| The_Shaman12-02-07, 11:22 AM | I was looking for some info on the deities of Faerun and I came to some site that looked quite legit. I queried this and that, and eventually wondered what they have on Sharess. I saw something very strange: in her "Opposed deities" column are listed Gruumsh, Ghaunadaur and... Elistraee. The last one struck me as, to put it mildly, odd. Am I missing something really big there? The idea that Sharess would have any bad blood with Eilistraee is, imo, fairly absurd - especially if one considers that even Set didn't make the list. The only connection I can make is that a deity that Bast-Sharess absorbed once had a dalliance with Vhaerun (which iirc resulted in Selvetarm's birth), but that is both fairly minor and long, long time ago. So is there something that I have not read/seen, or is the above site not very reliable? |
| Stigger12-02-07, 11:28 AM | Well, Powers & Pantheons lists her enemies as Set, Shar, and Loviater... and F&P only confirms that. So my guess is that the site was unreliable. |
| Lord Karsus12-02-07, 03:11 PM | -I don't see any reason why Sharess and Eilistraee would have any kind of animocity towards one another. In fact, I would think that they would actually be allies, or at least cordial friends, due to the facts that were highlighted above, concerning Selvetarm and Vhaeraun. |
| Storm_Silverhand12-02-07, 04:33 PM | Heya, The only connection I can make is that a deity that Bast-Sharess absorbed once had a dalliance with Vhaerun (which iirc resulted in Selvetarm's birth), but that is both fairly minor and long, long time ago. So is there something that I have not read/seen, or is the above site not very reliable? That deity that Bast absorbed was Zandilar the Dancer, one of the ancient Yuirwood deities. She was a goddess of love, particularly of the passionate physical kind - which is how that part of Bast's own nature was reinforced to overshadow her aspect as a war goddess. The story goes that when the elves of the Yuirwood began to falter in a series of attacks by the drow, Zandilar took it upon herself to seduce Vhaeraun either to gain information or to elicit his assistance in battling the forces of Lolth. Unfortunately for her, this backfired and Vhaeraun imprisoned her in order to drain her divine power. However, Bast happened to be in the vicinity and came across them in the woods. She was able to distract Vhaeraun long enough for Zandilar to free herself and the two goddesses fled. Zandilar was sorely wounded and was dying, and so she chose to merge her essence with Bast out of both gratefulness for Bast's assistance, and sheer necessity. If anything, that story should make Eilistraee more sympathetic towards Sharess, not less (and vice versa)... However, not knowing the site you were looking at, maybe they were thinking that since Eilistraee absorbed Vhaeraun, that might have made them foes? I can't think of any other reason why these two goddesses might be enemies. Sharess herself might view Eilistraee just as much of a victim of Vhaeraun as Zandilar was - since absorbing him has irrevocably changed her (and not for the better. :() |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-02-07, 04:44 PM | The linked site seems to be a fan site, not an official FR site, so there is no reason to take anything written there for granted. And of course, there is a such thing as human error in any case.:) |
| The_Shaman12-02-07, 06:26 PM | Well, I thought something like that myself. I had sometimes checked the site for some information, and so far I hadn't seen anything grossly wrong. @Storm: Is that it? It sounds possible, now that I think of it. I was wondering what happened to Sharess's martial side - it's almost never mentioned in the setting material*, and she was/is a war deity in Mulhorand. It's one of the reasons I was interested in her - I find the concept of a goddess of love and war quite fascinating, and spent a lot of time wondering how someone who was Anhur's right hand and Set's fiercest enemy became known almost exclusively for her patronage of festhalls and similar establishment. *: the only mentions I remember was in the flavor text of the Celebrant of Sharess PrC in PGtF, and some hints in the current developments of her church. |
| Zireael12-03-07, 09:49 AM | I think Storm is right... about consequences. |

Zandilar is not the only deity that Bast has absorbed. She also absorbed a beast cult deity (not sure if it was god or goddess) called Felidae, which would have reinforced her aspect as a cat. Now cats are renowned for being rather hedonistic (though their idea of hedonism is eating and sleeping in the sun, and not sex which I understand is rather painful for female cats, unless cats are kinky. :P). So she's had two aspects reinforced, but one that hasn't been. So of course her hedonism/pleasure and cats aspects overshadow her war aspect. Sharess is primarily worshiped in Calimport, and is fairly unknown elsewhere except Mulhorand, where she's worshiped as Bast. (Personally I'd say if Sharess is going to make a major breakthrough anywhere else it would be Cormyr where cats are revered.) |
| Stigger12-03-07, 04:31 PM | Because of Sharess they are revered in Cormyr... that and Tressym are just darned cute. ;) Though as I recall, several of the human tribes in the Arnarden worship her as well, as do the wemic. |

I can say that my cat enjoys cuddling/being stroked as well as sleeping and eating.:) |
| Lord Karsus12-04-07, 10:05 AM | (though their idea of hedonism is eating and sleeping in the sun, and not sex which I understand is rather painful for female cats, unless cats are kinky. :P) -Very off-topic, but why would sex be painful for a female cat? Were it, female cats would activley avoid sex (provided that their hormones allow them to), which is doom for the species. |

I think Storm is talking about how the male cat's reproductive organ is barbed to stimulate ovaluation. But I don't think that means the whole act of sex is painful--I think that's just at the end. You can actually watch a video of two cats mating on the cat page on Wikipedia (if you are so inclined) to see what happens. It all seems normal until at the very end.:) |

