In the real world the CN alignment and war approach of Tempus would be the most realistic: random, unpredictable, neutral and occurring at all levels of society, be they good or evil.

But for all the appropriateness of the Tempus approach to war in the FR I still think that the extremes of militarism and tyranny (Hextor) and righteous warfare and defence (Heironeous) are more fitting for a high fantasy setting like FR.
We all know that everything is being overhauled in the divine realm so I am for a more Heinroneous like portrayal of Torm as we already know that Bane is being outfitted with such a portfolio and dimension. Torm could be an excellent counter to this type of Bane and Tempus need not be in the picture at all.

Tempus is philosophically very convincing but his neutrality is strangely out of place in the FR.

What's your take?

I think they view warfare differently on Faerun than you seem to think they do... or is this just another attempt to build up hype for Torm and make sure he's in 4e? ;)

What's your take?My friend, I think it's just the opposite.

In real world, I'd make "War" as a Chaotic Evil "deity". Chaos in the same points you indicate, and evil because, in a general ethical point of view, it's not worth to lose so much in a war for what you win. Destruction, killings, nightmares... war is evil as portrayed by many ancient religions: Ares is presented as Chaotic Evil in Deities and Demigods... of course, there are more points of view, but this is one with I agree very much.

At the other side, in a fantasy setting, war is not evil, is neutral, because good and evil are personified by other entities, deities, and outsiders. So, War has to be balanced with these; in fantasy, a war may lead good to victory, so it's not inherently evil.

Going along with that thought, I always went under the impression that war did not discriminate in who got screwed by it by whether they were good, evil, or neutral, and so was neutral itself... hence, Tempus.

Warfare, like pretty much every other portfolio, is unaligned, and a deity's alignment gives some 'flavor' to how that portfolio is viewed by at least a bulk of the populace.

To muddy things more, being as the Faerunian pantheon was probably originally supposed to have been even more overlapping and fluid than presented in text over the years, I'd view Tempus as... Well, "The CN deity of war, combat, etc." Garagos is the "CE deity of slaughter, marauders, etc." The Red Knight is the "LN deity of war, planning, strategy, battlefields, etc."

I really love populated, intimately connected (bordering on redundant, to some) pantheons. It's probably the novice Classicist in me.
