Tempus and Bane in 4E [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-19-07, 10:34 AM After reading some of the preliminary stuff about Bane as a core deity in 4E it mentions him being a 'war god'. Now, I admit that his hierarchy is militaristic and he behaves much like an evil war god, but will he actually have the War portfolio? If so, what's the fate of Tempus going to be? Having those two duke it out could be interesting.

I've been theorizing for a while that there could be a split in the Church of Tempus along the Good/Evil line. The good side aligning with folks like Tyr and Torm and Lathander and the Evil with Garagos and Bane.

Any thoughts?

As I've said in other threads, just because Bane is a God of War in the Core Pantheon, it doesn't mean he'll become the God of War in the Realms. Many gods are members of several pantheons, and in each pantheon, they've got different Portfolios. So just because Bane has the Portfolio of War in the Core Pantheon, it doesn't mean he has it in the Faerunian Pantheon. Here're a couple examples of what I mean.

Tyr exists in the Faerunian Pantheon and the Asgardian Pantheon. In the Faerunian Pantheon, he's the Greater God of Justice. But in the Asgardian Pantheon, he's the Intermediate God of Courage, Trust, Strategy, Tactics, and Writing.

Lolth exists on both Oerth and Toril. On Oerth, she holds the Portfolios of Drow, Spiders, Evil, and Darkness. On Toril, she holds the Portfolios of Spiders, Evil, Darkness, Chaos, Assassins, and Drow. So in Faerun, she has two more Portfolios then she does in Oerth.

A more on point example is Bane, himself. This isn't the first time that Bane has turned up being worshipped on another world. He's also worshipped in Ravenloft. In Faerun he has the Portfolios of Hatred, Tyranny, and Fear. But in Ravenloft he has the Portfolios of Law, Fate, Judgment, Obedience, Order, Rulership, Tyranny. Tyranny is the only Portfolio he has in common in both worlds. He'll probably also have it in the Core Pantheon. But just like how he has the Portfolios of Law, Fate, Judgment, Obedience, Order, and Rulership in Ravenloft but not in Faerun, so too can he have the Portfolio of War in the Core Pantheon but not in Faerun.

As for calling Bane a war god in the Realms, it's probable that he just misspoke, conflating Core Bane for Faerunian Bane.

I guess I was just intrigued by the mention that Bane was the "Forgotten Realms' god of Tyranny and War." It didn't seem that the author was completely clueless as to the nature of the FR gods (but I could be wrong), so I figured that might be another of the 4E changes and that would therefore bring him into conflict with Tempus or necessitate a change in the ownership of the War portfolio.

If Bane really is meant to be the Realms' deity of Tyranny and War that probably means that something has happened to Tempus, which could take a variety of directions. Everything from Tempus fighting Garagos (again) and losing the portfolio of evil warriors (or something like that), which Bane may have taken at a later date. Or maybe Tempus fights Bane directly and loses. Either way, there could be a shake up in the war category.

Within the setting, his popularity depends on whom you ask. I doubt he's a Greater Power for nothing.

What, you wouldn't want one or two by your side in a battle? Well... come to think of it, we have seen our share of Tempurans (as PCs) whose "pep talk" ("Come on boys, we can take 'em -- a hundred orcs are NOTHING when Tempus favors us!" or "One more room -- just *one* -- and I shall heal us with the Wargod's blessing!") or their ability to incite berserk rage in allies (in AD&D) have resulted in several TPKs! :D So yes, I truly love playing a cleric of Tempus. And I also agree with Rino -- Tempus is definitely one of the most popular deities in Faerûn.
