| Aluroon06-25-07, 06:25 PM | Sometime ago (maybe two years ago or more) someone (and I don't remember who) posted a revised version of some kind of Spell Mantel spell from 2nd Edition, updated to 3.5. Just wondering if that person is still around, or if anyone still has a copy of it. |

Just wondering if that person is still around, or if anyone still has a copy of it. The closest thing i remember is the Sash of spells created by Karsus The Mad There could be a copy here: but i m not sure: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=548975 I think that our Mad arcanist will appear shorly and enlighten us on the matter ;) |

| The Simbul06-26-07, 11:50 PM | Just to clarify IN 3E-3.5 we have: 1) the Spell Mantle spell, added to the Cleric class spell list by taking the Initiate of Mystra feat. It allows you to choose specific spells that it will absorb, and in turn it will transform the spell energy into an equal level cure spell or a specific spell effect you choose when casting. 2) the Spell Mantle feat, as printed in Lost Empires of Faerun, which allows you to activate a contingent spell (created with the Craft Contingent Spell feat) using a standard action "as a spell-like ability" instead of waiting for it to be normally triggered by it's triggering conditions. In contrast, in 2E we have several types of mantle spells, the most (in)famous of which (and unlikely to ever be officially converted) being the one that appeared in Secrets of the Magister, and had been employed by the archwizards of Netheril and Imaskar, Magisters past and present, and Mystra's Chosen among others. In truth it was a hopelessly complex spell that covered multiple pages of text, and required the use of multiple spell slots to cast, and in turn bestowed multiple benefits on the caster (namely immunity specific selected spells, amplification other specific selected spells cast by the caster, granted immunity to various effects, allowed at-will use of various protective or mobility spells, and had the ability to store a number of spells that could later be unleashed by silent act of will). Bear in mind that neither of the Spell Mantles available in post-3E are of any close resemblance to the older concept of a "mantle". In the case of the Initiate of Mystra spell, it is basically just a enhanced version of spell immunity with a nice little added reversal to it (i.e. casting a spell mantle to absorb dimensional anchor spells and transform them into dimension door spells). In the case of the Netherese feat, it actually does not resemble a "mantle" at all--as in the ability to store and later release a spell by silent act of will was really was the signature trait of Baldrics, which also appeared in the same section of Secrets of the Magister. Baldrics, along with other spells of the days of AD&D (Sash of Spells, Algarth's Embattlement, Presper's Double Wizardry, etc) are much more in line with the purpose the Spell Mantle feat intends to serve now, as in they allowed you cast and then later "trigger" a spell. To put it more briefly, the ability to unleash a stored spell by silent act of will was just one of the many powers of the Mantle spell in AD&D, and of the powers it had, that one was arguably one of the weakest--and one best obtained through weaker and less dangerous magics (i.e. "baldrics"). |
| Aluroon06-27-07, 01:32 AM | Actually it was a conversion of the version from Secrets of the Magister that I'm looking for, I know it was posted some time ago. |
| Aluroon11-09-07, 02:30 PM | So to shamelessly bump myself no one remembers seeing said update or has a copy of it? |
| DMD11-09-07, 02:43 PM | I do not remember seeing one but I had created one. PM me your email and I will send you my template for it. As the Simbul said, it was so damn complex in 2E I actually had to create a 2 page template! I use it sparingly and only for a few NPCs. |
| Craig C.11-11-07, 01:39 PM | 2) the Spell Mantle feat, as printed in Lost Empires of Faerun, which allows you to activate a contingent spell (created with the Craft Contingent Spell feat) using a standard action "as a spell-like ability" instead of waiting for it to be normally triggered by it's triggering conditions. Spell Mantle + Craft Contingent = Excellent Combo! When you craft a contingent spell you do not pay the xp cost the spell uses until you activate the spell. Thus you would want to put heavy xp spells as your contingent spells such as Wish. Now if the target condition occurs for the craft contingent spell you will have to pay the XP cost. If you activate the spell mantle as a standard ability though you don't have to pay the XP cost for the spell isn't a spell it is now a spell like ability. Spell Like Abilities don't have xp or material costs. Thus one Wish would cost 9*17*50=7650 in GP and 9*17*4=612 in XP. Doing 5 Wishes in a row (for inherent bonuses) would cost 38250 gp and 3060 in xp. Significantly cheaper than the cost of crafting the equivalent tome (6,250 gp + 25,500 XP). You would have to wait to lvl 17 to do that, and you have to spend what 77 days to craft the spells you need. Additionally you can't use this trick on other people only yourself for the spell has to be one you can apply craft contingent spell on. |
| Krash11-11-07, 05:28 PM | I did a big 5000 word article intended for Dragon magazine on "mantles" but with the transition to 4E and the loss by Paizo of their licence, it had no takers. I pitched it to digital Dragon but didn't receive a response. It can languish on my HD till I see what spellcasting rules 4E presents us with. -- George Krashos |
