the Weave might also exist, but Magic of Faerun tells us it is exclusive to Toril. Magic on Cynosure and Dweomerheart are instead governed by their own respective planar magic traits, as covered in the Player's Guide to Faerun. |

Hmm, does the weave exist on continents like Kara-Tur even though I don't remember if Mystra has a prescence there or not. Or is someone else the caretaker of the weave there. |
| Zsych06-26-07, 10:17 PM | Mystryl was one of the early goddesses, from before there were any mortals to worship gods. Most likely, Shar, Selune, Mystra and the others, would at least survive without worship(no matter how much weaker they've gotten over time). ... and some suggest that the act of casting a spell can also be considered an act of worship to Mystra. Maybe having faith in magic, is like worship to Mystra, because on Toril, she is magic. (Although that may change some as the Shadow-weave becomes more popular) |
