I'm not sure if this is in the right section or not, so just move it if it isn't.

Now I want to make a pair of boots that simply increase your speed (+10, +20 and +30 final), but i'm not sure how i should figure out the cost.

Now i saw a article on magic item creation that said even though the type of enhancement might not be listed in the books I should still follow the general guidelines for enhancements. So how would I calculate a enhancement bonus to speed?

Now I looked at the Boots of striding and springing, which when broken down confuses me.

Boots of Striding and Springing: These boots increase the wearer's base speed by 10 ft. In addition to the striding ability (considered an enhancement bonus), these boots allow the wearer to make great leaps. She can jump with a +5 competence bonus on Jump checks.
Moderate Transmutation; Cl 3rd; Craft Wonderous Item, longstrider, creator must have 5 ranks in the Jump skill; Price: 5,500gp

so using the foruma for the Skill bonus (bonus squared X 100) you get 2,500gp for the Jump, and a left over 3,000gp for the Striding (+10 movement).

But if you were use the foruma as if the spell LongStrider is in continueous use
(Spell Level 1st X Caster level 1 X 2000) X 1 (no adjustment for hour/level)
you end up with a cost of 2000gp

So where did the extra 1000gp come from? perhaps they forgot about the fact that the spell is hour per level and not 10 minutes per level which would multiply spell cost by 1.5 equalling 3000?
and what about the 'multiple different uses' multiplier?

Okay I'll stop on those boots cause thats not the point.

Now i thought about using the spell Expeditious Retreat as the base for the boots, which would come out something like:
(Spell Level 1 X Caster Level 1 X 2000) X 2 (Spell is minutes/level) =
4,000gp for +30
2,650gp for +20 (cost X 2/3)
1,350gp for +10 (cost X 1/3)

But that also seem kind of wierd. 4,000 Gp for a +30 enhancement bonus to speed.

So tell me what you think about this. Does the 4000Gp seem alright? What's up with those Boots of Striding and Sprining?

I think the extra 1000 gp is from the fact that it has multiple uses.

As for the boots, perhaps you could use haste as your base spell (just b/c another spell fits doesn't mean that you have to use/allow it). That would put it at 5x3x2000x4 = 120,000!

Another thing to consider is that Horseshoes of speed grant a 30' enhancement bonus to speed for wairing all four and cost 3000 gp. In that case, it might not seem so bad.

If you don't like any of that, look to your monk for inspiration. Monks gain a +30' enhancement bonus at 9th level. You can make that the minimum level to make the boots using expeditious retreat; thus, the cost would be 9x1x2000x2 = 36,000 gp.

In the end, the equations in the dmg are ment to be a guide so use them to guide and don't be a slave to them. You just need to remember to fit it in with your campaign. Other limitation may be the creator has to have X number of levels of monk to qualify to create the item (similar to cloaks of elvenkind). This limitation would help keep the boots a rare and precious find.

I hope this helps.
