As per the d20srd.org:

The food that this spell creates is simple fare of your choice—highly nourishing, if rather bland.

I have a priestess of Sharess in my campaign and it just doesn't seem right that the goddess of hedonistic fulfillment would be content to let her followers dine on '...rather bland' foods. Would it be entirely uncalled for if I allowed her version of said spell to create whatever delights the priestess desires, as long as they're not over 5gp per dish (so no get rich quick schemes), it only lasts 4 hours, so as to encourage gluttony and prevent hoarding - they're will always be more with sharess!

Any thoughts or ideas on this? I'm just trying to add a little fluff without unbalancing anything.

I don't see a problem with it. I think the Create Food and Water spell was originally meant to emulate "manna from Heaven" of Judaeo-Christian mythology, so bland but nutritious fits in with that. Sharess, however, would provide them good tasting food (it's essentially adding a 0th level spell to the base spell... one of the effects of Prestidigitation).

Heck, given the right setting, I don't think Sharess would have a problem with her priest using this to "make money". If it came in the form of a shrine to Sharess, and was described as the bounty of her, then wouldn't the very act of enjoying the food be a form of worship to Sharess?

excellent idea!

although i'd rather my players didn't try to rip off the local populace, it would be interesting to think about a mandarin-style all you can eat buffet based out of a sharessan temple. perhaps as long as the spell is cast by the highest level priestess whilst within an ordained temple, it will last for one day per level of the priestess' level - just going for some greenwood-esque style fluffery.

looks like my players are going to be dining upon, date and mint-rubbed lamb leg, tethyrian sauteed garlic oysters on the half-shell and fried calishite naan, washed back with a dark amber illuskan stout.

How are they ripping them off? The people are paying for food, the characters are providing food. They're going into business, which is hardly HEROIC, but it's not ripping them off.

although I trust my players dearly, they've manage to pull some exceptionally crafty schemes and scams from incredibly innocent beginnings. the reason i mentioned nothing worth more than 5gp is that i have players who would, given the chance, bog the game down by trying to run a fully franchised fast food stand within waterdeep as opposed to adventure or do anything beneficial to the group.

well, it's really only one, who'd rather count out all of his money whilst his allies storm dungeons and defend the cities from vile creatures, and i only worry because i'm loathe to have four people doing one thing and then one staying behind to do what someone with three levels in expert could do: franchiser of a restaurant.

Fine. Let him start a restaurant.

Then have the theives guild move in and ask for "protection" money so his restaurant doesn't have any "problems".

He'll blow them off. Might even blow the bad guys away.

Then some of his staff will get brutalized; how far you want to go is up to you, but I'd suggest some broken legs and arms, maybe full-scale murder if he keeps being stubborn... he's rich, he can bring them back to life.

Don't forget to firebomb the place if he keeps holding out.

Eventually, you have a new campaign hook: take out the theives' guild.

hah, i love that idea!

it really reminds me of the campaigns we used to have a decade ago when we all got into the game. you couldn't go a single session without something in town being firebombed whilst all the heroes ran off into the night scream and shrieking like the three stooges or national lampoon.

i think they'd be up for some nostalgia! ;)

My suggestion? Go to Barnes and Noble, Borders, or some similar store and buy Steven Brust's "The Book of Jhereg." Specifically, you want to read the book called "Yendi" which is in that volume (and can be bought separately, but you'll enjoy the books anyway). It's about a mob war in a high-magic society.

Add prestidigitation to her spell list? Visually pleasing effects, little tricks, and the like seem something that a Sharessan would enjoy anyway. Or you could simply point her towards the Heroes' Feast spell. Getting the deity to send you some food is one thing, but getting it to cook it properly is way more demanding imo :P
