| Optimystik03-13-07, 09:28 PM | I'm sure this has been asked at one point, but Oghma's domains are listed as Charm, Knowledge, Luck, Travel... and Trickery? To see why I'm so confused about this, here's an excerpt from his dogma: ...Curb and deny falsehoods, rumor, and deceitful tales whenever you encounter them. Write or copy lore of great value at least once a year and give it away. Sponsor and teach bards, scribes, and record keepers. Spread truth and knowledge so that all folk know more. Never deliver a message falsely or incompletely. So, he loves telling the truth so much that... he helps you lie? Eh? :thinks: Someone please explain the rationale here... |

I'm a fan of Oghma, and have read all sorts of lore on him, but can't quite figure this one out. Some ideas: It could be related to the bards and storytellers of which Oghma is patron. Trickery is a big thing there. Bluff and Disguise skills and Disguise Self could link to acting and entertainment. There could also be an aspect of knowing all about deceit so that the clerics can curb it. Or a whole "what is truth?" philosophy exists in the priesthood. Oghma's Chaotic and Evil clerics (he's allows them too, including CE) might misuse this to inflict their own version of "truth" on the world. Or it's a relic of an older aspect of Oghma in the Realms, and in Celtic myth (I don't know so much here). Mayhaps the Binder captured his followers with illusions and trickery. |

To be honest I see his faith as one of the largest employers of divine seekers, not just to get lore into their libraries, but also to get it back. Then you add in the whole dangerous knowledge thing with some friendly misdirection to keep dire events from occurring and I think Trickery makes perfect sense for him. |
| Khaelieth03-14-07, 01:22 PM | I've also come across this, and I was just as perplexed. I agree to a certain extent with everything above, but I think he'd be better without the domain, give him e.g. Rune. |

For a while I thought that was it, until I realized it makes no sense - given that logic, Lathander should have Undeath and Torm should have Evil. I would put it down to the need to occassionally engage in the random bit of larceny and perfidy to get your hands on that really rare tome sitting in that noble's trophy case collecting dust, unread in 4 generations... I like that explanation, especially since it justifies his acceptance of evil clergy; they would consider any action worth commiting to get their hands on some sort of knowledge. Best explanation so far, and yet... I've also come across this, and I was just as perplexed. I agree to a certain extent with everything above, but I think he'd be better without the domain, give him e.g. Rune. Seconded. ;) |