Leave it to evolution to come up with the wackiest things...:) You can actually watch a video of two cats mating on the cat page on Wikipedia (if you are so inclined) to see what happens. | The_Shaman12-04-07, 10:52 AM | Ouch. But how on Earth can anything stimulate... Actually, I'm not sure I want to know. Thanks, though. @Storm: Hmm, interesting. I had heard of the two deities, but for some reason I considered them one and the same. Apparently Bast-Sharess has been quite busy, I guess. On the other hand, cats can be quite vicious... and particularly the larger ones might have been considered affiliated with stalking and hunting. Would you know if Sharess has any influence over such activities? I always wondered that a ranger or barbarian who feels spiritual kinship with a great cat think of her. |

Both deities have some dominion over cats, and as far as I'm concerned that would include big cats too. Nobanion, though, seems to be more associated with big cats (Lions in particular), while Sharess seems to be more associated with smaller (both wild and domestic) cats. Nobanion is LG, while Sharess is CG so who the individual ranger or barbarian feels an affinity for would likely depend on their alignment, their disposition (ie: their attitude towards nobility and/or pleasure), and also where they lived in the Realms. I don't have my books with me (they're all packed in boxes at the moment, and I won't have access to them until sometime next week), so I won't say much more at this point in time. |
| Kiioro12-04-07, 07:42 PM | I, too, can't find a good reason for those deities to be at odds with each other. They both aim for the same morality in their followers and the good things in life. I can't either see them battling over possible worshippers, as the good-aligned drow, as hedonistic as they can be, would probably know first (and more inclined) about Eilistraee. Sharess's followers would be in large amounts only in small areas, and I can't picture her going for "drow" in her portfolio, as humans and djinn-blooded humans would fit it better. Going off topic, though, from what I thought first when I saw the title... Sharess and Eilistraee: the hottest godly, interracial, animalistic lesbian action I would ever dare to dream of. |
| Lord Karsus12-04-07, 07:56 PM | Sharess and Eilistraee: the hottest godly, interracial, animalistic lesbian action I would ever dare to dream of. -Nah. You're missing Hanali Celanil. |
| Kiioro12-04-07, 08:06 PM | -Nah. You're missing Hanali Celanil. I'm not much of an elf fan (and probably she'd take the "animalistic" part out), but, hey, the more the merrier! I'm just not into Sune (with all due respect, Seņorita Fathomlin) or Loviatar-ish kinds of things. Hell, if it weren't for the evil part, I'd even make Malcanthet jump in! I must stop now, I'm not supposed to drool at work. |
| Lord Karsus12-04-07, 08:17 PM | I'm not much of an elf fan (and probably she'd take the "animalistic" part out), but, hey, the more the merrier! -Eilistraee is an Elf, don't forget. |
| The_Shaman12-05-07, 06:32 AM | Sharess and Eilistraee: the hottest godly, interracial, animalistic lesbian action I would ever dare to dream of. Hmm, not to diss Eilistraee, but Beshaba is no less hot imo. |
| Stigger12-05-07, 07:05 AM | Beshaba in F&P > everyone else in F&P Can't help it, it's the goth in me... |
| Kiioro12-05-07, 11:17 AM | Getting back on topic, what the page intended was probably to put Sharess and Eilistraee in good terms (it would probably be that way), yet they put the name in the wrong column. Maybe. Beshaba. Ooooh, Beshaba. was the first FR goddess a character of mine believed in. He had bad luck, she took care of that and was terribly hot, so... yeah. I know you're right, LK, just bear in mind that I seldom consider drows to be elves thanks to the humanoid cricket, she biased my opinion. When I think of "elf", I think of Mialee, when I think of Drow, I think of Lolth*. *Lolth in her hot, non-spidery form. |
| The_Shaman12-06-07, 04:55 AM | I don't know, some of Mialee's drawings weren't all that bad - there are already too many perfect-looking elves, so it's good to have something more down-to-earth. The quality of the images is tolerable too - speaking of F&P, remember how the elven deities were drawn there? Ouch. At least Mialee looks more or less normal... and fulfils an important function in D&D. As in, showing you the effects of making charisma your dump stat :) |
| sfdragon12-06-07, 05:58 AM | mialee's phb face was gosh aweful, they gave her a goblin head.. now she does have some decent artwork of herself out there, just the main one , doesnt help her. |
| Lord Karsus12-06-07, 07:49 AM | I know you're right, LK, just bear in mind that I seldom consider drows to be elves thanks to the humanoid cricket, she biased my opinion. | Kiioro12-06-07, 11:35 AM | Indeed, Lord Karsus. I think I worded my last entry quite... unsuccessfully, I meant: "I'll bear in mind to tell people that..." I promise to improve my english (I'll be in the US soon for a year, if everything goes all right). But, in the end, you're right, Lord Karsus, she's (Hanali) an elf. I stand by my "the more, the merrier comment", though, if they follow the guidelines of hotness. Not the half-thri-kreen-half-elf Mialee (or goblinoid, as sfdragon said). |
| Lord Karsus12-06-07, 12:50 PM | But, in the end, you're right, Lord Karsus... -Spend some more time 'round here, and you'll find out that that is a universal truth. :) |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-06-07, 02:42 PM | I was pretty unimpressed with many 3E elf depictions, not just Mialee. I did very much like the 4E elf sketch that I saw in one of the recent WotC articles, but sadly I can't remember where I saw it. |
| Zanan12-06-07, 05:23 PM | -Eilistraee is an Elf, don't forget. Honestly, LK, you should do better! Eilistraee is of course no elf, she is a goddess who likes to take the form of a dark elf. (And whether the latter, or even the drow, are indeed elves is subject to quite a bit of debate (amongst the drow)!) |
