Shadowstorm, thoughts about it in 4e context [Archive] - Wizards Community

I just read Shadowstorm today and I have to say that it was one of my more enjoyable reads as of recent (Dante's Divine Comedy is rather dull and the Republic is just a pile of rhetoric).

So I am wondering how this whole Shadowstorm debacle will cause some of the cosmic changes that result with 4e. What is Shar's motivation behind it and how it ties in to her greater plans.

-With Shar? Who knows.

-Before AGHotR was released, I had this whole good theory about the remnants of Sembia becomming a theocratic state, dedicated to Lathander, by Abelar, but as AGHotR mentioned nothing of that, I guess not.

-Heh, I always loved old textbooks that had things like, "Go to pg. 52", and then there'd be a picture of, like, an elephant or something, with the words "Your mom" written above it. Classic stuff. :)

-Getting back on topic, looking at the actual title of the thread, I don't think the Shadowstorm itself has anything to do with 4e. The effects of the Shadowstorm will be seen in 4e, though.

I think WoTC might use the Shadowstorm events as a way to get rid of the Shadow Weave in 4e. Tie it in with the Spellplague a little.

Normally, I feel exactly as you do, but I needed to make it reference-worthy again. the color-coding was a tremendous asset in the original, so I considered it a 'restoration', of sorts.

Besides, I do plan on eventually buying a second copy to keep in pristine shape - this one is my beat-on day-to-day one. :D

Of course, of course. Though most people probably don't even know who Rich Baker is, so they woudn't care one way or another.

Some people (friends mostly) know I play D&D.

Rich Baker's own economic implosion will stop him. Eventually, with old FR fans angry at the changes, and potential new fans still intimidated by the vast amount of lore (yes, the long and tedious history is still there) as well as attracted to more "adventurous" settings like Eberron, the 4e FR franchise will go out of business and be back in the hands of Ed Greenwood, where it rightfully belongs.

So, when Mystra dies, and the Weave unravels, so too does the Shadow Weave.

I might be wrong, but I've read the blurb at the end of the History of the Realms book (much to my chagrin), and isn't Shar involved in Mystra's death? If Mystra's death would cause the Shadow Weave to unravel then I don't think she'd be too keen on it...

Unless it has to do with (POSSIBLE SPOILER - AVERT YOUR EYES!!!)

the moment of necessary weakness mentioned in the Shadowbred series.

-Exactly. One theory is that she sacrifices the Shadow Weave to accomplish her ultimate goal.

-The entire Shadow Weave story has recently been retconned again by Rich Baker in the 'Ask-the-Author' thread, again, so I don't know anymore...

-The entire Shadow Weave story has recently been retconned again by Rich Baker in the 'Ask-the-Author' thread, again, so I don't know anymore...

I'd say that it was un-retconned (instead of a retcon of a retcon), since the blurb on Shadowdale (or Cormyr? can't remember) was confirmed as an actual error and not them changing their minds because it was convenient to them. And thus, the text on Magic of Faerūn has been vindicated and contains the 'canon' explanation of the Shadow Weave: Shar made it, it is not a "shadow" or "echo" of the original Weave, it is not weaker nor more powerful, it is different, it does not depend on Mystra's well being and can function independent from the Weave if it were to fail.
Lord Karsus

01-20-08, 06:23 AM

Paul S. Kemp said recently that the Shadowstorm had nothing to do with any events regarding the 4E. Whether it will go away with the Spellplague or something, we'll never know.

I just hope that the designers show more common sense with regard to this novel series and the FR-bits and pieces they spill about than what they have done with the Lady Penitent or Haunted Lands - series

-We don't know necessarily for sure if Shar created the Shadow Weave. She could of "found it" somewhere and brought it to Faerūn. She could have stole it from Mystra, as the Shadowdale module implied, before that retcon was overruled.
Zsych

01-27-08, 11:53 AM
Created by Shar after studying the Weave was the original version though.
And something that existed outside of the Realms where Realms style raw magic wasn't the underlying basis of magic, couldn't possibly serve as a Weave equivalent, even if it could be brought over... That and the fact that the Shadow-weave is practically the same as the weave where most spells are concerned, its functionality should be different from the Weave, if it isn't linked and wasn't created to be like the Weave.

... and stolen from Mystra(translated as stealing a piece of Mystra herself)... don't think something that shocking would've happened with no one knowing about it.

-Until this was brought to the attention of Ricahrd Baker in the 'Ask the Author' thread, this was the official story, as per the Anauroch module. It went against what was said in Magic of Faerūn and explained that the Shadow Weave is a part of the Weave, but a part that Mystra cannot access, and is in under the control of Shar.

Hmm, but the part that this theory dosen't explain is why it took so long for Shar to learn how to fully utilize it.

My personal theory is that The Shadow Weave and the Weave were once one, the light and dark parts of magic, which were both controlled by a neutral deity of magic. After the NG Midnight ascended, the Shadow Weave broke off from the Weave in response to this dilemma and eventually it fell to Shar to maintain it.

It has lots of flaws, but I think it works for me right now.

-What do you mean? Why, in game, it didn't appear until 1372 DR? Certain elements have been retconned to include the Shadow Weave in the past.

-That was what Melgaunt Tanthul said in the Return of the Archwizards trilogy, but Magic of Faerūn trumps his personal feelings, as it outright states that Shar created the Shadow Weave back when she was first feuding with Mystryl and Selūne, back in the mists of time.
