What do you think would be the effects of using a sphere of annihilation on a dead god's body in the astral? I know that many things COULD happen, just wondering what ideas people think WOULD happen. The things that come to my mind are: A) the "god" becomes a vestige since it has nothing remaining linking it to the "world" and its essence has been sent to the "void" B) the sphere of annihilation becomes a sentient repository for the god's will C) the sphere is affected as if a gate spell had been cast upon it |
| PharaunMizzrym07-03-07, 05:01 PM | I think its an awesome way to guarantee that a dead god doesn't get to come back into the realms. Patent the idea and try to sell it to Shar. Im sure she will let you be the last person she destroys. |
| Shemeska the Marauder07-03-07, 07:43 PM | Well for starters, you'd get the Guardian of Dead Gods (formerly known as the deity Anubis) incredibly unhappy with you. Think of flocks of astral dreadnaughts suddenly converging on your location, or Anubis himself manifesting to stop you. They already act to prevent mining or desecration of the godisles, but trying to destroy one would raise the stakes even higher. It's also possible that it might be impossible to bring a sphere of annihilation into the Astral. It might implode any gate into the Astral you try to move it into, or explode if you try to planeshift with one there. It's nature doesn't strike me as compatable with the Astral's. |
| PharaunMizzrym07-04-07, 12:46 AM | If there is such a God he did a real great job stopping the githyanki from using a godisle as their base. As for getting a sphere of annihilation into the astral, a wish or miracle would cover that (or reality warping if you're a deity). |
| Shemeska the Marauder07-04-07, 02:14 AM | If there is such a God he did a real great job stopping the githyanki from using a godisle as their base. Yes, there is such a god (and it's the reason why Anubis isn't there in the Mulhorandi pantheon, because he'd relinquished his mundane divinity long before his former fellows arrived on Toril). Also, the githyanki are quite careful in how they use dead gods. They build on them yes, and the Guardian doesn't much mind that since they don't actively mine them in a way that would damage them. |
| PharaunMizzrym07-04-07, 06:27 AM | In what sourcebook is this deity mentioned? |
| Shemeska the Marauder07-04-07, 10:57 AM | 'Guide to the Astral' 'On Hallowed Ground' 'Dead Gods' And I'm holding out hope that he might appear in one of the last issues of Dragon, but I'm not the author of the article in question he might show up in, so I can't say. And the details regarding Anubis/Guardian of the Dead Gods from those sources is then linked to Anubis's conspicuous absence from the Mulhorandi pantheon on Toril (and his name and absence have been mentioned at from time to time in at least one FR book and at least one web enhancement as I recall). |

It think there is more chance him showing up in another movie with "The Rock" personally. Perhaps the "Mummy III: Milking the Franchise" or "The Scorpion King II: The Anubis Smackdown." Just kidding Shemeska. Maybe he will get a mention. Be kind of nice if they touched on all the Discontinued Settings again like they have done before. I would agree though that a Sphere of Annihilation in the Astral would be bad. Even if it didn't cause immediate destruction, Githiyanki, especially the Lich Queen would be all over the PC to take it from them. |

Even if it didn't cause immediate destruction, Githiyanki, especially the Lich Queen would be all over the PC to take it from them. Only if they knew about it, and realistically, they wouldn't. Someone could port in, do their business and port out in a few minutes. That being said, the person that brought up the stability of a sphere of annihilation within the astral does bring up an interesting point. The item doesn't specifically state that the "void" that it sends things to isn't connected to the astral though, and since most things DO connect to the astral its probably still viable there. The part about Anubis, however... yes, that could put a canker into things. I'd imagine he "knows" when a body is tampered with and I could see him interfering. However, if someone were protected (and I'm not saying I've devised such protection) and put up wards to prevent gate spells from being cast in the area and worked to stop any rods of absorption from touching it... Could make for an interesting encounter at least. |
| PharaunMizzrym07-07-07, 03:17 AM | Anubis doesn't take any followers (at least that we know of on Toril), and deities have their power as of ToT tied into their number of worshipers. Would Anubis be greatly weakened because of this? |
| Gray Richardson07-07-07, 04:11 AM | Anubis might possibly rank now as a DVR 21 overdeity. He fits the profile. He does not accept worship or grant spells. He is no longer concerned with his pantheon or material planar affairs. He has taken on a position of guardianship roughly equivalent in scope to that held by Ao and High God--except over the god isles of the Astral, not of specific crystal spheres. I am not saying he definitely is one, but I think it is a good bet. :twocents: |
